To think that everyone has to do their bit and reduce fuel consumption

Noras · 09/03/2026 17:04

Due to the situation in the Gulf it seems clear to me that there is an issue with fuel.

To me it seems obvious that we all have to try to slightly reduce our fuel consumption even by just a bit eg not having the heating on or turning the temperature down by a degree or so, or reducing the time that the temperature is on. Also, maybe thinking more before making a journey in the car or just driving slower to reduce fuel consumption.

Even if we all reduced our fuel consumption by 10% more that would make a huge difference I think.

So am I unreasonable to think like that?

Op don't forget this, a few years ago Glasgow held the G9 summit.
The flights to and from Glasgow created more CO2 Gases than Scotland creates in a year.

What we do as individuals is mean less until the serious poluters get on board and countries like China actually start to care about what they put into the atmosphere

China will say they pollute so much to manufacture the plastic tat the West is obsessed with buying at cheap prices .

Noras · 12/03/2026 06:36

We could stop buying the heaps of plastic Chinese rubbish. So much stuff is tat and as for fast clothes fashion that needs to be looked at maybe,

People won’t though , it’s too far gone .

People think that as long as they give their Shein hauls to charity shops once they’ve discarded them, it’s all ok.

Perhaps it would make any difference but we are facing a colossal energy crisis and I was brought up to think that every bit helps.

i don’t mind too much turning off the heating earlier and keeping it low. I air dry my hair. I do run the tumble drier a bit but we have a heat pump one. I found heat drying clothes inside made the house colder.

i agree they people with kids and schools work have an issue. However i do see people who literally drive to the corner shop all the time or even to schools 10 minutes walk away.

We could ensue that workplaces turn off more lights when not used.

@Noras I drive to the corner shop.

i can’t walk it. You’d judge me. So.

Some people genuinely can't walk to their local shops. My infirm parents, for example. However, the majority of people can. This isn't complicated.

RvLl · 12/03/2026 08:48

I drive in 2 mins to a shop that would take me 15 mins to walk to (and 15 mins back). It minimises my time out of the house, which given my responsibilities (and dog who I am not willing to tie up outside), is what I need to do.

faerylights · 12/03/2026 08:54

It’s not people driving their kids to school or setting their heating to 20 instead of 18 that are the issue - and it makes me laugh that so many people think they’re making a difference by walking to Tesco in the pissing rain when you have people like Kylie Jenner chartering private jets for a 20 minute journey on a weekly basis 🙄

Or worrying about lightning a scented candle whilst the furnaces in china and India are permanently ablaze .

Exactly - it’s just an excuse to sneer and judge imo.

Pricelessadvice · 12/03/2026 09:08

People still have to live their daily lives- kids, work, caring for relatives. It’s not always that cut and dried.
But I wish people wouldn’t panic buy fuel. That’s a sure way to end up with a shortage.

Nmnss · 12/03/2026 09:22

When I was in primary (15 or so years ago). My mum walked me to school. I was surprised why those who lived as near or even nearer to the school would drive....

Witchesbe · 12/03/2026 09:25

The easiest solution to school traffic would be if kids made their way by themselves as they do elsewhere...

Most kids make their own way from year 5 where I live. Still a fair amount of traffic from everyone in the other year groups though. My elder 2 walked with friends from aged 9 but I’ll always have to drive my youngest as he’ll never be safe enough to walk on his own.

ThatCyanCat · 12/03/2026 09:29

I do wonder what the global effect would be if we met most of our energy needs with wind and solar power.

I suspect it would be much more peaceful.

This 70s cartoonist was rather prescient.

Fewer cars on the road is more pleasant for other people who live in the area who dont drive, its not just about cat drivers needs

As explained, its never that simple. Parking at schools in the UK is a PITA.
Nobody is doing it for the hell of it.

The majority who drive will be going straight to work or somewhere else gym / shopping / elderly relatives very few will be doing the school run then going straight home (unless they are off the back of a nightshift or ill / disability).
Or maybe they are just rubbish at getting out the door in the morning so use car for speed.

But whatever someone's reason nobody is doing it for the hell of it.

Parents driving kids to school is not going to make a huge difference when you look elsewhere in the world.

Needspaceforlego · 12/03/2026 10:17

A few years back on our school P1 FB group one of the Dads, new to Scotland, was trying to persuade people that cycling with kid to school was a wonderful idea 'I don't know why more don't do it'

I think he gave up by Christmas!

Buying plastic tat is something that needs to stop.
Manufacturers don't help by labelling stuff a leather for you to dig deeper to realise is synthetic leather.

I agree. People are obsessed with cheap temu furniture that wouldn’t last a year, same with cheap clothing, cheap jewellery made from god knows what metal.
I always feel annoyed seeing stores closing down, jobs lost for the sake of a shein haul, half of the stuff is see through bin worthy.

Schools tend to not like that till later or even last year of primary - and TBH here I don't think it would be safe as duel carraige way between us and their primary school.

Secondary most kids are getting there under their own steam - though that may be changing for some and for others there's no obvious route but driving.

There a new secondary being built near family - it country lanes no lights and a dangerous junction - it's got quite a high kill rate - or open fields with no lights which will eventually be a country park with no lighting according to planning- and no buses as they ssumed dkids would walk or cycle - kids and parents are reluctant to do that as it doesn't feel safe so it's added to local traffic. Parents and now councilor are trying to sort something out.

They did same with a new hopsital near us assumed staff and patients didn't need parking or bus routes - the patients would come in ambulances and perhaps staff teleported- they belatedly had to increase parking make some signage and put on bus routes - I'm staggered it was happeneing a good year after hopsital opened and wasn't thought through prior.

So everyone who drives their kids to school is doing so because they have no other choice? Everyone?

The whole transport thing needs to be thought out at the planning stage. Why build stuff out of town without transport links?

Same with out of town retail and office parks, then wonder why city's and town centres are dying

I remember multiple reminders in assembly about not parking on the zig zag lines. But parents continued to do so.
