Thinking of buying a Smeg kettle but are they really worth the price? £162 for a kettle?! They look really beautiful but are they worth it?

We've got one at work (dunno who's budget that came out of....I work in a school!).

Anyway, it's very irritatingly slow. Can't recommend.

FreshInks · 10/03/2026 16:36

In my experience, they’re not worth the cost. My cheap kettle from Amazon lasted me longer. I think you’re paying for the brand.

Leavesandthings · 10/03/2026 16:37

Well, kettles boil water. Best to look for a well made one. Beyond that, if you would like to pay Smeg £162 for an attractive looking kettle that is your choice!

Lararoft · 10/03/2026 16:37

Its a waste of money imo!

Kryton to Arnold Rimmer: "You are a smeeeeeeeeee-heeeeeeeee".

RedRiverShore6 · 10/03/2026 16:47

Well, I have a KitchenAid one which is similar in price and probably quality so if you like it and can afford it, I would say yes. You are definitely paying for the brand though, like I am. Both are probably a bit style over substance.

holachicatita · 10/03/2026 16:47

I don't think they're attractive at all with the big letters across them!

FOJN · 10/03/2026 16:48

Not sure about the durability of Smeg but Dualit Classic kettles are slightly cheaper, British made and designed to be fully repairable.

PickledElectricity · 10/03/2026 16:49

If that's what you like then go for it. I bought a dualit kettle and toaster and it makes me happy.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 10/03/2026 16:51

I had a pink one and when that died after near constant use over eight years we bought a blue one. They are lovely looking kettles and I would not hesitate to get another.

NotnowMildrid · 10/03/2026 16:51

Very expensive, but I like them, they’re well made and very smart imo (have matching toaster).

I’ve had lots of crappy cheap makes over the years. Never again. I think you usually pay for what you get.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 10/03/2026 16:53

john Lewis are usually quite competitive on price. Worth a look on their website.

CraftyGin · 10/03/2026 16:53

Yikes - compared to a bog standard £20 one, it would have to be very, very special.

DinoLil · 10/03/2026 16:53

What does it do to make it so expensive? Hops off the base, makes your tea and delivers it on a silver tray?

My old kettle gave up the ghost about 5yrs ago. I bought a £15 replacement in B&M and it is really fast!

RedRiverShore6 · 10/03/2026 16:54

Have you shopped around, is it a particular colour you want, some colours are sometimes on offer.

pouletvous · 10/03/2026 16:55

Kettles look tatty after about a year.

So no!

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 10/03/2026 16:56

If money was no object I’d buy the dolce and gabbana smeg kettle but it’s £599 😵‍💫so no chance. It’s truly a thing of beauty.

BarbiesDreamHome · 10/03/2026 16:56

What are you hoping to buy for that money?

If its reliability, tbh you could replace a cheaper one 5 times and still make a saving.

If its speed, temperature controls, then are there others that are better at that?

Or is it aesthetic?

I suspect you'll struggle to find anyone saying it's a one-of-a-kind, life changing product.

But if you have £160 to spend on a kettle and it brings you joy and its what you want then why not? You don't need to justify it. You'll spend the next 5 years looking at it so don't go "cheap" because you're stressed about justifying it x

RedRiverShore6 · 10/03/2026 16:57

Blimey, JL have a Dolce and Gabbana one for £599, with a matching toaster for the same price

deeahgwitch · 10/03/2026 16:57

My sister’s gorgeous pink Smeg kettle was unusable after a few months. She’s using a brilliant Tesco cheapie now.

My friend got smeg kettle toaster and fridge when moved in new house. None have survived more than a handful of years. Our samsung fridge freezer is going well as is our wilko toaster in the same time frame( 9 years nearly)

RedRiverShore6 · 10/03/2026 16:59

I have got a small Smeg bean to cup coffee machine which I like.

Hibernatingsloth · 10/03/2026 17:00

I love my Smeg kettle.
I must admit, the selling point was the gorgeous pink colour and a close second was the compact size.. I wanted a small kettle.
I echo what a PP has said though, about it being slow to boil.

tutugogo · 10/03/2026 17:00

No, kettles get clogged up with limescale and break, price point doesn’t seem to affect longevity (the £10 one at work which is boiled many more times a day than a home one is 5 years old and counting, the fancier kettle donated nearly new by outgoing staff member broke 2 years ago)
