To buy my first house two minutes down the street from traveller housing initiative?

Please give me advice.
I’m sale agreed on a new build house in Dublin . I found out that there is a new traveller housing initiative going in right across the road from me. Please don’t say I’m being snobby I’m really not. I’ve just heard stories of anti social behaviour etc. I know there’s always some lovely people but I’m nervous.

Do I give the house up because of this? It’s a substantial amount of houses for the traveller scheme all together - six very large detached four bedroom homes. It is two minutes walk from me. I drove up to the development to see and the traveller housing initiative is not in front of me directly as I thought. It is not in front of or behind me but about 2 minutes walk down the road. I can only see gable end of one of the houses from mine. Not directly facing.
I need to sign contacts in 2 days and I am so torn.
Otherwise it’s perfect house for me. With this information are you saying yes or no?

Don't buy it and I wouldn't believe the estate agent about the previous buyers reason for pulling out either.

We were on a couple of the same threads. Yesterday. You are memorable. 5 dogs living outside and one just had 8 pups that you’re selling for £2.5k each. Memorable

as for a fan? 😀

I think pp's other post was worrying.

But why are you criticising her for selling puppies? Is that necessarily a bad thing to do?

Nowpause · 09/03/2026 09:13

babylamb4 · 09/03/2026 09:11

i get that but when you live with racism and read people being so open about it, its kind of what they deserve.

Also, circus and fair ground people are not travellers. They are showmen. Nothing to do with us.

Bollox fairgrounds have “nothing” to do with Travellers

5 dogs kept outside
one just given birth to 8 pups
Selling for £2.5k

does this sound like a responsible registered breeder to you?

Happyjoe · 09/03/2026 09:14

It's just the resell thing. Even if you end up living next door to a good community of people, when it comes to whenever you wish to move potential buyers will not like it. So personally speaking I'd pull out because of finances. You have to look after your purse,

Hi fan 👋🏼 you’re so caught up in dogs living outside like they are not animals after all. You never heard of working dogs? You might wanna do some research.

Are the puppies outside too? Are they well cared for? Those would be my questions

Adult dogs living outside isn't automatically bad, as long as they have comfy kennels etc

As for the price she's selling the pups for :
£2000 isn't necessarily unheard of if they're an in-demand breed. Take this thread on The doghouse, for one...

Newborn puppies shouldn't be kept outside, ever. You may want to do some research.
Nothing to do with working dogs.

It's a way to make money, end of. Friend of mine rescues cats from a traveller site, the appalling care of kittens and adults is heartbreaking and because nobody gives the cats the snip, the sheer amount of cats is awful.

elliesmummy19 · 09/03/2026 09:22

I wouldn’t, sorry. I live about 4 miles away from a traveller settlement and they cause havoc even when I live (and we’ve quite a bit further away from the homes than you would be).

Actually you’re completely wrong there, @Nowpause . Travelling show people are distinct from Irish and English travellers. See also bargees.

What a fascinating thread. I’m a gypsy and was recently posting on ama thread a couple of days ago and had tonnes of posters saying “why don’t you’s just move into a house instead of travelling around” and now to see this thread here begging the op not to buy a house because of travellers near by is quite contradictory. Be honest, you would have us all burned by the stake wouldn’t you? Wiped of the face of the earth. This is the reason why so many travellers and gypsy don’t want to settle in houses. Because we are not wanted end of. So we will continue to pull up in your car parks and playing fields and have yous clean up after us. After all it’s what you all deserve.

Your last comment says it all, sadly

They may well be “distinct”

But I call bollox that they have “nothing” to do with each other 🤷‍♀️

A sensible non judgmental post for once. @Nowpause doesn’t know how to ask questions nicely, she’s all about making assumptions before knowing the facts. It’s called ignorance.

But since you asked nicely I will answer.

yes mum and pups are kept indoors.
yes they are well looked after and leave for new family’s at 12 weeks old.

They are all sold already at two weeks old because I have people on waiting lists.

peachgreen · 09/03/2026 09:26

Buying on a new build estate is always a massive risk, imo, because you just have no idea what the neighbourhood is going to end up like. So travellers or no travellers, I'd be out.

One question
Are you a registered breeder with the council?

Jlom · 09/03/2026 09:28

The previous buyers probably pulled out for this reason. Buying a house is an enormous investment and this is too much of a risk.

ThatGoldLeader · 09/03/2026 09:28

Do NOT buy the house!! You'll never be able to sell again.

youbizarrehorse · 09/03/2026 09:29

I don’t think it’s worth the risk. Of course there are wonderful people and awful people within the Travelling community, just like any other community and people have good and bad experiences. But this is a new project very close by and nobody knows how it will go. It could be a lovely little enclave of settled families living peacefully or it could be an absolute nightmare. It only takes a small handful of people (men) ‘in charge’ to ruin it for everyone, including the Travellers themselves. It is not racist to be concerned. Many, many people have had terrible interactions with Travellers and it’s frankly insulting to dismiss their experiences as racism.

This makes sense now.

I saw the name and instantly thought 'goady' but I couldn't remember why.

That and a few other threads was the reason.

KaySam · 09/03/2026 09:30

God no,the one near me was raided at least once a month and stolen goods were found every time, like vans and caravans, the crime rate increased and the camp was a disgrace rubbish everywhere, dogs running about, the local park was awful with men shouting at the young local girls.
Its been closed down now by the council and the crime rate has dropped,

id run a mile and drop out of the sale.

Thank you, that's good to hear. As long ad puppies are going to good homes, I don't see what the issue is with having dogs living in the garden or having 5 dogs etc

Penneyanna · 09/03/2026 09:32

I'm in Ireland...DO NOT EVEN DREAM OF IT !!!
Also , bear in mind that if you buy and decide in a year or 2 that you want to sell this house it will be very difficult to sell and it will be seriously devalued because of it's location .
You would be insane to buy this house imo.
