To expect toilet roll to last longer than this??

RoomDynamics · 10/03/2026 19:00

In the house it's me, teen dd, ds 12, ds 5, ds 4 and ds 2. Younger 2 are still in nappies (something I'm hoping to work on over easter) and dd uses the downstairs loo most the time as her bedroom is downstairs,

On Sunday eve we had a Asda delivery and I bought a pack of 12 Andrex “mega” rolls. I put one upstairs yesterday and by this morning i had to put another one in. Downstairs isn’t much better either there’s only a few squares left so will need to replace that later on when i go in. Today they've all been at school until apart from dd, ds 12 and my youngest but no ones unwell with a cold or anything

Maybe I've been conned and they aren't mega at all but they aren't lasting much longer than a normal roll. It isn't the end of the world but they were £8 and ill likely need to order more for next weeks shop!! Just a lighthearted post

I think there is an extra few people in our house the Amount of toilet paper we go through!!! I buy the big boxes of bamboo stuff....it lasts for a few months (48 rolls) 😂

pavillion1 · 10/03/2026 23:05

Loo roll definitely but also toothpaste right now 😡

Sandsnake · 10/03/2026 23:06

It’s a well known fact that children are in league with toilet paper manufacturers to boost their sales.

tutugogo · 10/03/2026 23:08

Not sure how many sheets are on a mega roll but the 2 of us seem to go through loads since dh retired, the 24 pack I bought 2 weeks ago is mostly gone

Lilyhatesjaz · 10/03/2026 23:08

I think the rolls are small than they used to be and paper is thinner so you need more.

PinkPomeloFruit · 10/03/2026 23:10

I highly recommend who gives a crap. The rolls last ages.

ElusiveSunshine · 10/03/2026 23:15

Totally recommend Costco toilet roll over any supermarket or branded. You get it in a bale and honestly it lasts proper long and is nice and soft, don’t buy anything else now and have done the last 4-5 years.

It’s tightly wound on the roll, so is properly compacted like all loo rolls used to be and you get a decent proper roll. The regular ones are loosely wound and smaller so they just don’t last and I don’t think as good value for money. Plus saves the effort of changing rolls really frequently as they last well.

Sorry haha it sounds likes I’m rather evangelical about this but honestly the Costco bales are hands down the best imo!

I used to get them and they do last, but the prices went up by quite a bit a few months ago and I felt they were just taking advantage so I stopped my subscription.

I switched to andrex mega rolls which are significantly cheaper and last just about as long.

This is definitely true for Sainsbury's recycled

hollyandribbon · 10/03/2026 23:29

I’m sure my kids eat toilet roll. I’m yet to catch them in the act but I’m sure of it.

catinateacup · 10/03/2026 23:33

There’s definitely less on a roll than there used to be. All that “soft and quilted” 3-ply nonsense is just so that there’s more air in it! 🤣 I also find loo roll shreds and disintegrates into fibres everywhere these days.

@RoomDynamics Loo roll is expensive. The cheapest stuff is so thin that buying it is "false economy".

Your post triggered an old memory that amused me just now: At some point in the late 90's our Dad told my brother and I to "Stop throwing whole toilet rolls down the toilet".

Happyjoe · 11/03/2026 00:02

Partner and I get through a roll a day, pretty much. But we also use it to blow our noises, wipe the wet cat down when she comes in from the rain etc.
I think a roll a day in a household your size is doing ok, tbh I would expect more!

worstnotholiday · 11/03/2026 00:12

Loo roll is so expensive. But it’s not something you can ration without genuine financial desperation. I’d rather give up meat all together than police use of loo roll. They aren’t using it for fun. It’s a practical item. If they were taking rolls for pranks different matter.

When I had more money I would back Costco loo roll, it’s thick, well made and lasts. Meanwhile I don’t give a crap brand were far too thin imo. But now I use store bought. My worst pet peeve is scented loo roll- which in Lidl is now cheaper- it’s 3ply for 24 roll at £4.99 whilst the non scented is 2ply for 24 roll at £5.99. Which means even the producers know that I will take loo roll which falls apart rather than that which gives me thrush?!! I want cheap crap without the thrush please! I’m poor not stupid!

Lelo33 · 11/03/2026 01:00

Atm amazon cheap andrex 24 under 8 quid never last long

BusterGonad · 11/03/2026 03:27

I don't think expensive quilted etc toilet paper is worth it, ime the same amount of squares is used. I get standard toilet paper and it last pretty well.

ElinoristhenewEnid · 11/03/2026 10:53

I used to love Regina Camomile - used to buy it on offer from Wilko - a roll lasted me 10-14 days. Cannot get it nowadays.
Use WGAC bamboo rolls double length - a roll lasts me up to 4 weeks and although thin it does not disintegrate so do not need to use so many sheets.

CruCru · 11/03/2026 11:15

There are six people in your house (although two in nappies). It’s easy to go through toilet roll quickly.

Yeah, I've definitely noticed this. I by 4-ply but they're still smaller now. Annoying.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 11/03/2026 11:22

I live alone and as long as I'm not ill and don't have visitors, one roll of the thick Andrex lasts me about eight days.

I am now worrying that I am not toilet-papering correctly.

CrocusesFlowering · 11/03/2026 11:23

I know this is totally off-topic @RoomDynamics but would it not occur to your teenage daughter to replace the toilet paper herself?

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 11/03/2026 11:24

Sounds a lot like our house op. We use alot. The kids do waste some but I know I use alot too

Vintageblueribbon · 11/03/2026 11:29

I buy homebargains 'nicky' loo rolls
9 rolls for £2.99
There is only two of us in our house and im lucky if it lasts 10 days
Honest to god,I swear dp uses a roll everytime he goes (and it doesn't help that hes dying of a cold)
I put one out yesterday and its almost gone today

OonaStubbs · 11/03/2026 11:31

People are wasteful with toilet roll, people use 2-3 squares at a time sometimes. I was always taught to use 1 square at a time and to fold it over for a second wipe.
