To buy my first house two minutes down the street from traveller housing initiative?

Please give me advice.
I’m sale agreed on a new build house in Dublin . I found out that there is a new traveller housing initiative going in right across the road from me. Please don’t say I’m being snobby I’m really not. I’ve just heard stories of anti social behaviour etc. I know there’s always some lovely people but I’m nervous.

Do I give the house up because of this? It’s a substantial amount of houses for the traveller scheme all together - six very large detached four bedroom homes. It is two minutes walk from me. I drove up to the development to see and the traveller housing initiative is not in front of me directly as I thought. It is not in front of or behind me but about 2 minutes walk down the road. I can only see gable end of one of the houses from mine. Not directly facing.
I need to sign contacts in 2 days and I am so torn.
Otherwise it’s perfect house for me. With this information are you saying yes or no?

The end of your post is pretty fascinating too. If you want to berate people for their ignorance why end with threats that pretty much confirm their prejudices are well founded?

OP — regardless of the truth of the matter here (draw your own conclusions) the fact remains a lot of people share this view. So it will be challenging to sell in any event.

Because it doesn’t matter what you say or how you try to argue your case that you don’t do the things you are accused of no one with a prejudice mindset will think any different of you. Go read the ama post. Peoples minds will not be changed because if there is one person out of a hundred that does do the thing they are accused of the rest get tarnished with the same brush anyway. And it’s with this mindset that nothing will change and you will still get those that will disrupt your peace by pulling up nearby because why try and make an impression when your going to be discriminated against anyway.

its because of the trouble people have encountered from travellers. Round here they break into outbuildings and steal heating oil. The police are scared of them too

So we just discriminate a whole community do we. We put a cross on their heads before even clapping eyes on them? I thought I was a cold person but this is another level of ignorance.

What a fascinating thread. I’m a gypsy and was recently posting on ama thread a couple of days ago and had tonnes of posters saying “why don’t you’s just move into a house instead of travelling around” and now to see this thread here begging the op not to buy a house because of travellers near by is quite contradictory. Be honest, you would have us all burned by the stake wouldn’t you? Wiped of the face of the earth. This is the reason why so many travellers and gypsy don’t want to settle in houses. Because we are not wanted end of. So we will continue to pull up in your car parks and playing fields and have yous clean up after us. After all it’s what you all deserve.

I dont think anyone would want you all burned or wiped out. Not at all. Just they want to feel safe and have the same respect for the community as others have that move to the area.

Your community has prejudice against non travellers too.

The concerns raised on this thread are not coming from nothing, sorry but travellers do have higher antisocial problems. The OP situation will make it harder to sell on in future because of statistics.

I use to work near a traveller site, we had an agreement with them that they can take whatever they want from our skips as long as they leave our yard alone. We were very friendly with them and liked them. The moment our site was coming to an end and just 2 of us women left in the office, we kept all the shutters down for our safety. Not because of travellers, but because we are now lone women. We kept the gates open at first for our ease and felt safe. Then 1 day the travellers we had had a previously good relationship with were trying to break into our building. We were terrified. Luckily they didn't manage to get in and we locked the main gates from then on. We thought we had an agreement and they had benefited for years from it. If they had actually asked us when they heard we was leaving, we would have give them all we hadn't sold or kept for ourselves before this point. Another insodence was when there was a funeral for 1 of the travellers, they blocked all the roads for the whole day. No one else would do this. Our buisness couldn't trade that day, if it was 1 of the every day public the police would soon have cleared the blockage but they are scared of dealing with travellers.

If the travelling community respected and worked with us I think they would have very different results.

The problem is it never seems to be a small minority that are behaving so dreadfully. In my part of England there are a lot of traveller sites, the behaviour is awful and the way they treat their animals is disgusting. My son is an electrical engineer, his company were asked to do an inspection of a very large traveller site nearby. He had to have a police escort the entire time as it was so dangerous to even be there. He said there were dozens of chained up, skinny dogs and the whole place was filthy. My daughter has horses and cringes every time the gypsy kids go flying through our village on their horse and traps, whipping the poor starved horses that are so often lame with missing shoes. It is sad that they get a bad name, but round our way it is easy to see why

BT engineers have to go in pairs to our local traveller site for safety reasons.

What we deserve? You forcing your way into public spaces? How about having some sense of decorum? You think leaving all the shit behind for someone else to clean up will foster good relationships and defy the stereotypes? You are actively contributing to the stereotype so how do you ever think doing that repeatedly would help your cause. Don’t act like animals. Pick your shit up after yourselves like every other person. Or do you just like to leave a dirty protest because oh yeah, fuck authority. Vile.

Smilesinthesunshine · 09/03/2026 01:56

Pull out now if you can. Also police raided a large site near us and 49 stolen dogs were found. In another incident a man was killed whilst fishing on his boat on a private lake in our village. Two travellers were angry because he asked them to stop poaching fish. They fired catapults at him and killed him. It's just not worth the potential trouble.

FantasyFoodhall · 09/03/2026 02:16

Don’t do it OP.

Ladypartsproblem · 09/03/2026 02:26

YABU to buy this house. You’re clearly worried and will never relax. How can a home be a home if you don’t feel safe?

Makingadecision · 09/03/2026 02:42

Do not do this

PlayingDevilsAdvocateisinteresting · 09/03/2026 02:49

It is so hard to buy a house - well done at getting to this stage in the process. I would do more research.. Talk to your family, anyone already living in the area, etc.

I would hate to live near troublesome Travellers. Maybe you could sell in a few years if that turns out to be the case? They might be okay?

To me, the biggest worry would be that @MelMar1 wouldn't be able to sell her house in the future, even if this particular traveller community turn our to be model neighbours. Many, many, years of negative stories about people from the traveller community, have led to so many of us being worried about living in close proximity to them. I think this opinion is very sad, but also very understandable.

Therefore, OP, I'm afraid that I have to agree with the majority of PPs, and say no, that is not the right location for you. Unfortunately, you need to back down from this purchase asap, but I very much hope that you will quickly find the right property and location for you. 💐

It sounds like you think the OP would be fine to buy that house then? That’s a valid view, she seems to want reassurance rather than to walk away, why don’t you say that?

Just reading through your posts, it does sound like you genuinely think that the house OP he wants to buy will be fine? That’s a valid view, if you explain it.

Not a chance.

BessieSurtees · 09/03/2026 03:28

If you can take the emotion and excitement out and look at the facts then you will withdraw. The same as the previous buyers did.

It is advertised without this information, the EA denies knowledge of the situation, previous buyers pulled out even though new builds are like gold dust. There's 3 red flags before you even begin to consider the resale and being stuck there forever.

hattie43 · 09/03/2026 03:46

No way would i move there .

MmeWorthington · 09/03/2026 03:49

No.
Because whatever you feel or however well it works out, you’ll find it really hard ever to sell .

Tbf if babylamb is a Romany Gypsy then she isn't from the Irish Traveller community.

Goatsarebest · 09/03/2026 03:54

I on the West Coast of Ireland and we have 3 settled sites in our community. They are all away from housing on the edge of the town at different sides. The families can not live together without fighting, but do attend local schools and are integrated to an extent. There is always serious drama at the sites with feuds and fires and significant fly tipping and unauthorised caravans from visiting family. Dogs running wild and drug dealing. Numerous semi feral children out all hours and bored and skint. Any dealing with the criminality involves the armed response unit just to get on the sites. The kast raid on one site took 8 armed Guards and 12 officers to arrest one person. These are the facts. Anyone that says different doesn't live near them. Don't let people saying you are prejudice for not wanting to live next to these sites. Let them live there if they want.
I wouldn't use my money to live there. Social housing at a push so you could leave at no financial loss, but buying, no way. When you want to sell in 2 years time the only buyers will be the families on the site and they will offer half what you paid, and you'll take it because you will be desperate.
Don't do it.

Gettingbysomehow · 09/03/2026 04:01

Hell no there is a village near here which houses travellers and the non traveller residents are desperate to move but cannot sell their homes. Not a week goes by without endless trouble. I pulled out of buying the cottage of my dreams there because of it.
Funerals are the worst. People come from all over the country to attend and the village is trashed every time. Im in Somerset.

Just to clarify are you talking solely about Travellers or Romany Gypsies as well, since you mentioned both?

Good chance it will be fine. But I wouldn't but a house anywhere there was a risk for reselling it. If it was a moderate flood risk, near a field that could be built in, etc.

This is one of those where it might never effect you but not worth the risk for reselling

There is no chance it will be fine. Those 6 houses will house around 40 kids, 15 to 20 adults, temporary caravans with more children, horses, scrap metal piles, rubbish and attract criminality and drug dealing. I live within 4 miles of 3 traveller sites and worked in Limerick, including Rathkeal, for 20 years.
