Really don't like dogs being in virtually every cafe now

1000 replies

Wishididntseemsogrumpy · 13/03/2026 16:47

I know another one, and yes this is quite trivial really.

Last week we went to a gorgeous new cafe, sat down, and within a minute I realised a large dog had appeared and was licking dds outstretched hand (she was delighted of course) then we had to get up and go and wash before eating, only to see the dog licking her hands again. Argh. Then it turned around and was wagging it's tail into me (I'm unfortunately allergic to fur and would rather not have to have fur on my clothes) - we werent even that close to the other table. It's just so annoying and I know I can ask it's owners to keep it away from us but seems a bit cruel to the dog and I jolly well shouldn't have to, they should be keeping an eye themselves without me having to have an awkward chat. Manners are meant to make everyone feel comfortable and not force people into seeming unreasonable because they don't want to get involved with the animal.

Then this afternoon, different cafe, on my own this time and got the fright of my life when all of a sudden a dog snarled and snapped at a child a few tables away, who of course screamed and was very distressed, someone could have had a heart attack!

I am going to have to be more mindful of places which don't have dogs in future I think.

And I imagine I am probably going to be told I am being unreasonable. I just want a coffee in peace without slobbering or snarling dogs

Not a cafe but we went out for Sunday lunch yesterday for Mother’s Day to a family pub. At one point there were more dogs in there than children… there was one quite small spaniel looking dog and a few tables away from it was a Great Dane and they kept barking at each other… at one point I had to just get up and go outside, it did my head in.

JuliettaCaeser · 17/03/2026 06:20

We walked out of one city centre brunch place (so not a country pub) because there were so many dogs barking at each other 🙄. Why would a non dog owner pay to sit somewhere like that? I don’t dislike dogs am indifferent but resent them encroaching on us like that.

Harhar · 17/03/2026 06:37

So sad there’s no way of checking if a place allows dogs before you turn up, isn’t it? If only someone would invent a device where you could call ahead. Could save all the angst of accidentally seeing a dog.

WhatNoRaisins · 17/03/2026 07:03

That's where I'm at. I've tried to keep on eating at places I like but have found that I don't enjoy eating meals in rooms with dogs barking so I've stopped.

Yes I can call ahead to see if a place is dog friendly but it's not that long ago that you didn't need to do so. It was assumed that it would be guide dog only, it would not occur to you that the room would have multiple dogs barking at each other. No one wants more tedious admin jobs in their life.

JuliettaCaeser · 17/03/2026 07:05

I’m not precious about it if they’re unobtrusive that’s ok. But this place is gorgeous with a high ceiling so with the acoustics with all the barking it was actually unpleasant. We left before ordering. Why would I pay £100 to sit in Battersea dogs home?

JuliettaCaeser · 17/03/2026 07:07

I think it used to be rare so not many dogs which worked ok but now everyone seems to do it they all bark at each other! Think it will go full circle back to banning again

Talkingtomyhouseplants · 17/03/2026 07:10

One of my neighbours has let their dog out to BARK BARK BARK at 6:30 this morning. I will just never understand dog people at all, so selfish.

Harhar · 17/03/2026 07:11

So it’s accepted that dog free places are available and there’s a quick way to check whether a place allows dogs but you just don’t feel you should have to check?

A know it’s another boring admin job but at the same time as starting the petition that will vastly improve your lives someone could also start a website which lists all dog free places. It will surely take up less time than is spent on here posting that things aren’t to your exact taste.

WhatNoRaisins · 17/03/2026 07:18

Because it's work that wasn't necessary in the days when you didn't have to worry about this crap. I'm not going to rejoice at having to do something extra for the sake of something I remember not even being an issue in my lifetime.

Do you think it’s acceptable that people should just have to put up with dogs barking at each other, rather than the dog owner being responsible and taking them outside? (And, yes, before you ask I think parents should do the same with disruptive kids) That’s a different issue to whether dogs should be allowed.

I’d like it to be easier to find places that aren’t dog-friendly - I’m not always in the mood to face poor dog / owner behaviour - but sadly when you Google “dog free” it always comes back with dog-friendly. I can’t use the phone due to disability and places don’t always have email.

Even if the dogs aren’t well behaved?

@Justareceptionist you are spot on with this:

What I've noticed in recent years though is that everyone is expected to love dogs, and if you don't, you're a terrible person.
Very often, it goes further than that. You're not just expected to love dogs, you're expected to show love to every dog you meet. Fawn over it, stroke it, ask its name, tell the owner how gorgeous it is. People expect it, and I genuinely believe that's why lots of people get them.”

This is precisely why my patience is non-existent now. I can remember the odd occasion when a dog jumped up at me or walked towards me in a public place in the past and once the owner realised, their reaction would be abject horror and the dog would be told off. Some owners are still like that and appreciate not everybody likes dogs or just simply at that moment in time doesn’t want to interact with them.
However, I find more owners are now actively foisting their dog on people or, as you were also describing in that post, waiting around, presenting their dog to the world and expecting everyone else to fawn over it.

@BunnyFrock you were also spot on:

What I hate is owners who get pissed off with you if you ask them to get their dog away from you. Shouldn't have to ask. Owners who think it's ok to walk untrained dogs off lead. I don't want strange untrained dogs running towards me.”

I got called a miserable bitch a few months ago for not interacting with a dog that had jumped up on my back when I was sat on a bench seat in a pub. I love dogs, had one until a few years ago but my lifestyle doesn't enable me to have one now. The one time he jumped up at someone, which was completely out of character for him, it never would have entered my mind to insult the person. I was mortified and apologised profusely.

WhatNoRaisins · 17/03/2026 07:31

I have much more respect for dog owners that understand the animal nature of their dogs and make sensible decisions about how they will cope and behave in different environments. I'm not a fan of people that take dog friendly or dogs allowed to mean it's ok for their dogs to disturb others with all their barking or compare them to children.

Dogs can’t fly on planes and having been looking recently for dog friendly cottages in the uk it’s easy to look for either- every cottage has a paw print crossed out if not dog friendly or a paw print if friendly. Not hard.

You really are looking for issues.

keepswimming38 · 17/03/2026 07:36

I was in a cafe recently where two dogs had a big fight. People were scared and the owners took too long to remove themselves. It was pretty awful and I haven’t been back since.

Harhar · 17/03/2026 07:37

If a dogs bark consistently at each other they should be separated. Every human should try and minimise their impact on others, including removing their unruly dogs, children and partners from restaurants when needed.

The exaggerated anecdotes on here weaken any real points people might have.

Tretweet · 17/03/2026 07:38

I do generally like dogs - my DD thinks everything is better if there are dogs. But I am wary of people who claim dogs can’t possibly cause any disturbance. We don’t eat out very much due to allergies but things I have witnessed from dogs over my DDs life.

  1. Dog off lead on a busy beach in Cornwall with loads of families (before the summer holiday dogs ban on that beach) one dog cocked its leg on a windbreak whilst the owners looked on.

  2. Different dog off lead on the same beach invaded our picnic whilst the owners looked on being ineffective and saying how cute.

  3. Dog fully off lead and run away from owner and growling at anyone who approached in Covid, this included serious dog people who were trying to grab its collar

  4. Dog off lead with elderly woman who clearly couldn’t control it if she needed to who again was growling so much had to pick up my four year old as it was as big as her

  5. Dog completely out of control snapping at our ankles again including children in Norfolk, run ahead from owners and it was so aggressive my Father in Law had to kick it. Totally unfair on him (very unviolent man) and the dog should not have been put in that situation ever.

  6. Local naice garden centre, dog poos on the carpeted floor - owner sees and walks off.

  7. Small dog being dragged round John Lewis in Cambridge on massively busy Saturday. Poor dog looked totally overwhelmed to me.

  8. So many barking matches from different dogs in public I’ve lost count

As I say - overall pro dogs - but I have never met as many unreasonable parents as I have dog owners. Also toddlers very unlikely to be able to bite someone and cause any damage.

JuliettaCaeser · 17/03/2026 07:39

Why would I exaggerate? I don’t mind dogs but don’t want to be in an environment where they are all barking at each other! This all dogs welcome approach isn’t working

That would certainly be quick, because there are so few of them. It’s what the thread is about. It’s there in the title.

JuliettaCaeser · 17/03/2026 07:42

I think reasonable non dog owners are getting pissed off with it now.

Harhar · 17/03/2026 07:42

Well if you’re all so sure it’s not working let’s stop morning and sit tight for this huge u turn that’s just round the corner.

Did you miss the huge list posted? Or did it not suit your narrative?

That’s not true at all - maybe on some specific website you are looking at but on air bnb etc you often have to open the listing and scroll to find out if it is pet friendly or not. And that’s not the point - there should be a filter like there is for pet friendly. Staying in accommodation that has hosted people’s animals is vile and a huge risk for people with allergies. As a side note, why does the flipping dog even need to go on holiday?
