Dogs in hotels

SlouchyBeanie · 07/03/2026 19:51

Staying in a chain hotel. Just seen two lots of dogs being taken to stay in a room. One lot was 2 spaniels, the other was a sausage dog and a bigger one I can't identify. I mean, what the fuck!?? I'm allergic to dogs and how do I know if there's been one in my room? Easy, I feel a bit unwell. Am I completely alone in thinking dogs have no business being in hotels and their owners are shit owners to imagine their dogs would enjoy this sort of experience. As I type, a third one has arrived, a terrier looking thing. I'm totally gobsmacked at the number of dogs in this hotel and find it unacceptable. I feel quite fired up about this at the moment, probably made worse by the barking and yapping I can hear. So am I being unreasonable that dogs should not be allowed in hotels?

Can I just ask. How many of you are including assistance dogs in your ban?

The problem is the assistance scheme has been totally abused
the world and his wife can get an assistance harness from Amazon and put it on the family dog
which makes a lot of people cynical if some of the assistance dogs are genuine

I generally avoid anywhere dog-friendly, as I have allergies. It can be a bit of a pain but it is - for now - still doable, there are some hotels/cottages/ restaurants which don’t allow dogs. If and when that’s no longer the case, I’ll be buying a camper van 😎

You're going to absolutely love how dog friendly most campsites are.

Seriouslynonono · 07/03/2026 23:58

@HelloVoid You groom dogs, hence you work with owners who take extra special care of their dogs.

Many owners do not take this extra special care of their dogs and therefore many dogs frequently have fleas.

Edited

Do you think that owners who don't take extra special care of their dogs would go to the trouble and expense (you pay extra for a dog) of taking their pet to a hotel with them?

RobinInTheCrabApple · 08/03/2026 10:20

When you stay in dog friendly accommodation you pay a dog charge. In TravelLodge it's £20 per stay and I've paid up to £40 extra in holiday cottages.

I'd always assumed this was because they do an extra thorough deep clean when you leave so perhaps rooms are even cleaner after a dog has been in.

If not it's the establishment's fault, not the dog owner who's paid for the service.

Seriouslynonono · 08/03/2026 00:32

I do go to dog free hotels. There just are not very many any more so it's hard to find somewhere.

Edited

The OP herself has said she stays in lots of different hotels 40 nights a year and this occasion is the first time she's ever seen dogs one.

It's obviously not hard to find somewhere dog free.

You DO realise that a) assistance dogs could have been in any room of any hotel? And b) we don’t travel with our pets to give them “a hotel experience” (although mine would LOVE it) and c) pet friendly rooms are limited where offered/available so just ask for one that isn’t?

Laughing a bit about the hill some posters replying are willing to die on for this. May that always be the max magnitude of your problems.

Christ on a bike - the level of shit people are willing to mistrust. I have NEVER heard - or thought - that an assistance dog would be a fake.
Life’s stressful enough without seeing more nonissues everywhere. You must be exhausted!

It is.

It's already been established on this thread that you want dog free, reasonably priced accommodation in the Lake District.

Premier Inn has 7 hotels in the Lake District. You said that's too expensive for you.
I travel a lot and it's very hard these days to find anything cheaper than Premier Inns.

Just a quick look and I was inundated with various dog free options.

If you can't find something it's your budget causing problems, not pets.

Niece bosses son in type one diabetic there family dog had one of these assistance harness’s so they can take it everywhere the son is also 19 so rarely with them anywhere
it’s had no training as an assistance dog

so perhaps that’s what’s made me cynical because I have first hand experience
I wish I had your optimism and faith in society

Tigercrane · 08/03/2026 10:48

There are plenty of dog free hotels and holiday lets.Probably you can find dog haters hotels if you google it.
I always find it hard to find places that allow dogs to stay!

presumably the dogs will be outside though, not inside my space where they would impact my ability to breathe.

Reading some of these comments, it’s a bit disturbing how some posters seem to find other people’s medical issues funny or a cause for criticism…

Because nothing is worse than dog smell. Esp wet dog. And I have worked in a hospital for 30 years, and smelt nearly every revolting human smell possible!

Wet dog smell is one of my favourite smells!

But I adore dogs, all of them.

Not you @Strumpetpumpet because I take your point entirely and apologise, but the hateful way some people talk about dogs and their owners on MN creates an adversarial environment.

So many people banging way about there being no dog free accommodation at all when even the OP tells us there is.

It's pretty mean how people suggest people's beloved pets should be ' left overnight in cars with the window cracked' or 'in cages'. So many 'dogs not treated like dogs', 'dog owners are psychopaths', 'Dog owners not looking after their dogs properly'.

So many people without dogs but with strong opinons about the proper care of dogs that would frankly make responsible dog owners recoil.

Honestly, if people talked like this in real life there would be fist fights on every street corner.

Dogs aren't allowed in most camp site shower blocks or shops so I'm sure you'll find them suitable for your health conditions. Happy holidays.

I don't want a cottage. I want a b and b or a small inexpensive hotels - these are all 'dogs welcome' unfortunately.

It's not my budget - it's the lack of availability because most reasonably priced places have gone dog friendly in the last 3 years since everyone got a dog during covid.

Seriouslynonono · 08/03/2026 10:33

At your budget, I'd say many hotels are out of reach, dog free or not, sadly. It's dear to stay on a hotel these days.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 08/03/2026 11:37

I have dog allergies and want a dog free holiday cottage in Uk but there was one on a search I did earlier today. We are being excluded from society.

You're not being excluded from anything. Like anyone else with an allergy, or disability, you just need to do your research as to whether dogs are allowed before you book.

Premier Lodge would work for you then. I made a mistake earlier when I said there were 7 in the Lake District. There are 10. Rooms start at about £50 a night.

Just looked at their Kendal branch. 4 nights, late April - £388 B&B. No dogs in rooms or restaurant.

Where do you want to stay? Let us know and the power of MN can find you somewhere.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 08/03/2026 11:48

Next time just check whether the hotel allows dogs.

Easy enough, FFS - what is wrong with some people? Or do they just enjoy having something to moan about?

Weird. When I specify dog friendly when looking for cottages, loads disappear from the search. 🤷‍♀️
