Really don't like dogs being in virtually every cafe now

Wishididntseemsogrumpy · 13/03/2026 16:47

I know another one, and yes this is quite trivial really.

Last week we went to a gorgeous new cafe, sat down, and within a minute I realised a large dog had appeared and was licking dds outstretched hand (she was delighted of course) then we had to get up and go and wash before eating, only to see the dog licking her hands again. Argh. Then it turned around and was wagging it's tail into me (I'm unfortunately allergic to fur and would rather not have to have fur on my clothes) - we werent even that close to the other table. It's just so annoying and I know I can ask it's owners to keep it away from us but seems a bit cruel to the dog and I jolly well shouldn't have to, they should be keeping an eye themselves without me having to have an awkward chat. Manners are meant to make everyone feel comfortable and not force people into seeming unreasonable because they don't want to get involved with the animal.

Then this afternoon, different cafe, on my own this time and got the fright of my life when all of a sudden a dog snarled and snapped at a child a few tables away, who of course screamed and was very distressed, someone could have had a heart attack!

I am going to have to be more mindful of places which don't have dogs in future I think.

And I imagine I am probably going to be told I am being unreasonable. I just want a coffee in peace without slobbering or snarling dogs

Full disclosure: I'm a dog owner, no children and probably conform to the 'prefer dogs to children' rhetoric.
I also don't want barky, snarly dogs in indoor confined spaces.
However in my experience this is actually extremely rare. And certainly rarer than poorly behaved children in pubs and restaurants. The vast majority of dogs I encounter on pubs/cafes/restaurants are well behaved and quiet.
The problem is irresponsible or entitled owners (of both the dogs and the children) not the dogs themselves. You either train your dog (or child...yes I will labour this point) to behave in public or you don't take them to such places.

Edited

Yes! If your dog or kid can't behave, then leave them at home. With a sitter if need be.

My DH stood in dog poo at the inside entrance to a coffee shop.

🤢
Ugh I almost throw the shoes away when that happens it's gross.

Shame on the cafe! If they allow dogs they should ensure any steps, paths entrances or ramps are dog poop free.

and dogs in cafes are new to you?

🤔

Shows that they don't go out much 😆

It's the associated dog sh*t on footpath to and from the dog-friendly establishments that does my head in. We walk it into our homes because owners can't be arsed. It disgusts me.

I had a dog, and I hate that too.
Having a dog does not mean we love shit on our shoes.

I'm with you, it's gross.

I am starting to see more dogs in Kew Gardens now, which is a shame as it used to be assistance dogs only.

One today who definitely did not look like an assistance dog, given that it didn't have any harness with signage and also the woman was pushing its dog pram!

The Kew Gardens website still says assistance dogs only, so if you see a non-assistance dog it might be worth mentioning it to staff and they can deal with it (or not)

Most dogs sit quietly and don’t bother anyone.

What about the people who notice your dog and then say their throat is closing up, and they make a big issue about being "deathly allergic", when they literally only just noticed the dog that has been next to them for 2 hours already.
Because I have seen that on here.

Having been on many a dog hating thread on here, a lot of people hide behind allergies to just say they hate dogs and hate seeing them out.

Even if some people use it as an excuse, maybe because they don't want to admit they have a fear of dogs or various other reasons, many others have genuine, life-altering allergies. Why should the burden of proof be on the person with a medical vulnerability rather than the person bringing an animal into a food establishment?
Also, the allergies are often cumulative, you might feel okay for the first twenty minutes or so, but as you sit in a confined space, the histamine response builds up until your system hits a breaking point. Suggesting people are faking it because they didn't have an instant reaction is exactly the kind of dismissal that makes these situations so frustrating for people with health issues.

MaidOfSteel · 13/03/2026 20:14

I don’t care how much people love their dogs. They should not be forcing them on others.

And I don’t care how many times the owner says ‘aw, but he just wants to be friendly’ while I’m sat there obviously effing terrified!

Mine always did that. Same for my mum's dog too.
Both sat on their mats and chilled.
MN seems to think dogs impose themselves on people, but we found it the other way around. People came up to our dogs and asked to say hello.

The issue is that people don’t do anything about the ones that don’t. I don’t know whether the staff are scared of the reaction if they ask the owner to leave or if they - like the owner - just can’t be arsed.

Can “assistance dogs” be kicked out if they’re not well behaved anyway? (Yes, I know the genuine ones are fine, but like someone said upthread, I have seen ones that definitely haven’t been properly trained and question whether they’re actually assistance dogs)

Oooof some perfumes give me a migraine. Blinding headache and nausea. And some cleaning products.

Same here. Cleaning products with a synthetic lemon scent seem particularly bad, and in perfumes, Opium and Estee Lauder Youth Dew will do it.

I get far fewer migraines now I'm post-menopause, which is nice.

I have phobias and they are up to me to manage.
There are very VERY vocal posters on here who hide behind supposed allergies or phobias but they actually just really hate dogs. They hate people owning them in their own homes.

Firtreefiona · 13/03/2026 20:19

What ever happened to just leaving your dog at home or in the car? My great aunt always did this and her dog was extremely contented indeed. We’d go for a big long country walk then went to the pub while the dog napped in the car, perfectly happy.

FourChimneys · 13/03/2026 20:19

Last week I was at a garden centre which has various smaller shops such as clothing and kitchenware and also a cafe. There is a large sign outside stating no dogs except guide dogs and it also makes it very clear on the website.

A couple of women arrived with a large dog and made a huge fuss as they had each driven quite a distance to meet there. They were so rude to the member of staff who just kept politely repeating that it was company policy. They were also annoyed that she couldn't suggest anywhere nearby they could wander round, as if it was her fault.

I meet friends there as the cafe is blissfully dog free.

There is one cafe in my town which is dog free and it is always busy.

I don't have a car. If you are on holiday, you can't leave the dog in the accommodation.
I also liked to bring my dog to places, and she enjoyed it too.

everyone would be perfectly happy if owners kept their dogs in their own homes. Whether you’re scared pf dogs, allergic or just plain hate them you should be allowed to go about your life without being impeded by someone else’s lifestyle choice.

Can you stay at home so people like me can go out?

Dog owners round my way must be very diligent, I couldn't tell you the last time I saw dog shit on the pavement in my town.

I think there are more households with dogs than without in my road, and we're on the edge of open countryside, so loads of people walk dogs up here en route to the woods and fields. It's surprising that it's so rare.

Its down to the owners. Their cafe ther choice and most would close without dog owners. I can’t bare children in cafes, sooo noisy, messy and unhygienic but have to suck it up.

It’s only a matter of time. There will be an accident if some sort, injured child or infection/bacteria and then there will be a blanket ban on dogs.

FourChimneys · 13/03/2026 20:29

Primrose86 I saw a dog lift its leg and pee on some maxidresses in a shop. The owner was oblivious and the shop assistant just shrugged when I told them.

No pavement turds here.
But there is an enclosed bit in my local park which attracts dog owner meeting type things. The owners all stand around chatting and fail to notice their pooch curling one out.
It is so annoying, because I go there with mum's dog, and we are trying to dodge all the poo.

🤣How???

Far far more likely to be an accident from a wondering child. How on earth do you get infections from dogs?
