To think that everyone has to do their bit and reduce fuel consumption

Noras · 09/03/2026 17:04

Due to the situation in the Gulf it seems clear to me that there is an issue with fuel.

To me it seems obvious that we all have to try to slightly reduce our fuel consumption even by just a bit eg not having the heating on or turning the temperature down by a degree or so, or reducing the time that the temperature is on. Also, maybe thinking more before making a journey in the car or just driving slower to reduce fuel consumption.

Even if we all reduced our fuel consumption by 10% more that would make a huge difference I think.

So am I unreasonable to think like that?

But that’s the point. Most people do the (very minor) things you mention anyway. We don’t need telling to do them.

Well I'd be delighted if they do but a hell of a lot of people don't care at all and use the car all the time for minor things like 'popping out for a pint of milk'

Also, look at the next post about straws after my original post. That's how many people think about driving whenever and however they like. They want to, so bugger everyone and everything.

OneTealTurtle · 11/03/2026 18:23

Because I want to, and that’s enough 😃

Honestly I hate paper straws and think they've been a big mistake.

ForPlumReader · 11/03/2026 18:51

I find people really resistant to walking small distances. I'm not sure if it's just habit to take the car, or if they genuinely don't care. In order to change lifestyle you need to make a very conscious decision and force yourself to make the small changes that might cause you minor inconvenience (I would argue it won't but it might seem like it does). It doesn't enter the heads of most people to do anything other than their usual routine.

Only if you’re drinking sugary/fizzy/acidic drinks.

Which is pretty much all cold drinks, unless you're just drinking plain water.

Yes. I drink coffee in the morning, water throughout the day. Wine occasionally in the evenings (which granted is sugary and acidic, but I’d look a bit of a dick drinking that through a straw).

Fair enough, I can't stand plain water so everything I drink is either caffeinated, sugary or carbonated (or all three).

A lot of people do have to drive their kids to school.

But the ones who arrive an hour before to get the best spot (and no I am not exaggerating - the earliest I've seen someone who was obviously a waiting parent in my road was 2.07 - and pick up is from 3.05!) do not have to drive. And the catchment for the local schools is fairly small, they can definitely walk. Cycling is an option too and the more people cycle, the safer it is (and the more it encourages others to, at least on nice days).

Yes it's annoying when the slebs use their private jets but it's not just about climate change, it's about reducing local air pollution as well.

I also agree that the "return to office" thing is not helping. It has to be better for the environment if people only have to go to the office twice a week (and frees up the roads and trains for people who have to go their workplaces in person more often).

Edited

You have no idea what else is going on in that person's life.

Did they wake up from night shift and miss read the clock?

Had they been to an appointment and think I don't have time to get back to the house and back out.
Feeling a bit under the weather and not up to the walk?
There might also be the people whos kids aren't from the local catchment, moved for whatever reason.

Nobody is sitting outside a school for an hour for no reason.

I remember the 'school run mum blame' being a thing back in the 90s when I was a child and my mum had to do it. It's a topic that's never gone away.

I can't cycle and wouldn't dare on the rounds here anyway. Ive had to take the career hit of having to work within travelling distance of school (thanks to family court enforcing a school my ex chose and I disagreed with, they agreed with him and said my need to work was irrelevant, not that I'm bitter). More flexible working would be better for the environment, family life and most other things, yet it seems to be going back the other way to how things were pre-covid.

Yes, mums get the blame for most things I find!

Which my friend has to do because the NHS wont do a knee replacement. He lives in a housing assciation flat. With nowhere to put a mobility scooter

And Formula One racing?????????????????????

And i guess they allow one to put their fingers in their ears and still drink at the same time

Flamingojune · 11/03/2026 21:36

ThiagoJones · 11/03/2026 16:36

Well… this would involve me and 3 children (including the autistic one who can’t cycle so he would have to be in some sort of trailer that fits an older child) cycling to school, then me cycling 12 miles down the motorway to get to work in 25 mins after school drop off, then the same on the way home.

Everyone is different

JackGrealishsCalves · 11/03/2026 21:39

If you could contact my employer and suggest this, which would avoid me having to make a pointless 70 mile round trip twice a week, for a job I can do 100% from home, that would be grand

Needspaceforlego · 11/03/2026 21:45

Re the WFH thing.

I think it's very difficult for young people to learn if they are spending all their time in their bedrooms, working, xboxing sleeping.
Zero point in them going into the office if all the experience is hiding away at home.

So I totally get the need to have people in offices

morningmists · 11/03/2026 21:51

Noras · 09/03/2026 17:34

Any chance of leading a campaign in your area to get better buses? I guess the question would be if there was a bus would you use it ?

it seems a chicken and egg situation as the bus services are hopeless but won’t get better unless we all get in buses.

When the government cut local government grants, local councils had to slash bus subsidies.

Pre Covid, my husband worked almost 100% from home (by special arrangement with his company), unless he arranged to meet with some of his direct reports in London. Covid happened, and everyone started working from home. Last year they decided everyone had to be back into the office 3 days a week, even those who had special arrangement to work from home (there was a very valid reason for this arrangement).
He now has to do a 100 mile round trip to the nearest office 3 times a week. None of his team are there, and he doesn’t speak to a single person while he’s there as he has absolutely no dealing with anyone else in that office. He just travels all that way to sit at a desk talking to people on Teams, instead of doing that at home.

Needspaceforlego · 11/03/2026 21:58

@ThiagoJones I'd agree thats pointless it would make more sense to travel too where his colleagues are even if it was less frequently

morningmists · 11/03/2026 21:58

People always focus on car journeys (and flights)

But actually buying endless stuff is.also a massive issue. Nearly everything is made abroad and shipped here. Using vast amounts of fuel in the process.
Same with your deliveroos and next day delivery. Again so much fuel is used in transportation.

Consolidate shopping into one trip was what I meant. Not random pissy individual bits. Think ahead, freeze milk, UHT milk, whatever etc. Not once in 50 years have I driven for a single item.

Have you ever waited YEARS for a knee replacement Waited so long that its buggered up your other knee where you have put pressure on that to avoid putting pressure on the bad one. Its impossible to carry loads of shopping at once. He does have to carry it from the car to inside his flat. Cant believe ive had to spoon feed this.

If ppl wanted this country to be fucking war ready then they shouldnt have kept voting for shit like this.

BurntBroccoli · 12/03/2026 00:32

JenniferBooth · 09/03/2026 17:14

Like the school run parents who get their cars out even though they are within walking distance?

And sit in them with their engines running for 25 minutes while looking at their phones…

Obviously that is not the case for MOST people though. You didn't need to explain all that. That is a genuine reason.

hattie43 · 12/03/2026 05:32

It’s only the leisure aspect people could reduce car usage now . So many people commute long distance to work . That would be my main focus and find a job closer to home .

EmmaSummerHat · 12/03/2026 05:42

I drive for work sometimes very long distances. If I don’t go I don’t get paid. Filling up my car every other day is going to get expensive
