To think that everyone has to do their bit and reduce fuel consumption

Noras · 09/03/2026 17:04

Due to the situation in the Gulf it seems clear to me that there is an issue with fuel.

To me it seems obvious that we all have to try to slightly reduce our fuel consumption even by just a bit eg not having the heating on or turning the temperature down by a degree or so, or reducing the time that the temperature is on. Also, maybe thinking more before making a journey in the car or just driving slower to reduce fuel consumption.

Even if we all reduced our fuel consumption by 10% more that would make a huge difference I think.

So am I unreasonable to think like that?

Why do adults need straws

Some need for disability reasons.
Others want for elegance, prefer for teeth too.

Why do adults need straws

Good point. I don’t think I’ve used a straw since I was about 12.

Why do adults need straws

They're better for your teeth.

They're better for your teeth.

Only if you’re drinking sugary/fizzy/acidic drinks.

To suck up all the crap we’re supposed to swallow

I have fatigue. On all manner of things.

All the years I have been an adult, there seem to be constant lectures about various things. I'm fatigued with the lectures. I'm not listening at all any more and I might actively modify my behaviour to spite all those who give these lectures or try to give these nudges.

I'm going to do what I do and you don't have to like it and I'm going to be refusing to take any lectures or nudges about it.

Room for one more 😀

When celebrities like Taylor Swift stop jetting around the world, I'll start thinking about turning my heating down from 19 to 18 degrees. Until then, fuck it.

I'd happily do away with private jets.

Friend of mine who has been waiting for a knee replacenent for seven years on the NHS has no choice but to use his car Both knees are fucked now due to him having to put more pressure on the other one to avoid putting pressure on the bad one. He now cant walk even short distances. Actions have consequences or in this case non action

But surely he benefits if those of us who can reduce consumption, because it stops prices rocketing

With you there. I adulted into credit crash and frankly, it's just gone downhill. Already fed up of "once in generation/s" events, and these things just finish one off. It's ALWAYS something we should not be doing or feel guilty about.
Fuck that

I am walking distance to school. However, I also have to go to work. If I walked I would not be able to get to work on time. What do you suggest I do?

I do sympathise as i think this is a genuine issue for a lot of people. In some instances it can help using a childminder or breakfast club to give you time to walk back before driving to work? I appreciate this won't "help" for a lot of people as often the drive to work passes the school anyway.

Or cycle to school then work

With respect, I’m not paying £12 for breakfast club every day just to avoid dropping my child to school in the car.

Well… this would involve me and 3 children (including the autistic one who can’t cycle so he would have to be in some sort of trailer that fits an older child) cycling to school, then me cycling 12 miles down the motorway to get to work in 25 mins after school drop off, then the same on the way home.

Breakfast clubs and preschool childminders aren't always available or cheap.
Even if they were £10 a day, that's £50 a week, £200 a month, when the cost free option is to drop off using the car and then head to work.
And actually doing either of those options still means she'll be driving to childminder or Breakfast club.

Edit - someone beat me to it Breakfast club is £12 a day, and if you have multiple kids double it. £24 a day, £120 a week, £500 a month for two kids.
Who has that sort of money to throw away?

Reducing 1 millionth of 0.8% of global co2 emissions?

Brownbananaspot · 11/03/2026 18:00

I remember the 'school run mum blame' being a thing back in the 90s when I was a child and my mum had to do it. It's a topic that's never gone away.

I can't cycle and wouldn't dare on the rounds here anyway. Ive had to take the career hit of having to work within travelling distance of school (thanks to family court enforcing a school my ex chose and I disagreed with, they agreed with him and said my need to work was irrelevant, not that I'm bitter). More flexible working would be better for the environment, family life and most other things, yet it seems to be going back the other way to how things were pre-covid.

igelkott2026 · 11/03/2026 18:13

A lot of people do have to drive their kids to school.

But the ones who arrive an hour before to get the best spot (and no I am not exaggerating - the earliest I've seen someone who was obviously a waiting parent in my road was 2.07 - and pick up is from 3.05!) do not have to drive. And the catchment for the local schools is fairly small, they can definitely walk. Cycling is an option too and the more people cycle, the safer it is (and the more it encourages others to, at least on nice days).

Yes it's annoying when the slebs use their private jets but it's not just about climate change, it's about reducing local air pollution as well.

I also agree that the "return to office" thing is not helping. It has to be better for the environment if people only have to go to the office twice a week (and frees up the roads and trains for people who have to go their workplaces in person more often).

Or maybe the "strong men" could just stop having wars all over the place.

It's willy waving at its finest.

Well quite. All these old men throwing missiles around and causing massive environmental damage. They should be prosecuted for crimes to the environment as well as humanity.

Imlyingandthatsthetruth · 09/03/2026 22:16

Well, it doesn't, and the idea that we all drive slower as the price of fuel goes up is laughable. If there is any change then people might drive less, but they sure don't drive slower.

I think when petrol got really expensive a few years ago a lot of people did drive a bit more slowly because the best speed to travel is between 55 and 65 for fuel economy.

Sunbeam18 · 11/03/2026 18:23

Not an unreasonable thought

dailyconniptions · 11/03/2026 18:23

Totally agree. I do this as much as I can anyway. Gentle acceleration and braking and saving trips to do on one run or when I'm going past somewhere anyway. But people won't be told and won't do it. I despise their selfish attitudes.

But that’s the point. Most people do the (very minor) things you mention anyway. We don’t need telling to do them.
