Thinking of buying a Smeg kettle but are they really worth the price? £162 for a kettle?! They look really beautiful but are they worth it?

AIBU to buy one????

We had one - it wasn’t particularly special from memory (we have a Quooker tap now, which is my favourite thing in the kitchen - def recommend that, not a gimmick). I do really like the Sage toaster that we have though - I think a kettle from that range would probably be priced similarly to Smeg.

Unpaidviewer · 10/03/2026 18:16

My experience has been that you are paying for the brand with smeg. We now have a dualit kettle which is far better quality.

weareallcats · 10/03/2026 18:19

I’ve just googled and I think I would be tempted for the stove top kettle - much prefer the shape to the one you plug in.

My daughter bought me a red one for my 65th. I quite like it. It's name is Lister.
It works well I've had it a couple years. She paid about $300cn for it. So hopefully it will last for several years.

That'll be the gas usage going up instead then 🤣

Gas is cheaper than electricity per unit so it's cheaper to boil a kettle on the gas hob than use an electric one. If my gas usage has gone up slightly my electricity usage has come down more.

My showers run off the central heating boiler and aren't electric either. I use very little electricity and annoyingly pay more in the standing charge than the amount I actually use.

If money was no object I’d buy the dolce and gabbana smeg kettle but it’s £599 😵‍💫so no chance. It’s truly a thing of beauty.

I saw this and really wanted it but cannot possibly justify that price tag!

Thedogscollar · 10/03/2026 18:23

I don't like the sound of the word Smeg for some reason it sets me on edge.
I've got a Bosch kettle had it years n years still going strong.
They literally boil water so I'd not pay that sort of money to do that.

The perfect name for it 😆

My smeg fridge turned out to be an absolute hunk of shit. Style over substance

Yes! We moved into a house with a built in Smeg fridge freezer. Worst piece of kitchen equipment I've ever had.

OP for a kettle or toaster, I'd go with Dualit.

SpottyAlpaca · 10/03/2026 18:33

It’s just a kettle. It boils water, and it won’t do it any better or faster than my 10 year old Russell Hobbs which cost £25 from Argos.

Given that, spending £162 on a designer kettle is objectively a waste of money. But if you have so much money that you can easily afford to waste that sum on such a kettle, that’s up to you. So YANBU.

Acutissima · 10/03/2026 18:38

The best kettles are the variable temperature ones. Good for green tea, and white tea, or any other tea. Temperature setting for specific coffees. Warm water for flatbread or pizza dough etc. Dualit is a good make, not sure if they have variable temp ones.

A lone Smeg looks like you couldn't afford the full set, so went with the token cheapest item... But avoiding the matching twee set is a good thing, the fridges are shit too lol, no space in them. A cliche of style over substance.

Neither could I sadly. The thing with a kettle is it’s always out on show. Obviously I could have got a bog standard functional kettle for a few quid but I wanted something that aesthetically pleased me and a regular smeg kettle does that. If I upgrade my kitchen again I’d happily have the D&G kettle as a birthday present 😝

CloudPop · 10/03/2026 18:41

We are asked coffee machine owners. It’s unbearably high maintenance. Can’t stand it

Obeseandashamed · 10/03/2026 18:43

I have a smeg toaster and it’s not great as started heating by very unevenly after a year but I guess you can’t go wrong with a kettle if it only has one function. I have a kitchenaid kettle which has the adjustable temperature function and love that as it’s very useful.

JMSA · 10/03/2026 18:43

My pastel green one was a thing of beauty, but unfortunately the Smeg lettering came off. They’re only stickers, albeit long-lasting ones.

NoName47 · 10/03/2026 18:44

Every appliance in our new house was Smeg, all crap and most had to be replaced within 2-3 years. Would never buy Smeg! Having said that I don't have the kettle so can't particularly comment on that.

tinyspiny · 10/03/2026 18:45

As someone who has had horses and knows about sheath cleaning I wouldn’t want anything with Smeg written on it in my house as it just makes me think of smegma .

RockGirl · 10/03/2026 18:55

I have a black one. It’s not special and I don’t think worth the money. The paint is chipped but I coloured it in with a black Sharpie so you cannot tell.

I had a pink one and when that died after near constant use over eight years we bought a blue one. They are lovely looking kettles and I would not hesitate to get another.

But that is not an outstandingly long time for a kettle to last.
All my kettles last that sort of time, and the most recent one we bought cost under £15, which is typical (inflations adjusted) of all the kettles I have owned.

I don't understand paying 11 or 12x the price for something that does exactly the same function.

FOJN · 10/03/2026 16:48

Not sure about the durability of Smeg but Dualit Classic kettles are slightly cheaper, British made and designed to be fully repairable.

I've had 2 Dualit expensive kettles. Neither lasted more than a year. Too lazy to investigate warranty and not sure repair outside of warranty would be worth it. Have had a cheapo Bosch kettle for the last 18 months. Dualit toaster bought at the same time as kettle 1 is still going strong though.

Lovelynames123 · 10/03/2026 19:00

I have a rose gold Smeg kettle and toaster, high shine, and I love them! I recently bought a house after years of renting after divorce, and I bought everything new. I did question my sanity then my dad said, if you like them, buy them so I did!

The kettle works and looks gorgeous, no regrets

ViciousCurrentBun · 10/03/2026 19:00

I mean it boils water, I just paid £40 for a new kettle and the previous one was similar and lasted about 7 years.

Flatinbed · 10/03/2026 16:36

We've got one at work (dunno who's budget that came out of....I work in a school!).

Anyway, it's very irritatingly slow. Can't recommend.

And we wonder why we pay high taxes!!!!
We paid for it!!!

What a strange comment...everyone spends more than they need to on things they like, when a cheaper alternative is usually available

But it looks gorgeous. We have the toaster too. The are always on show and just look so smart.
