To absolutely loathe the increase in smear campaigns against businesses because of the halal meat debate?

Well it’s not really a debate, is it? You either don’t care, or you’re absolutely seething because your meat may or may not be halal. But irrespectively of what you think about this, AIBU to think that people ‘outing’ businesses on social media about what meat they use and encouraging hundreds of people to smear them not just in posts but reviews to tank their ratings is just crazy?

Hundreds of people commenting ‘I’ve just left them a bad review on google’ because a (British owned baked potato) business extended their trading hours to their Muslim customers? People who have never bought anything from them in their life, probably geographically will never go there. Actively trying to sabotage a business because you think you’re what - some sort of activist?

And don’t get me started on the posts where people reach out to these poor customer service reps in supermarkets to ask them if the meat they sell is halal because of this mad narrative that ‘80% of supermarket meat is halal’ - where has this nonsense come from?!?! 😂 People screenshotting and commenting about how ‘Clare from Lidl’ is avoiding the question when she probably doesn’t have a scooby and the answer probably isn’t a straight yes or no either!

Madness. Utter madness. People treating this like it’s a full time job.

I’ve just had enough of the pandering to the imaginary sky fairies when it comes to food and that includes any religion, if you want to believe an animal should be killed in a certain way that’s okay but you can’t expect everyone else to agree to their steak being prayed over before slaughter.

BunfightBetty · 09/03/2026 08:01

Quite.

I avoid both, for welfare reasons. I also buy free range eggs and look for higher welfare meat in general. I’m not eschewing battery eggs for racist reasons, any more than I’m avoiding halal and kosher for racist reasons.

Same. If I can't buy free range chicken or eggs I don't buy at all. I try to buy meat from local butcher who can tell you it's source. I never buy imported meat because some countries have lower welfare than UK .
I would like meat to be labelled as halal or kosher whether in a supermarket or restaurant.

This is about islam becoming dominant in the UK.

LOL!!! Hatters and March Hares come to mind.

And yes I am sure your work colleague would really ask “is it Halal” about children not covering their hair. I am sure they did.

Yeah sure.... Bury your head

JHound · 09/03/2026 10:32

People who have an issue with businesses selling halal meat products should just personally boycott them.

Which is what they are doing..... Making a list.

I actually think this poster is being more truthful than most though.

It is about their perception that Islam is becoming dominant in the UK, and no matter how ridiculous their perception is, at least they are being honest enough to admit it, instead of dressing up their objections as faux concern about animal welfare.

It's better if the Islamophobes state their position clearly so that we can at least all see it for what it is.

EasternStandard · 09/03/2026 10:33

JHound · 09/03/2026 10:27

I am fine with people choosing not to eat halal meat but “smear campaigns” and social media campaigns against those that sell it is really just Islamophobia pretending to be about animal rights.

As you can bet not a single one of those “concerned citizens” does similar to businesses that sells meat products from animals that were not ethically reared.

They make some weird “religious takeover” about it but for businesses it’s simply money.

Ok if it makes money due to demand then be clear it’s halal. Consumer opinion will eventually get it changed.

I mean the GB News, reform voting types. The same types who bend over backwards to defend Trump et al and label any criticism of Israel as anti semitism while saying the most horrendous things about Muslims and their religious practices.

The tolerant left!

I agree that there is no issue with food being clearly labelled. Allow consumers the choice and then businesses can see which option is most profitable.

I agree with this. It’s a rare example of honesty.

I have no objections to food being clearly labelled either. On the contrary, I think it would be a good development, but I would like to see a broader system that takes into account the conditions of the animal's life and not just its death. We could perhaps have a ratings system, a bit like we do with food hygiene. Then consumers could make genuinely informed choices about what they eat.

Yep but it can’t just be welfare it has to include religious labels.

I would also like my children not to eat halal at school. Currently all meat in their school is halal. I asked. I was not informed.

I thought this was going to be about the Sikh man I’ve seen on twitter whose restaurant had eggs thrown at it. He’s since had people travelling to visit him specifically.

Doesn't he also have a huge sign on the front window saying WE PROUDLY DONT SERVE HALAL MEAT"

SpringsOnTheWay · 09/03/2026 07:34

I grew up in a Jewish area and there were kosher butchers and restaurants but they were independent ones you could avoid. Halal is a bigger issue to avoid as it is more widespread and more mainstream, with places like five guys, subway, Pizza Hut having halal shops.

The owner/ceo of pizza hut is Muslim.

Interesting as they still serve pork based pizzas and in islam its also a sin to sell/serve/eat pork

I’m veggie.

i don’t think individual businesses should be smeared but equally I think halal and kosher methods of slaughter are cruel and if people knew what they involved and knew they were eating animals killed in that way they would be upset.

Are regular British slaughter houses and abbatoirs a place of harmony and kindness?

Well the same could be said about any boycott but if people feel strongly about a subject, they tend to want to encourage others to join in too.

Maybe the hope is that all supermarkets will be obliged to label all relevant products as halal or kosher so the customer can make better informed choices.

I’m not racist. I don’t want to eat animals that have had their throat cut then been hung upside down to bleed out while still conscious.

It takes 12 minutes for a cow to bleed out while trussed up by its hooves.

There are videos on YouTube from Halal slaughterhouses.

many slaughterhouses now are Muslim owned including the huge Two Sisters one in the North of England.

It should have been less than a minute.
Maybe they didnt do it correctly.
12 minutes is an awfully long time.

Under research, it should even be less than 30 seconds

ScarlettOYara · 09/03/2026 10:53

EasternStandard · 09/03/2026 10:46

It's standard in schools because it's easier just to have one type of meat. Our school canteen only serves Halal meat because our student intake is 52% Muslim.
