Really don't like dogs being in virtually every cafe now

Wishididntseemsogrumpy · 13/03/2026 16:47

I know another one, and yes this is quite trivial really.

Last week we went to a gorgeous new cafe, sat down, and within a minute I realised a large dog had appeared and was licking dds outstretched hand (she was delighted of course) then we had to get up and go and wash before eating, only to see the dog licking her hands again. Argh. Then it turned around and was wagging it's tail into me (I'm unfortunately allergic to fur and would rather not have to have fur on my clothes) - we werent even that close to the other table. It's just so annoying and I know I can ask it's owners to keep it away from us but seems a bit cruel to the dog and I jolly well shouldn't have to, they should be keeping an eye themselves without me having to have an awkward chat. Manners are meant to make everyone feel comfortable and not force people into seeming unreasonable because they don't want to get involved with the animal.

Then this afternoon, different cafe, on my own this time and got the fright of my life when all of a sudden a dog snarled and snapped at a child a few tables away, who of course screamed and was very distressed, someone could have had a heart attack!

I am going to have to be more mindful of places which don't have dogs in future I think.

And I imagine I am probably going to be told I am being unreasonable. I just want a coffee in peace without slobbering or snarling dogs

I don't give myself that sort of credit.

There is no point complaining. Market forces means that the owners who can’t leave their homes without their dogs are a group that businesses want to cater for.

You only have to read posts by people who say they prefer dogs to humans, children are dirtier than dogs, they would save their dog before a child etc to realise that some people now elevate dogs above human beings.

The pandemic played a part in making some people even more antisocial and socially inept. They did not train their dogs but acquired them for company. And now they cannot leave them at home. Because the poor dog cannot cope alone, and the people cannot cope going anywhere without their canine friends.

Resistance is futile OP. But bad dog owners are very annoying. They put their dogs over decent behaviour. And they get a bad name for the many good owners too.

Very well said

Frequency · 13/03/2026 21:05

He is 100% Chi. I have zero clues why/how he is so big. The rest of his litter and mum and dad are regular Chi-sized. This is mum and dad.

Cafe near us has recently changed its policy on accepting dogs. They are no longer allowed.

The vitriol on social media is off the scale. People are absolutely raging 🤯 they have not given a reason for this policy change but I applaud them, to be honest.

My local Costa seems to attract parents who think the tables that people dine on is an appropriate place to change a nappy.

Well, that's disgusting and totally inappropriate too. Doesn't mean it's ok for dogs to be there though. Let's be honest, it's usually the entitled owners who give responsible dog owners a bad name and the entitled owners who don't see why they should have to control their dog in any way and scarper if the dog soils the floor.

I have never seen a dog shit in a cafe. Sorry if that does not fit your narrative.

Mumteedum · 13/03/2026 21:19

Too many dogs in cafes and pubs. Child was bitten here at local Costa. Having large dogs inside a stressful environment is not a good idea.

I love dogs but I was a bit unimpressed on a recent pub trip. I had two dogs begging throughout my meal. I never allowed my own dog to beg when I had one. They were very close to our table and table height. Really annoying.

BlackRowan · 13/03/2026 21:21

I’m with you. And they bark in cafes, absolutely hate this

NeonSuit · 13/03/2026 21:22

TSW12 · 13/03/2026 18:25

I have two dogs who I love to bits but I would never take them inside a cafe or any shop tbh. It has to be seriously unhygienic.

Thank you. Upon a time most dog owners were like you. You are now the minority it seems.

You saw fleas land in your tea?
I call bullshit.

It was an enclosed carpeted tearoom the size of a small living room with a huge shaggy dog doing full shake down every 3 minutes while everyone is eating and drinking. Anything on its coat will have landed in our food no question.

No, you see dog and think stink, tics, fleas, and disease.
Get a grip.
Most dogs have treatments against all of those things.

BeMintBiscuit · 13/03/2026 21:26

I do agree. I love dogs and have two of my own. However, I think it's getting excessive. We take ours out if it's a walk and maybe a take away coffee, but not inside. It's just too much. When we go out shopping or for lunch, our dogs would stay at home for a couple of hours. There's so many out and about that it's just chaos.

I have never seen a pet dog lunge at an assistance dog.

However, I have seen someone with 3 assistance dogs, 2 of which were fighting each other.

It sounds like what you have seen is someone that claims ti have an assistance dog, but actually just likes taking their pet everywhere. I highly doubt you have seen an Assistance Dog UK accredited organisation trained dog lunging at anyone, e.g. Guide Dogs, Hearing Dogs, Dogs for the Disabled Disabled.

Sadly attacks on trained assistance dogs are a common occurrence which can have devastating consequences.

Pieceofpurplesky · 13/03/2026 21:28

I agree OP. My local cinema even has a dog friendly showing. Why the fuck would you take your dog to the cinema?

Can we please stop comparing dogs to children? Children are vital for society. They’ll grow up and their taxes will pay for the country’s pension and healthcare. Dogs may bring joy to their owners but they’re totally unnecessary for society to survive, and the vast majority of the public couldn’t care less if your dog lived or died, and they are a huge waste of the world’s resources.

Children on the other hand are utterly vital to the future of this country. Many countries have recognised this have banned anti-child policies (adult only holidays, restaurants etc). We should be tolerant to children. Dogs deserve zero tolerance whatsoever.

The owners comparing dogs to kids really have lost the plot. Children are humans and dogs are pets. I mean, I can’t believe it needs saying!

No, we are just comparing shitty behaviour. From dogs and kids.

JohnTheRevelator · 13/03/2026 21:39

I keep seeing posts/threads on Mumsnet with people complaining about frequently seeing dogs in cafes and coffee shops. I'm a bit mystified as I think I've seen a dog in a cafe or coffee shop twice in the last 5 years. And one one of them was a tiny chihuahua concealed in the woman's large handbag. It was only because I saw her popping bits of panini in her bag that I realised she had a dog in there. Where I live,it's certainly not a common occurrence to see dogs in cafes or coffee shops.

LAX12 · 13/03/2026 21:40

Aside from the majority of us disliking them in cafes, how much is the dog even enjoying that experience?! I really think it’s quite selfish to treat these animals like accessories… I just learnt what a ‘pup cup’ was… need I say more?

RobinInTheCrabApple · 13/03/2026 21:41

the vast majority of the public couldn’t care less if your dog lived or died

Every year the public donates around £140 million to the Dog's Trust, about £65 million to Battersea and £170 million is donated to the RSPCA and SPCA.

Lots of people really do care about dogs (and other animals) thankfully.

Most dog owners know what their dogs do and do not like.
My mum's dog loves cafes. He gets fuss, treats, and gets to spend time with his humans.
Please don't try and speak for dogs you don't know.

100% agree. I had the misfortune of trying a new cafe and then a dog and it's owner trundled in to get a takeout coffee. They waited right next to my table. Food came out and I told the waitress that I didn't want to eat my food next to a dog. I was told they could wrap it up for me and take it out. She said they were a dog friendly cafe but I said I saw no sign to advise. She said it was online.

Dog and owner then got the coffee and left quickly. Spoilt my lunch, won't go back there and will proceed with caution for future cafes. They decided that my £20 lunch was less important than allowing a dog in. They now have one less customer.

So you went to a new café, assumed it wasn’t dog-friendly (mistake #1), then acted like your £20 lunch was more important than a regular customer stopping by with their dog or the café’s many dog-owning customers (mistake #2). The dog and owner even left quickly. No sign doesn’t mean a place isn’t dog-friendly. Sometimes the simplest solution is to check beforehand by asking. Problem solved.
