Really don't like dogs being in virtually every cafe now

Wishididntseemsogrumpy · 13/03/2026 16:47

I know another one, and yes this is quite trivial really.

Last week we went to a gorgeous new cafe, sat down, and within a minute I realised a large dog had appeared and was licking dds outstretched hand (she was delighted of course) then we had to get up and go and wash before eating, only to see the dog licking her hands again. Argh. Then it turned around and was wagging it's tail into me (I'm unfortunately allergic to fur and would rather not have to have fur on my clothes) - we werent even that close to the other table. It's just so annoying and I know I can ask it's owners to keep it away from us but seems a bit cruel to the dog and I jolly well shouldn't have to, they should be keeping an eye themselves without me having to have an awkward chat. Manners are meant to make everyone feel comfortable and not force people into seeming unreasonable because they don't want to get involved with the animal.

Then this afternoon, different cafe, on my own this time and got the fright of my life when all of a sudden a dog snarled and snapped at a child a few tables away, who of course screamed and was very distressed, someone could have had a heart attack!

I am going to have to be more mindful of places which don't have dogs in future I think.

And I imagine I am probably going to be told I am being unreasonable. I just want a coffee in peace without slobbering or snarling dogs

This is good news for me - really keen to holiday in Cornwall, but after a dog-infested holiday in the Lakes District I vowed never again to spend my money in dog-obsessed holiday areas. Once CCC bring this law in, I'm there.

Cornwall is doing no such thing. They have recently discussed the existing seasonal bans on beaches and decided to keep them the same.

How do you think they would ban visiting dogs? What power do you think CCC has to ban hotels and B&Bs from allowing dogs? No such laws exist.

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 19/03/2026 13:03

Can you imagine Cornwall banning holiday makers that want to bring a dog 🤣

They could kiss goodbye to tourism and 90% of the local economy.

Visited my favourite dog friendly cafe yesterday. They now do pupkin spiced latte.

That is impossible anyway, and not going to happen.

How pointless

QuickCoralMoose · 19/03/2026 14:44

I absolutely love dogs. I have two and I prefer dogs to humans honestly, but even I'm on the side of dogs shouldn't be everywhere. There's a garden center that I go to often that has a designated dog side of the cafe and that seems to work quite well. It's also partially down to the owner - a dog needs to be well behaved to be taken somewhere busy.

Dragonflytamer · 19/03/2026 15:38

Until people start walking out when they see places are dog friendly this shit is going to continue.

I do. And I tell them why.

When I win the lottery, I am going to buy up cafe and restaurant spots up and down the country and make them dog-free.

But its a bit like screens showing sports in pubs. It makes more money

Does it though?! I know plenty of people who avoid dog-present cafes now. Not that there are loads to choose from, sadly. Anyway, I agree with PPs who say this will die out soon - covid dogs will die off and won't get replaced, and cafes will soon realise that it's not worth the risks of bites either.

Of course it does! Do you honestly think the likes of John Lewis and the plethora of businesses think “oh that will be nice, let’s include dogs” no…they do it because research tells them it drives up revenue.

Only in the short term. If only 20% of cafe are dog friendly they have a competitive advantage of attracting dog owners. Once 80% are dog friendly the ones which aren't have a competitive advantage by attracting non-dog owners, People with dogs don't inherently spend more money and being dog friendly should lead to higher cleaning bills (although most dog friendly places seem pretty dirty which is why many of us don't like them).

Interestingly, I caught a discussion on the Radio this morning, regarding the growing problem with dogs in this country ever since the pandemic when the world and his wife went out and got a dog. Now life is back to normal these owners are finding the responsibility too onerous and rehoming has increased by over 35% in the last 5 years. Also, due to inexperienced owners and lack of training there is a huge increase in separation anxiety and dogs not being properly socialised (as a dog, not a human - owners not having control of their animal). And obviously, dog bites to humans. Consequently there is growing tension between dog owners and the public. Fancy.

Dog owners are part of 'the public'.

I think you should only be able to have a dog if you have your own space for it to shit. No dog toileting in public areas, shared spaces etc. that would solve the issue of it being on pavements and parks etc

Absolutely - I often comment similar on such threads. Unless you have an appropriate sized house and garden, you shouldn’t have a dog. It’s anti social otherwise.

I don't get this. As long as you're picking up after your dog, you're fine. Those who get hung up on "shit particles" being left on the floor or whatever you think is antisocial about letting your dog toilet outside, where do you think foxes, birds, badgers, hedgehogs, and other wildlife toilet? No one is de-worming those animals or training them to toilet in private spaces.

Not picking up after your dog is anti-social. Training it to relieve itself on a walk is not.

If this is something that worries you, I'd suggest you stop licking the pavements.

Dog owners that I know claim that they cannot train their animals to urinate and defecate in a particular place. Though I notice that they can haul their animals away from my hedging and driveway if I'm working in the front garden.

How is this at all relevant? Poor parenting on some peoples parts is no reason to allow animals everywhere.

Agree. Classic logical fallacy from @YeOldeGreyhound
