I will probably get flack for this but this is the second time this has happened in as many days. I get to school pick up early, parked my car noone in front and another car few metres behind. Another car comes and parks a few metres ahead. Another one comes and parks in between me and car ahead. Plenty of room to leave her car also bang in middle of both, but no she has to move her car as near to my bumper as possible. I move car back and she moves her car forward again right on top of my bumper. I beep my horn, she gets out of car asking why I did that, I said cos you've parked as near to me as possible, she says there's a load of room behind you, I said what if someone parks the same behind, then I'll move back she said (bear in mind she was leaving her car) and everyone's happy except you, i told her to sod off. And she parked over a dropped kerb. Aibu to think she could've just parked between the two cars leaving enough room both ways

There probably aren't pavements in a very rural area. I don't see why parents shouldn't drive to school, they have as much right to use the roads as anyone else.

I am a bit confused as to why the woman parking was a problem though, because you had space behind you to get out. I don't get why you were upset that she parked close ro your bumper in the first place, she wasn't blocking you.

Some people think you need miles of space in front to get out of a parallel park.

FeetupTvon · 13/03/2026 17:33

Honestly, is this all you have to worry about?
Just reverse a bit to give yourself more space.
This is a non-issue.

Growlybear83 · 13/03/2026 17:33

The way you’ve responded so rudely to some people on this thread really doesn’t show you in a good light, OP.

SleepyHollowed84 · 13/03/2026 17:30

So you allegedly

  • Had to get there early to get a spot
  • but at the same time you parked as far away from school as possible
  • left two massive gaps either side of you
  • beeped at someone

And then have asked if YABU but are challenging anyone who says YABU?

YABU.

Yes two massive gaps that someone could park in easily without having to kiss my bumper. You don't know the dynamics of this road or school for that matter. I leave early as I've said numerous times I'm about a 15 mins drive away (not all of us live in urban areas) and I like to leave before the school run starts up my road, and I park away from school so I don't have to encounter the type of prat that i did earlier if that's ok with you, anything else you would like to bash me for?

No there isn't on large stretches, funnily enough

So basically there is not enough safe space to park near the school?

I've only responded rudely to the ones who've been rude to me

I am likewise baffled. I think we need a better diagram, to scale, with both dropped kerbs marked. Otherwise I don't understand why @OneGreyBiscuit was in any way inconvenienced.

The pavement quote was about the roads some on here think that my DD should walk down so I don't have to drive, nothing to do with the school road

They weren’t. They were just pissed off as they think getting there early entitles them to get a big space.

So you could still pull out easily by reversing?
Wish I had so few problems that this would bother me!

PandaCwtch · 13/03/2026 16:12

In a place that you know is going to be busy for parking (school pick up general is), why would you choose to park in such an inconsiderate manner yourself? You've said that there was a car parked, and you've left a massive gap between them and you, rather than park up to the car already there, therefore forcing the next drivers to parallel park around you. Perhaps the other driver was making the point that you've parked inconsiderately? They shouldn't have parked on the dropped kerb, but you definitely aren't in the right with the rest of it.

This

Dery · 13/03/2026 17:48

She sounds a bit much but i find the way you parked odd as well: I live in London so would always park up close to another vehicle rather than leave dead space ahead of me the way you did. But i realise that may just be decades of London parking.

Mochudubh · 13/03/2026 17:49

Like @FancyBiscuitsLevel I don't understand why you moved back. I'd have stayed put. You had plenty space behind you which you reduced by moving back.

She maybe even thought you were moving back as a courtesy to allow her to move further.

She thought someone might block her from behind!

But she couldn't back up because there was a dropped kerb behind!

For the love of God, will somebody please make it make sense?

Downplayit · 13/03/2026 17:51

Sorry but I think you might be the entitled one here. Its obviously a busy parking road by school because of the number of cars arriving at that time. Its inconsiderate to leave a gap like you did and means others have to reverse park into a space rather than just pulling in. Sounds like she was trying to make as much space as possible for others. Most cars have such good sensors now that getting in an out of tight spaces is pretty easy.

Not a london thing, I live in an welsh mining village with rows and rows of terraces and if you routinely parked selfishly here you'd have your arse handed to you on the local facebook group.

It drives me mad when im picking ds up and people leave massive gaps between them and the next car rather than parking properly so as many people as possible can get in safely.

OneGreyBiscuit · 13/03/2026 17:38

I think I fully understand why the driver was apparently “condescending” to you.

GoldbergVariations · 13/03/2026 17:58

OneGreyBiscuit · 13/03/2026 16:33

When you're being spoke to in a condescending manner I think it was very appropriate, she was lucky to get sod

And there endeth the lesson for today, ladies and gentlemen.

EmbroideredGardener · 13/03/2026 18:03

I try and avoid this by parking next to/behind/in front of an already parked car so I can control the distance left one at least one side. It doesnt always work but its worth a go!

MyDeftDuck · 13/03/2026 18:03

Looks like she was leaving room to be able to drive off without having to manoeuvre out of the parking space when she wants to leave. Also, she is in the wrong to park across a drop kerb as that is potentially blocking and exit/entrance.

AnotherHormonalWoman · 13/03/2026 18:09

OneGreyBiscuit · 13/03/2026 16:42

Well I don't park over dropped kerbs so one out of two is ok

No it's not. Hers may have inconvenienced you and the person who may have used the dropped kerb. Yours inconvenienced everybody around. Don't do that.
