To feel guilted into being vegan??? AIBU?

I saw quite a traumatic animal welfare video a few days ago, which had the purpose of trying to encourage viewers to become vegan.

I am not a huge meat lover, but love the occasional beef burger, steak or nice roast dinner. I am a bit of a dairy fiend though, so not sure how I would cope.

However the video pointed towards the awful treatment of farm animals, being separated from their babies after mere hours together, and being slaughtered themselves at a relatively young age, after a life of being exploited.

I haven’t really considered the welfare of farm animals much in my life, if I’m honest, and I feel quite bad for admitting that. Now I’m wondering if what we do to these animals is fair, and I thought posting on here might help me consider both sides to the argument.

AIBU to now feel compelled to drastically change my diet in support of animal welfare?

I think it more ethical to catch, dispatch, skin and eat a rabbit than to buy factory farmed meat or eggs. But that is kind of the point, it doesn’t really matter what anyone else thinks. If you have a problem with something don’t be part of it, if you don’t then crack on.

HoppityBun · 11/03/2026 18:27

It’s horrific. But you won’t stick to it if you do this on impulse because of guilt.

Make any changes slowly and find out about vegan nutrition and recipes.

My mum has pet rabbits
Anyone who wants to kill a wild rabbit for food is a sociopath

I honestly don’t see the difference between animals in levels of sentience and would much rather the animal lived a “proper life” and then was quickly killed, than a horrible life and then death on a conveyor belt.

dragonsandfairies · 11/03/2026 18:40

I have not RTFT so im not sure if this has been asked already
What do vegan and vegetarian people believe will happen to the fields full of animals we have at the moment?
If they're not bred for the food industry then they won't be scattered around the countryside because farmers cant afford to keep them as pets.

They'll exist in zoos only.

I have no issues with anyone who chooses to be vegan / vegetarian. Im a firm believer in choice.
Personally I do enjoy eating meat but wouldn't force my views on others.

So if someone killed a one year old rabbit. Shot them and skinned them and gutted them they would have a proper Life. Hopping about and then some predator comes along because they want a freebie rather than buy meat in the supermarket

We really are a country of animal haters. I would drop dead before I hurt an animal

Grapewrath · 11/03/2026 18:44

Meat and dairy farming is horrific. There is nothing anyone can say to evidence otherwise. I had zero intention of ever going vegan until I visited a farm.
Knowing this information doesn’t mean you have to go vegan. It’s entirely up to you how you live.

The fields full of animals that farmers have right now will be sold on and killed

MauvePombear · 11/03/2026 18:48

I don't force my view onto others either. My brother eats meat. I've never told him to go vegan

Not once

Also- some of these replies are wild.
I have been vegan for many years- I had 3 healthy term babies and bf them all. I have no health problems- my bloods are perfect, I have thick hair, I’m a healthy weight and I strength train 4 times a week.
i don’t use any UPF and the only vitamin I take is b12

Surely not. You should be dreaming about rotisserie chicken and then going to devour it in the car park because your hubby said you looked grey

haha in my whole 40 years as veggie and several of those vegan nobody has described me as grey. Weirdly every person who used to be veggie and now eats meat uses that they were ‘grey’ ‘pale’ and exhausted. Makes me wonder what the fuck they were eating?

Sassylovesbooks · 11/03/2026 19:12

It's your choice if you want to be a meat eater, vegetarian or vegan.

I am a meat eater, although we do eat some vegetarian meals per week too.

Paper notes are polymer free

You're incorrect about phones

I can't remember the last time I used cash

I don't want to eat meat. Hth

Actually no that doesn’t help, uk polymer bank notes contain trace amounts of tallow in its early production process and electonics and smart TVs etc contain animal cholesterol in it’s production, yes there are vegan options available but not easily and they are expensive, a lot of biodegradable items we use in our homes for various things contain animal proteins due to how they breakdown but your “hth” comment isn’t really helpful

BeOchreDog · 11/03/2026 19:29

Over 95% of dairy farms in the UK are Red Tractor certified. Euthanasia of calves is disallowed and calves must be kept with their mother for at least five weeks before they are weaned, they aren’t removed or killed at birth.

I'm in Scotland. There are some paper notes here. Your point?

You're wrong about phones like I said before. A quick Google search will confirm that. I don't have a TV. Smart or other

Red tractor have awful welfare standards. A quick Google search would confirm this.

This is what your quick google search comes up with! But fair play if you have a vegan mobile they are bloody expensive and if you don’t use uk money , nor watch tv then you have no need to worry and yes in your case meat is indeed murder oh and if you don’t use biodegradable items in your home then also fair play to you oh and also some house paint and plaster contains animal derivatives too

Thank you for the replies so far… it’s a lot to consider!

One factor that worries me is i struggle with anaemia. My ferritin is also on the floor. I worry how I would be if I cut out meat, given that I struggle to tolerate the iron supplements.

OP the ability to follow a vegan diet is genetic. Studies are starting to prove it but it's always been completely obvious.
More people cm manage a vegetarian diet but still not all.

Honestly don't let anyone guilt you into it. Life is hard enough as it is.

PaddingtonsMarmaladeSandwich · 10/03/2026 22:21

UABU to change your diet based on that.

We are biologically omnivores. You can always look out for dairy / meat bred in better conditions.

This ^ These animals are bred for consumption. If there wasn't a market for them, they probably wouldnt have been alive at all. Your diet, your choice.

Knittedanimal · 11/03/2026 19:44

At the risk of sounding self rightous 🙄 we humans treat animals abominably purely for the sake of our taste buds and cultural conditioning.
Once the Pandora's box is open it can be difficult to keep avoiding the truth.
Being vegan is really easy. Even 30 years ago when I made the change it was managable. I had some wobbles in the early years but always reminded myself that no egg is worth macerating a chick for, and no pork chop is worth throwing a piglet at a wall for or crating its mother. Dairy cows are amongst the most ill treated animals and the idea that their babies are taken from them so we can drink their milk is repugnant and morally bereft to me.
There are so many foods available that are animal free and you can have a rich and varied diet these days. I'm really happy to share some recipes and tips if you like.

It was easy for you. As people gain knowledge, it's becoming known why some people find veganism natural and easy and others are just constantly craving meat, unwell and plain unable to stick to
the diet.

The self-righteous pontificating will continue a few years until the science become more detailed and widely known but it nonetheless remains highly irritating.
