Really don't like dogs being in virtually every cafe now

I know another one, and yes this is quite trivial really.

Last week we went to a gorgeous new cafe, sat down, and within a minute I realised a large dog had appeared and was licking dds outstretched hand (she was delighted of course) then we had to get up and go and wash before eating, only to see the dog licking her hands again. Argh. Then it turned around and was wagging it's tail into me (I'm unfortunately allergic to fur and would rather not have to have fur on my clothes) - we werent even that close to the other table. It's just so annoying and I know I can ask it's owners to keep it away from us but seems a bit cruel to the dog and I jolly well shouldn't have to, they should be keeping an eye themselves without me having to have an awkward chat. Manners are meant to make everyone feel comfortable and not force people into seeming unreasonable because they don't want to get involved with the animal.

Then this afternoon, different cafe, on my own this time and got the fright of my life when all of a sudden a dog snarled and snapped at a child a few tables away, who of course screamed and was very distressed, someone could have had a heart attack!

I am going to have to be more mindful of places which don't have dogs in future I think.

And I imagine I am probably going to be told I am being unreasonable. I just want a coffee in peace without slobbering or snarling dogs

everyone would be perfectly happy if owners kept their dogs in their own homes. Whether you’re scared pf dogs, allergic or just plain hate them you should be allowed to go about your life without being impeded by someone else’s lifestyle choice.

Does that go for all lifestyle
choices that piss off people?

We are awaiting the Dogolypse!

🤣

Moltencheese · 13/03/2026 20:37

I am a vet
i own a dog
I completely agree with you.
I met up with a friend and had an unpleasant interaction with a dog owner who sat right next to us and didn’t believe her daughter was allergic to dogs (national trust, indoors, plenty of seating outdoors)
i have had owners wanting Prozac for their dogs as they get anxious in the pubs and cafes that they are determined to take them to.
I have seen dogs getting stepped on in crowds at Christmas light switch ons and firework displays…

There are places for humans and places for dogs, sometimes just leave them at home!?

and dogs in cafes are new to you?

🤔

The increased number and instances of disturbance are new.

What do you class as an "instance of disturbance", because just seeing a dog can be classed as that on here.

WhatNoRaisins · 13/03/2026 20:41

This is what I don't get, people claim to love dogs yet want their dogs to live human lifestyles with indoor eating and shopping. If dogs are so great then embrace the doggy lifestyle instead. No dog needs to go to a cafe or John Lewis, that's a human want.

This is why I see these dogs as relationship substitutes rather than pets.

true! DC2 does.

Obviously you not been on here long, there's at least 1 post a week on the subject.

I hate how we have to fawn over them all of the time. Almost like babies. A dog gives you attention and the owner immediately looks at you as if to say, “isn’t he cute?”. No. I don’t want to engage

Why do you think dogs should just live in a cold garden on scraps, and never go out.

My dog went to cafes. She loved them and she was well behaved. What is the problem?

And please do not go down the route you are gong down about relationships.
It gets hurtful and nasty.

I LOVE dogs, and I have never seen this. Ever. I am actually kind of disappointed.

It’s a wonder my children survived, being brought up in a house with a dog. We do hoover every day so stray fur is at a minimum, but honestly? I didn’t wash their hands every time they cuddled their dog.

Agree OP, so many places ruined now with dogs everywhere. Wetherspoons might be worth a visit though, never been before but if it's dog-free then that's great.

WhatNoRaisins · 13/03/2026 20:46

Because all the I prefer dogs to humans stuff is a sign of a maladaptive coping strategy to relationships.

Frequency · 13/03/2026 20:46

My dog loves going to cafes because he knows that all the children who ask if they can pet him will be told he doesn't like that, but they can feed him a treat instead if they want to.

Aw, does he have some chi in him?

SusanChurchouse · 13/03/2026 20:50

I’d never say to their face, but my heart sinks a bit when a friend brings her dog to our cafe meet ups. Just because the entire time she’s distracted by keeping the dog under control, and I get second hand anxiety about the dog’s behaviour as it’s not the kind of placid dog that just sits quietly under a table. I love the dog and love going for walks with her (or any dog really) but it puts me on edge in a cafe.

I saw a small dog almost get trampled underfoot on a busy Saturday afternoon on Princes St in Edinburgh (main shopping street). Absolutely idiotic place to take a dog.

ShakyBake · 13/03/2026 20:50

I'm a dog lover too but not keen on them in cafes.
I was amazed to see Costa had multiple digs inside my local one recently

I went with my mum and her greyhound to a newly opened cafe today. It has a dog friendly bit which is basically an enclosed outside area.
It was packed, but we found a table. Dog led on his mat on the floor and was fine. People on the table next to us kept making comments to each other that they wanted us to hear in a passive aggressive way. Things like the dog stunk. He did not. He was slobbering over their food. He was on the floor and he does not slobber. Oh and how awful it was that he was occasionally having the audacity to look at them.
By the way, we were sat in the dogs welcome bit and he was also the only dog there.

The bacon sandwiches and oat milk lattes we had were gorgeous though. Would go again.

Dogs do smell.

Did you die though? No.
I have sat next to far too many human males who missed the memo on basic ass and ball hygiene.
