Thinking of buying a Smeg kettle but are they really worth the price? £162 for a kettle?! They look really beautiful but are they worth it?

AIBU to buy one????

I've got one and love it for its look. It's no faster or slower than any other kettle I've had. It replaced my kitchenaid kettle that didn't last as long as it should've.

NotAnotherScarf · 10/03/2026 22:41

If you buy a cheap one that lasts 2 years (mine is currently 8 years at £20). That's 16 years before the Smeg one works out cheaper...if you think it will last 16 years go for it...

I have no idea bit £162 on a kettle seems bonkers

Wouldn’t recommend. A friend bought me a Smeg kettle as a housewarming gift and I bought myself the matching toaster. The kettle lasted just under 2 years and the toaster about 2.5 years. Appalling for such an expensive price point. The kettle was also really slow. I replaced it with a Kenwood Dusk Kettle for under £40, which is the fastest kettle I have ever owned. Boils one mug of water in about 1 minute, absolutely brilliant.

Smeg appliances look great but are rubbish. They used to be manufactured in Italy but now are mass-produced to much lower standards in China.

If it's a money thing and you feel stressed about justifying it, I'll tell you two things:

  1. Frame it in context of buying your favourite alternative. Can you buy e.g. a cheaper kettle and a massage? A cheaper kettle and money in your weekend away pot? A cheaper kettle and money toward a phone upgrade? Put it in terms of "I could.have the kettle, or I could have A kettle AND...."
  1. Once you buy it, you'll want something else. It's human nature. It's exactly why I haven't bought a Dyson hair dryer, airwrap, airfryer, hobby upgrade, tea tray, velvetiser, new trainers, a Nintendo etc.... because as soon as I have them, yes I'll like them, but I'll have dropped a few £k on stuff I don't really need. I have a hairdryer, oven (and mostly make big meals), shoes that are still OK, just not new-looking, I have a milk frother and hob etc. The system is designed to make us want more and pay more and marketing makes us want it.

By all means buy the kettle. I have a few wild purchases and if I had to look at it daily and it needed replacing, you know what, I would buy it without hesitation.

Edited

Soo true 👏

In Which? magazine tests, Smeg items almost always do terribly. It makes me wonder why anyone buys them.

saraclara · 10/03/2026 23:17

I love my Dualit. Ignore the weird vertical grey shadow on the pic. It's a white kettle

VoiceFromThePit · 10/03/2026 23:22

Dualit hold up well for years, but like any kettles need descaling from time to time.

Derbee · 11/03/2026 00:14

@Canadianskates our Dualit was £99.99 from Costco, if you have a membership?

NZKate · 11/03/2026 00:19

I love how they look and I have bought 3 or 4 because of that but they all end up leaking at the bottom of the clear plastic water level bit. If you google it it's a well known fault.

SapphireSeptember · 11/03/2026 00:20

My Breville kettle was (I think) £32 and has lasted three and a half years (including boiling it millions of times to make up DS' formula.) I love that kettle and I'll be sad when it goes. (It's metal and has a solid bottom, I don't like the ones with the exposed element.) I got it in black, naturally. 😁
I eventually want to get a variable temperature kettle, but the Breville one is £80 so I need to save up! (The Argos Cookworks one is less than half that but I want it to last.)

PurpleFlower1983 · 11/03/2026 00:43

I love mine, it’s fast and looks good.

It depends on how you define "worth the price." In my book, if Smeg are the equivalent of Swiss- made watches and you know that the kettle will happily work for decades, then yes, it could be worth it. But if it's only going to last 5 or 6 years then it's going to be an expensive, short-lived purchase.

Ultimately, though, it's your money and your choice how to spend it.

They have dreadful reviews

RedRiverShore6 · 11/03/2026 06:25

The KitchenAid kettles are also heavy, and seem to do better in reviews than Smeg, I really like mine, though they are not very good for left handed people, probably a lot of the temperature controlled ones aren't because the temp gauge part is on the front for right handedness. Though Smeg doesn't have the a temperature gauge on the kettle so maybe ok

DontKillSteve · 11/03/2026 06:30

Dunno about Smeg but my Dualit one is 7 years old and like new. I am diligent about descaling it though- hard water region.

PurpleCoo · 11/03/2026 07:40

RedRiverShore6 · 10/03/2026 17:04

Though if it's a temperature controlled one it looks like my KitchenAid one and they are for right handed people, my left handed DH leaves it the wrong way round annoyingly after he has used it and moaned about it being for right handed people

I am confused by this as I have the temperature controlled one, I am left handed and can't see what you mean about it being the 'wrong way around '. Mine has SMEG written on both sides so it still looks correct when it's the right way round for me.

broadsheetbabe · 11/03/2026 07:43

Dualit here. Had ours at least 10 years with no problems. As previously mentioned, they are repairable and British made too!

Procrastination4 · 11/03/2026 07:46

Picoloangel · 10/03/2026 17:24

We bought one and v quickly the enamel/ paint chipped off the lid. We are pretty careful with household stuff and don’t exactly use it much either. Added to the poor finish it is just a kettle - nothing remotely extra or enhanced about it. I wouldn’t buy another one. Complete waste of money.

Had the very same experience as Picoloangel. At first, I thought we were unlucky and that it was a “dud” kettle. Bought a second Smeg and the paint chipped off of that too. Had zero satisfaction from Smeg customer services so I’d never buy any of their products again.

Just read your update. If your Dualit kettle is like my Dualit toaster, good choice! I’ve had mine for years, it still looks great, and does a really good job.

Looking at the Smeg ones they do look fine, the KitchenAid one has a thermometer thing on the kettle at the front which I do use and DH always leaves the kettle the wrong way round so it's at the back

cakewitch · 11/03/2026 07:58

Style over substance. Ive had 2 and they both broke very quickly.

Tamtim · 11/03/2026 08:07

I can’t get over ‘Smeg’ (yes I know it’s the brand) being written on a kitchen appliance!

As for if it’s worth spending a lot of money on kettles and toasters etc. I do think so, they don’t last longer or work better. However, if you love it and can afford it, why not? We got matching Kitchen Aid appliances because we loved the look. The kettle has always had issues.

Ah. Sorry, misunderstood... That's reading when you haven't finished your morning coffee for you 🤦‍♀️😂

I just looked at the kitchen aid ones and they do look lovely. Ridiculous it's the wrong way round for left handed people though, really poorly thought out from kitchen aid!

Not sure about the durability of Smeg but Dualit Classic kettles are slightly cheaper, British made and designed to be fully repairable.

Love my Dualit for all the reasons you have said. They are great kettles.
