Dogs in hotels

SlouchyBeanie · 07/03/2026 19:51

Staying in a chain hotel. Just seen two lots of dogs being taken to stay in a room. One lot was 2 spaniels, the other was a sausage dog and a bigger one I can't identify. I mean, what the fuck!?? I'm allergic to dogs and how do I know if there's been one in my room? Easy, I feel a bit unwell. Am I completely alone in thinking dogs have no business being in hotels and their owners are shit owners to imagine their dogs would enjoy this sort of experience. As I type, a third one has arrived, a terrier looking thing. I'm totally gobsmacked at the number of dogs in this hotel and find it unacceptable. I feel quite fired up about this at the moment, probably made worse by the barking and yapping I can hear. So am I being unreasonable that dogs should not be allowed in hotels?

The hotel should provide a dog cage outside.

Outside where? In the car park? 😂

The issue is that people that take their dogs to hotel rooms seem to find it impossible to understand that some of us are not keen on that and resort to calling us 'dog haters' and 'psychopaths'.

I just don't know why you can't let people be different to you without the self defensive insulting of people you don't know.

It's just ultra rude.

I do, but thanks for your kind permission.

I’d personally be far more grossed out by sitting on the London Underground than staying in a hotel room that’s had a dog in it at some stage. Germs galore there.

Germs don't bother me. It's the fleas and the smell that's all. Dogs have a particular smell that I think some of us find quite pungent and lingering. I don't think dog owners can smell it to be honest.

Go. To. A. Dog. Free. Hotel.

It's not hard, ffs. Do that, and no one needs to even think about you. much less call you names because you'll have no reason to be all over the interwebs complaining about Spanish people in Spain dogs in dog-friendly hotels as if we dog owners are the issue.

We do not take our dogs to dog-free hotels.

There's absolutely no need for dogs to stay in hotels. They're animals, if you have to take them with you somewhere they can stay in the car overnight with a window cracked open, it won't kill them.
I recently went on a city break, was about to book a really nice independent hotel when I read the bit of the website that said they were dog friendly. So the chain hotel that did not allow dogs got my business instead.

Which is fair enough.

The dog friendly place would get my business because I wouldn’t leave my dogs in a car overnight.

Both of us get the service we require, and both hotels get business.

I do go to dog free hotels. There just are not very many any more so it's hard to find somewhere.

No, it's not. Where do you want to go, and I'll find you somewhere?

Unfortunately a hotel won't survive on your dog custom alone.

Actually you might have solved a mystery for me. I have cause to travel regularly, staying at Premier Inns around 40 nights a year. Last couple of years I've been finding them fully booked, in advance, when in the past that's 'never' happened. So I now find myself surrounded by dogs in a dog friendly chain hotel because all the premier inns in a 15 mile radius are fully booked. Hmmm. Plus there was also room available at the Travelodges which I try to avoid when poss.It doesn't take Einstein to figure this out. PI def know which side their bread is buttered.

WHERE did you see anyone telling people they MUST go to dog-friendly hotels exactly?

impossible to understand that some of us are not keen on that
No, what people can't understand is why you would dislike or not want to be in a dog-friendly room BUT book one.

Because it makes absolutely no sense.

If you are not keen on children, you don't book a holiday in a "family resort" and then complain. There are enough adult only options. Same thing.

The Lake District.

Also - I don't have a lot of money so it needs to be a reasonable (average to low) price.

There honestly are masses of hotels out there that don’t allow dogs, as I’ve said I know from sometimes struggling to find anywhere that DOES allow dogs.

It's because they don't understand people who have different opinions. They have to defend by attacking

Here’s one I found straightaway. Google is amazing. What’s your budget? If that’s too much I’ll find some cheaper options.

That's way too expensive I'm afraid. I can't afford boutique/luxury hotels. I need average to low price accommodation.

It's amazing you find it so easy - when I google 'pet-free' I just get a list of 'pet freindly' places.

Seriouslynonono · 08/03/2026 00:50

Sorry that's way too expensive.

£70 - 90 per night is my usual budget.

Thanks though.

I'm begining to think the issue is the Lakes is out of your budget, and I get that. My annual trip to Majorca is cheaper, but seriously, DD's boyfriend lives in Cumbria, so if you actually need somwhere send me what you need and I'll forward it to him.

He was amazed Bowness was so dog-friendly, so I am guessing it is not the norm outside of massive tourist traps.

Seriouslynonono · 08/03/2026 01:00

Thank you that's very kind.

I do go every year but the prices are going up and up so I'm looking at 110-120 per night for this year by the looks of it.

Despite having stayed in many hotels for over 30 years, at least 40 nights a year, I have never, until today, come across one dog let alone the 5 I saw today in a hotel chain I don't usually use, admittedly. I was really very surprised and a little shocked that they let dogs sleep in the rooms. For people chastising me for booking a room in a dog friendly hotel and then complaining . . .I had no idea any dogs other than service dogs were allowed in hotel bedrooms. I didn't knowingly book a dog friendly hotel. I can't imagine how it's become acceptable but now I know it has, I won't make the same mistake again.

Dogs won't get out of the car if they're not in the middle of a field. Why would they? They're dogs living a healthy active doggy life. Why would they want to be in a hotel? They'd be totally perplexed. They sleep in the car regularly when they're out working and their owners are camping/fishing/shooting. Nope. I just can't imagine them being holed up on the 3rd floor in some hotel. But there's the difference I think. People don't really treat dogs like dogs any more. And it's a shame for the dogs. They don't live a natural life.

What??? I have very well trained working dogs who are also very much loved family pets. In the field they do as they’re told about leaving or staying in the car. At home they do as they’re told about being on furniture - sometimes they’re allowed and sometimes they’re not. When I take them to dog friendly accommodation they have their beds and blankets with them and sleep where they’re told to. I would never, ever leave them in a car overnight, they’re as much part of my family as any human member is (and a damn sight more useful and obedient than some of them too) and they’ll always be treated as such

It’s true that the mention of the word dog does seem to bring up pet friendly hotels, but searching for ‘Lake District hotels no dogs allowed’ also brought up a lot of TripAdvisor and Reddit threads with heaps of suggestions from others who have found options that would suit you.
