What is considered rich these days??

Soccermomsavestheday · 07/03/2026 22:55

So my husband and I live a pretty decent life but not one that warrants being called ‘financially out of touch’ and ‘how the other half live’ in my opinion which is just a couple of example of my sil many comments towards us.

My husband earns around £250k a year, I don’t have to work so don’t. We live in a nice 4 bedroom detached house with a lovely sized wrap around garden. We’re lucky enough to send our children to private school. We don’t go on extravagant holidays or wear high end designer clothes etc. We both drive Range Rovers but one is second hand (5 years old). And bottom line we have worked really hard to be where we are but don’t consider ourselves ‘Rich’ more so comfortable that we can live a modest life without financial restraints

it really bugs me when she says stuff like ‘you wouldn’t know what it’s like to budget’ and ‘it’s alright for some’ etc. I do budget monthly and am very much aware of how much things costs etc

Am I being unreasonable in this situation?

Being self made and having no help to get there does not mean you’re not rich, OP. But I think you know that. You’ve mentioned all of your privileges without being asked about them.

So you:

  • drive nice cars
  • spend presumably £60k~ on school fees
  • dont have to work
  • own a nice house

and you think you’re not well off?

Please get some perspective. I assume if you did grow up working class, as you claim, this won’t be difficult.

I mean clearly this thread is fake but 'rich but thick' still made me laugh. 🤣

Do people really fall for this goady bullshit?! 🎣 1/10

I suppose I don’t know if I’m being unreasonable to be offended by her comments. She says something everytime we see her and it’s in a negative way. I wouldn’t dream of being so rude to her but thought maybe I’m being sensitive

Perhaps you are a bit.
Look at the responses you've got here after you've outlined your husband's salary, nice house with "wrap around" garden, children in private schools etc
Presumably your SiL comes from the same working class background as your husband and hasn't been able to "work her way up the ladder".
Unless there's a major drip feed coming it doesn't sound like she's saying anything that awful.

365RubyRed · 07/03/2026 23:21

Why don’t you have a job if you’re as hard working as you claim? You are wealthy, that’s obvious, but I don’t understand the need to brag about it. You must realise there are hard working people educated to graduate level and beyond, earning significantly less than your husband, and consequently struggling to pay the bills, living from payday to payday.

I've genuinely met several people like the OP in real life. Whilst this thread may indeed be bullshit these people do indeed exist.

get to fuck ya wrong un

randomchap · 07/03/2026 23:23

He earns 8 times the UK average wage

You're rich. If you don't feel rich then that's because you're being foolish with money

I was giving the background
I don’t live in a mansion and have extravagant holidays etc. Why would I claim I’m working class if I wasn’t? What would I gain from this?

You’re not rich. You’re richer than your SIL. Her comments are unjust. Unless it’s z250 after tax I’m sat here wondering how you afford private school TBH.

Is this a joke?

OneBreezyHelper · 07/03/2026 23:26

When people are one redundancy away from being unable to pay the mortgage and the bills, I don't call them "rich".

You are much better off than many people, and a lot worst off than others.

But on MN, anyone earning more than £30k is considered "filthy rich"

"My husband earns around £250k a year..."

We both drive range rovers... "but one is second hand".

"We don't go on extravagent holidays or wear high end designer clothes" (so where do you go and what do you wear? Guaranteed it isn't staycations and Primark)...

What a way to boast how well off you are and how hard you work. Bully for you.

Yes you are out of touch. Yes you are being unreasonable. Yes you have no idea how the half (90%) live.

SplodgeWaddler · 07/03/2026 23:27

You might be rich but you drive Range Rovers. Unless you're famous or a member of the royal family, that really is a bit naff.

we live in the south west so costs are cheaper than London. I pay around £7,500 a term per child. It’s easily done on our income.

Don't you mean your husband pays 😂

Eudaimonia11 · 07/03/2026 23:30

If you’re having to budget on £250k a year, you’re definitely “thick as shit” as Mickey Flanagan would say. I’d be living the life of Riley with a third of that!

AgnesMcDoo · 07/03/2026 23:31

To most people you are rich

If you're easily paying for private school then you're rich

Obviously

I'm surprised you can't figure this out

I manage all the finances plus we’re a team and don’t consider things that way. It’s all ‘ours’

🤔

Statsquestion1 · 07/03/2026 23:33

I mean we earn 140ish between us, we do budget everything , save 2.5k per month, have over nearly 200k savings and more shares etc, we have 5 bed house (albeit not detached) I wanted a new build so opted for a semi. I couldn’t care less about a garden tbh.
i don’t send my dc to private school- there are none in my area. I consider us well off/comfortable…so yes you are more than comfortable.
i mean that is unless you don’t save at all or something?!!…

would you?

If you kept your exact lifestyle but use the difference for a holiday or 2 a year, possibly. But when people work their bums off, they don't really want to live that sensibly, what's the point.

If you were upgrading your lifestyle proportionally, you would just live. Comfortably, but not "footballer" lifestyle
