Vinted buyers that never actually buy!

I’m selling a decent backpack on Vinted. I’ve accepted five offers on it this evening and not one of the buyers has come back to actually buy it! What’s the point in even sending an offer if you don’t want to buy it?!

AIBU to message them all and tell them I’ve had other offers and if they don’t buy soon, they won’t be able to?

I often change my mind or find the item cheaper and unfavourite it minutes, hours, days or weeks later. I hate it when sellers send me messages to see if I'm actually going to buy (unless offering a lower price) and will often unfavourite/discount that buyer if they send a message, because it makes me suspicious they're desperate because they're selling a fake/something dodgy. And even if not, I don't need to be chased, if I want to buy something I will!

Whilst I agree with some of what you say and I
also favourite items, and I would never make an offer unless I was serious about buying.

I don’t think it’s suspicious of sellers to accept your offer and then check if you still intend to buy. If you are going around offering to buy things and not following through repeatedly, I would see that as nuisance behaviour and I would block you.

Offers shouldn’t be binding but they are also not a tool for you to use to be a nuisance.

No I only find sellers messaging me suspicious when I've favourited something, I don't find it suspicious if they message me once I've sent an offer - just annoying.

I do only submit offers if I'm serious about buying, just sometimes to a few different sellers if there are lots of the same thing listed. It would never happen often enough that the same seller would see me cropping up more than once, certainly not enough to be a nuisance. I would have thought that as a seller you'd be aware if there were lots of the same item listed at the same price/cheaper, so it wouldn't be surprising to have buyers make offers and not follow through.

Thanks for clarifying.

Not so much as a seller, but as a buyer I do notice when the same item has differing price points - but I just buy from or send an offer to one seller at a time. I wouldn’t offer to buy from them all.

I never message anyone who favourites / offers my items but I also don’t respond to buyers who offer low prices or who message me
complaining about how high my prices are.

So I hope the two things even themselves out.

why like it if you don’t actually want to buy it?

I often like things on Vinted because I want to see whether they sell and if so, what for. Or I’ll like it to keep track of it because I think it’s too expensive right now. Today I bought a jumper for £5 that they put on for £20 in December. I’ve had it on my list all that time because I didn’t want to pay £20 for it. She was unlikely to accept £5 when she had it on for £20, but after 3 months and reducing it to £7 she was happy to accept £5. That’s how buying and selling works on Vinted. You need to be strategic as a buyer and a seller.

pinkpony88 · 08/03/2026 22:37

You can actually put an offer in for a whole house, have it accepted and still not buy it so I wouldn’t get my knickers in a twist about an item of clothing! 😛

I agree you need to be strategic but I do feel bad for the buyers who sell their new items extremely cheaply.

There is a certain amount of exploitation on
Vinted.

Maybe exploitation is not the right word, but I suspect there are sellers who can’t wait for a better price and just accept low offers to get some much needed cash.

Steelworks · 08/03/2026 22:38

Maybe the people haven’t checked their emails or vinted and noticed their offer has been accepted, or even if they did see it, were out at dinner so couldn’t respond. Give them a chance.

WhatDidIDoToBeDealtThisHand · 08/03/2026 22:41

You need to remember OP that a buyer isnt a buyer until they buy! Until they buy the item they are just a window shopper!

Conversely, sellers have to be pretty quick at accepting offers.

When I first started selling on Vinted, I used to sit on offers, only to find that the buyer moved fast and bought from someone else.

So when I get the ping from the Vinted monbile app, I usually respond pretty quickly to accept an offer.

whattheysay · 08/03/2026 22:49

why like it if you don’t actually want to buy it?

Good lord I must have at least 50 things in my favourites! I'd buy them all tomorrow of i could, but can neither afford or store all those things. I see outfits or a style I like the look of somewhere, and then browse Vinted, to see what's out there and at what prices. To see what I could get should an occasion like a black tie dinner, summer holiday, fancy dress party, dinner with friends, anniversary meal, might happen. I enjoy scrolling through vinted to see what's out there, what my algorithm shows me, and then I like stuff while I'm thinking about it or waiting for such an occasion to warrant having the item. Have you never walked in an actual shop and thought 'I really like that coat, but not sure if I can afford it yet', so not bought it? Do you expect the shop assistant to be annoyed with you for browsing, clearly liking something but not actually buying there and then?

I have made an offer on an item several weeks ago, that the seller still hasn't reacted to, so it goes the other way too. I sometimes make an offer on something I'm thinking about to test the waters and sometimes get counter offers I need to think about or still need to think about it even if accepted.

You're being a bit weird and misunderstanding the whole vinted system, I think you need to relax a bit on there! In fact if sellers chase me, the second I've liked something I'm less inclined to buy!

IDontHateRainbows · 08/03/2026 23:19

FancyKeyboard · 08/03/2026 19:39

It's not a commitment, that's the whole point.

On ebay, an offer is a promise to buy if accepted. Vinted is different - which as a seller/buyer you need to understand. I will sometimes offer on more than one thing at once but only have the cash to buy one. Or I'll realise it's not that good a deal after all.

Sure it's annoying. It's happened to me today. But you need to accept it's the rules of the platform.

Ebay processes the offer once accepted, sp it's binding. Very different and much better fir the seller

liveforsummer · 09/03/2026 02:46

On eBay if you send an offer it’s an authorisation to charge your card so it automatically does so if the seller accepts. Try popping it on there instead as you’ve not had any luck. Re liking things. When searching for an item I would like the ones that fit the bill to then compare later to decide which one to buy

MissFancyDay · 09/03/2026 03:07

You shouldn't take it so seriously. It's a fun way of finding new things a a good price. I must have favourites nearly 100 items. I couldn't possibly buy them all. Also some of the items I have for sale have dozens of likes.

Everything that I favourite I would like but I am either waiting for the price to come down because it is overpriced or it is something I would like when I can afford it or several of the same item to watch if the price drops, all sorts of reasons.

If someone sends me a pushy message I ignore it. If someone offers a low offer I decline it. It's silly getting annoyed, it's just how the site works.

Favouriting is not the same as making an offer...

PollyBell · 09/03/2026 05:20

How have the offered have they emailed you? if you only have 1 item how would that work?

This. Dont worry about it. It will sell eventually.

Friendlygingercat · 09/03/2026 05:29

Online buyers in general are getting more flakey and dishonest. I sell vintage on Ebay and at one time customers who buy antiques could be relied upon to be more honest. Not any more.

One buyer said she wanted to return an item. for a spurious reason. She provided a fake tracking # and the item never arrived. The return window closed and Ebay efunded me. Buyer obviously intended to keep the items and get refunded. Welcome to my blocked buyer list!

Next a buyer who put in a "not as described" claim. She sent a picture of what she recieved and it was the same item she ordered. She claimed never to have ordered the item. but in private messages she admitted it was a mistake. I got onto live chat and the agent could see all those messages. He closed the case. I told her she could still return the item (as she clearly ordered it by mistake) but return shipping was on her dime. Heard nothing further. Welcome to my blocked buyer list!

Another buyer wanted to return an item as ordered in error. Without contacting me for international return instructions he posted it back via DHL next day . There were no customs documents with it so it sat at London airport for 4 weeks with the courier being unable to submit it to cutoms. Eventually they sent it back and the sender would have had to pay a fee to DHL. By then the return window had closed and he had an tem he didnt want and no refund Welcome to my blocked buyer list!

Ive been on Ebay since it began so I know most of the tricks and dodges.

Pay attention to when you buy from me or you will end up on my blocked buyer list.

MyCheekyEagle · 09/03/2026 05:36

Another type of "buyers" that are so annoying are the ones who buy your items then don't collect the item! They pay for the postage so a postage label is generated. You post it off, the don't collect & then you have to wait for it to be delivered back to you. What is the point?? The buyer I'm waiting on to collect this time has form for it. She must have lost so much money in paying for postage for nothing. Riduculous.

The buyer won't have lost any money on postage. Once you accept the item as returned to you, the buyer will be refunded the whole amount they paid including any postage.

Oh yes, these are the ones tha annoy me. Also the ones who do collect and don’t press the ‘is everything alright’ button so you can get your money.

Technically under contract law an offer and then acceptance of that offer forms a contract, so really it should be a commitment

It's bloody Vinted where people sell their shorts for £1. You are overthinking and overreacting. I constantly sell/buy things on Vinted and never thought about things like this. At least don't send these "reminding " messages.

purplescissors · 09/03/2026 07:40

You are misunderstanding how Vinted works. Even if you accept an offer, the item still stays available for others to buy, so the item could be sold before they’ve even seen that you’ve accepted the offer.

Vinted has a page which explains how offers work, it clearly says that offers aren’t binding.

I’m another one who has changed settings so sellers can’t contact me if I like an item, as I was fed up of the messages that I got. As you’re browsing, hitting the like button means the items all go into the same place so you can easily find them again and compare. It doesn’t mean you definitely want to buy them.

Someone might make an offer on a few similar items and they buy the one that works out cheapest with postage, which can’t be seen until you click through.

Hohofortherobbers · 09/03/2026 08:28

I had an item reserved first a buyer for 5 days last week, didn't buy, timewaster
