To be appalled at CONVICTED violent criminal Cheryl Cole hosting X-Factor

Samantha1971 · 17/06/2008 13:03

I am appalled that Cheryl Cole (nee Tweedy) a woman who bashed a toilet attendant and was convicted of this is to host/judge on the popular TV show "X-Factor.". My two young girls watch this. What kind of example are we setting for our children? Should we give Garry Glitter a chance to come and host a pop show aimed at a family audience? I don't think so. So why is this allowed to happen? I'm shocked. When I was young, TV presenters where cheerful charismatic people with wholesome lifestyles. My girls are exposed to people like Paris Hilton who is a famous slut and famous for nothing more than sleeping with many different men. My girls have people like Paris Hilton and Cheryl Cole as TV role models. I don't think I'm being unreasonable by saying I think it's time we stopped glorifying these kinds of people.

Read about the new X-Factor judge here and decide whether this person is an appropriate role model for our daughters.

x post herbie

I thought this was going to be about the downward spiral of her weight, which I do think is a bit of an issue role model-wise.

TBH, I had totally forgotten about this incident. If anything, I think it shows people can do stupid things when they're young and turn themselves around.

Other than being v skinny (which obviously isn't her natural weight, because she never was when she started out), I think she's actually quite a good role model. She's worked hard and made a success of her life (they don't have it cushy in these bands), she didn't come from a privileged background, she has committed to a relationship and tried her hardest to make it work (although I wouldn't blame her if she left in the end).

I'm not a particular fan of hers, but I do think people have the right to make mistakes and learn from them.

sagacious · 17/06/2008 13:16

Coooo eeee Sam ?
Are you there there dearie?
Or furiously scribbling all this down?

LazyLinePainterJane · 17/06/2008 13:16

I would say the best thing to do for your children is to not let them watch such awful shite like the X-Factor, then you won't have to worry about them being exposed to such things.

You don't have to watch it. I would be more worried about the sort of empty celebrity lifestyle being promoted by these sorts of shows as "the way to be" for young children. And as such, I do not watch them nor let my children watch them.

wannaBe · 17/06/2008 13:17

and there are a lot more reasons to dislike xfactor than their judges. Like the fact the god awful acts you see in the auditions have got through three auditions before being put forward to be humilliated on national television. But I don't see any journalists making a stand against that?

CountessDracula · 17/06/2008 13:37

what LLPJ said

ScottishMummy · 17/06/2008 13:46

tbh, schleb role model is a dubious concept.there is no substitute for emphasising value of education, good manners, emapthy and kindness towards others. you dont get that on the tv and certainly not dribble like x-factor

i recommend discussing real life good role models eg benefits of hard work, good parents, people with admirable qualities, etc

be your own role model to them. promote your qualities and experiences to your dd

a roile model is not some permatan skinny bint off the telly

do yourself and the girls a favour limit their viewing time of such toxic brain rot

ooooh i think she is gorgeous, ableit too skinny. Yes she perhaps isnt the best role model but who cares, it is a reality TV show. Shazza was hardly pure as the driven snow, and Dani has a murky past i would imagine. Who cares!

bundle · 17/06/2008 13:52

didn't SO piss in someone's suitcase as revenge once?

cheesesarnie · 17/06/2008 13:55

who cares.if you dont like it dont watch it-simple.

first post?

Snaf · 17/06/2008 13:58

Sam, if you're not already a journo you could certainly get a job writing headlines for the Daily Mail.

Am rofling at 'cheerful charismatic people with wholesome lifestyles'. Uh huh. Of course they were, poppet.

pagwatch · 17/06/2008 14:02

good god
are there people outthere who look normal and can stand up and speak and all that who think that one finds role models on X-factor?

I think that if you regard anyone on this craptastic show as a role model then you and your children are already doomed...

have to agree - fab bit of coffee break journalism. Better than erm..doing your job

lou33 · 17/06/2008 14:04

sharon did lots of things according to wikipedia

ceebee74 · 17/06/2008 14:08

Has Cheryl not been through enough this year without her past being raked up? She has done whatever punishment was dished out and moved on!!

Next, you will be saying she is not a good role model because her husband (allegedly) cheated on her and it must have been all her fault!

I think she deserves so much credit for making a success of herself after everything she has been through - must be a hard decision to go on prime-time television when the world knows all the mucky details of your private life.

waffletrees · 17/06/2008 14:15

Does anyone actually give a toss? Parents are the most powerful role model children will ever have not c-list slebs on TV.

If you don't like the "X Factor" just turn it off.

ScottishMummy · 17/06/2008 14:15

oh my heart breaks that the malnourished nylon-heided popstrel has troubles.so do the rest of us, its called real life credit crisis etc

except we are not loaded and paid obscene amounts of money for doing SFA

poor wee cheryl sick of media intrusion, well go away somewhere quiet (not the ivy or London), lie low, dont belly ache to your publicist about your life

simple

stillwaiting · 17/06/2008 14:54

lol at thinking that the X factor is a programme that should be providing a role model for anyone.

at comparing someone who once had a fight in a night club about lollys to a violent sex offender who rapes little girls over and over and over again.

If you 'glorify' tv presenters then something is wrong with your value system.
