Is it normal to burp loudly in a yoga class??

Just done a yoga class with about 8 women and one man. As I was rolling up out of my spinal roll I hear this giant, very loud, very intentional burp coming from across the room! I smiled expecting everyone to laugh or look a bit shocked, and the person to say ‘oops I’m so sorry’ or ‘excuse me’ or something, but everyone just carried on as though it was totally normal..did not even acknowledge it! I’m pretty sure it was the man, which for some reason, annoyed me a bit. Just made me think, god another entitled, arrogant man. I don’t think I’d have felt that way if it had been a woman. He also breathed SO loudly. I get in yoga some people like to deep breathe but it really does not need to be so loud. I’ve done quite a lot of various different yoga classes over the years and I’ve never heard anyone burp like this. Is this normal??

People don't generally apologise for burps and farts in my yoga classes that I attend. I don't fart intentionally but sometimes to my mortification one pops out. Burping or farting intentionally is different though.

PivotPivotmakingmargaritas · 13/03/2026 10:35

Really disgusting… but I think the others were in polite shock or polite disgust… he should have said whoops sorry

KimberleyClark · 13/03/2026 10:35

Bit sexist of you to assume it was the man! My yoga teacher once farted quite loudly while demonstrating a pose. We all just carried on as though nothing had happened. I do think passing of wind is an occupational hazard of yoga.

It isn't unusual to burp (or fart) in yoga - it's a combination of the physical movements and stretching, and relaxation. So they weren't being rude.

Dashling · 13/03/2026 10:38

Some asanas do help release trapped wind.

ThankFuckTheSunIsHere · 13/03/2026 10:41

He sounds insufferable

AnnPerkins · 13/03/2026 10:41

I've never burped or heard anyone burp in our yoga classes. I assume everyone is permanently suppressing a fart, though, as I am.

There is one man who breathes very loudly. He also likes to perform headstands before the class has started, which is quite a feat considering he's wearing a bottle hat.

AnnPerkins · 13/03/2026 10:42

*bobble hat 🙄

🤣🤣I did wonder wtf a bottle hat was!

Trumping and burping is quite normal in yoga, but obviously not intentionally.

I was horrified the other week when I accidentally trumped, everyone just ignored it.
I'm more bothered about those that don't turn their phones onto silent and are getting constant notifications or calls.

Lurkingandlearning · 13/03/2026 10:59

PPS are right, yoga does release trapped wind and it isn’t always possible to control the volume when it’s expelled.

This thread has reminded me of my first class ever. As we all lowered our legs to lay flat, quite a few women released fanny farts (which are audibly distinct from bottom farts). And it’s as funny today as it was all those years ago.

I did this at my first yoga class 30 years ago. Repeatedly. Didn't attend yoga again for decades 😁. No-one tells you that it's a thing.

JustAnotherBoyMaman · 13/03/2026 11:10

If it was intentional then yeah that's annoying, but I find myself passing gas in yoga. I also know others do too because it's just natural but if someone intentionally farts/ burps I think that's a bit weird and even attention seeking.

popcornandpotatoes · 13/03/2026 11:12

No. It's always the men too, huffing puffing breathing loudly groaning. I really prefer it when they're not in the class at all.

I've been doing yoga all my adult life and have heard a small fart in a handful of yoga classes. That's about it.

I assumed it was the man cos it was coming from his direction and was also a very deep-sounding burp. As in came from someone with a deeper voice (mind you I’ve done some shockingly loud burps after a can of Fanta!) but something about it just didn’t sound like it came from either of the petite little older ladies on either side of him

I know farting can be a common side effect of yoga lol. I’ve farted before in a class (and tried to cover it with a cough!) but I didn’t think yoga had the same effect when it comes to burping. I’m just surprised he didn’t apologise or acknowledge it at all. Burping’s much less embarrassing than farting, if I’d have burped I’d have apologised

I was spinning in the gym yesterday when the woman on the next machine started burping loudly and repeatedly. No apology, no attempt to keep it quiet - she seemed to be enjoying it. Odd, but not something to make a fuss about.

Shakshuka4ever · 13/03/2026 11:40

I am a woman and when I get gas and burp comes out it can sound like it came out of strongman....

Tulipsriver · 13/03/2026 11:54

How on earth can you know it was intentional?

I've burped and farted in yoga classes before. It's mortifying but I think the accepted response is to pretend it hasn't happened. I would find someone apologising odder I think.

Catza · 13/03/2026 11:56

A bit of a perspective from a yoga teacher. Yoga is about being present in your own body, with your own practice. Maybe something to reflect on if your mind drifts to thinking about others in a class. Especially if it raises u comfortable emotions. Bring your attention back to your mat. Otherwise, you are not really doing yoga. You are exercising. Not the same thing.
I always start my class with an invitation to do whatever each person needs to do to feel comfortable in the class and that this is a space with no judgement. Someone was eating lunch during relaxation the other day. Perfectly happy about that is that's what they felt was needed and no need to apologise.

BauhausOfEliott · 13/03/2026 11:58

An acquaintance of mine teaches yoga and she’s always said that yoga can release trapped wind from both ends and the usual etiquette is to ignore it rather than make a thing of apologising.

However present in my own body I was, I'd be very put off if someone started eating lunch during a class.

outerspacepotato · 13/03/2026 12:59

Gerz, that's Planet Fitness at night territory. I'd get up and leave if somebody was munching during savasana. There's inadvertant body noises when you're really using your abs and or twisting but eating is voluntary crunching and stuff and takes people right out of their well earned meditative state.

Exactly this!
Wait till she hears about wind-relieving pose 😂

BiscoffCheesecakes · 13/03/2026 13:04

My SIL farted loudly in the stretching part of yoga. Was very funny
