Dogs in hotels

SlouchyBeanie · 07/03/2026 19:51

Staying in a chain hotel. Just seen two lots of dogs being taken to stay in a room. One lot was 2 spaniels, the other was a sausage dog and a bigger one I can't identify. I mean, what the fuck!?? I'm allergic to dogs and how do I know if there's been one in my room? Easy, I feel a bit unwell. Am I completely alone in thinking dogs have no business being in hotels and their owners are shit owners to imagine their dogs would enjoy this sort of experience. As I type, a third one has arrived, a terrier looking thing. I'm totally gobsmacked at the number of dogs in this hotel and find it unacceptable. I feel quite fired up about this at the moment, probably made worse by the barking and yapping I can hear. So am I being unreasonable that dogs should not be allowed in hotels?

Other dogs do have fleas.

Many dogs do have fleas.

That's why you need treatment - to protect your dog from all the fleas on many dogs that your dog will encounter on every walk.

Most dogs and cats don’t have fleas. They’re largely carried by wildlife these days.

Seriouslynonono · 07/03/2026 23:58

@HelloVoid You groom dogs, hence you work with owners who take extra special care of their dogs.

Many owners do not take this extra special care of their dogs and therefore many dogs frequently have fleas.

Seriouslynonono · 07/03/2026 23:58

Cats get fleas very frequently.

They don't care.

I really, really don't.

And that is not because I don't understand allergies. I'm allergic to cats/grass pollen/dust/donkeys/rodents/birds/paint fumes/perfumes, and more. I consider it to be a me issue. I would never expect the world to bend to my particular needs. I am not a narcissist.

I also don't believe that dog free business are hard to find. Dog friendly business are still sometimes hard to find in cities and towns.

I wouldn’t say that at all, the number of dogs that were many months overdue and badly matted that came in was pretty high, so I wouldn’t call that special care. There were owners who got their dogs groomed every 6 weeks like clockwork, those who brought their shedding dog in for a deshed once or twice a year, smelly farm dogs plastered in cow shit…it certainly wasn’t all pampered poodles.

They don’t need “special care”. Flea treatment is a three monthly tablet.

Seriouslynonono · 08/03/2026 00:07

@HelloVoid If you saw just one dog with fleas per year then that could be a hotel hosting 1 dog with fleas per year in a room that many people will stay in, in the following days/weeks and possibly get bitten by fleas.

1 flea ridden dog per year in a hotel is one too many.

I take my non-dog custom elsewhere thanks.
Clearly many people are doing the same.

There's no need for humans to stay in hotels either - maybe you should sleep in your car with the window cracked open instead.

We need to stop humanising dogs there animals it’s beyond ridiculous to see them as a like for like comparison with people

. . . which many people don't bother with.

We are not a nation of animal lovers. The amount of animals in boarding are evidence of this. People get an animal then don't bother looking after it.
It's an epidemic in England. Animal charities are running on fumes due to the neglect of dogs in this country.

And most do. 🤷‍♀️

just...don't have one?

What is it to you how people treat their pet? As long as they are not abusing them and the pets are happy and healthy, who the hell cares?

You can't be jealous of a dog, can you?!

Yeah, that was my original point. Dog people can go to dog friendly hotels, dog haters can go to non dog friendly hotels. It’s not that deep.

Yeah, see that's where I made my mistake. I genuinely did not know that 'any' hotel would house a dog. Now I know different i'll be more selective and check every single time. Perhaps if enough of us do it they'll come to their senses.

I don't hate dogs.

I just think they smell terrible and I don't want to get bitten by fleas. Therefore I don't want to eat my breakfast within the whiff of one, or sleep in a room where one may have left fleas.

It's not much to ask.

I wouldn't sleep in a cow shed either but I very much like cows.

They won’t. They’ll be quite happy for you to go to your dog free hotel and keep making money from those of us who want to take our dogs.

Unfortunately a hotel won't survive on your dog custom alone.

That’s great, just go to a hotel that doesn’t allow dogs then. Easy.

But there’s a shit ton of people out there who couldn’t give a shiny shite that dogs may have been in hotel rooms. People who may have dogs at home but are away for work etc. So it’s not just people that have dogs in tow. Most travelodges I’ve stayed in have loads of work vans in the car park, it’s often the default option for contractors to stay there. For those that are repulsed by dogs in hotel rooms, there will be just as many who really don’t care and just want to get their head down for the night.

The hotel should provide a dog cage outside.

5foot5 · 08/03/2026 00:25

I don't own a dog and don't especially want to share a restaurant or hotel space with other people's dogs, though if they are well behaved it wouldn't bother me that much.

However, I think if the hotel/restaurant owner has decided they will be dog friendly and advertise as such then that is fair enough. I have the option of not going if I want to guarantee a dog free space. I have relatives with a dog who have stayed in nice country hotels that market themselves as dog friendly. That seems perfectly fine to me. The hotel owners have decided what their market is and customers can decide for themselves.

I have twice stayed in hotels that had many cats and made a bit of a thing of it. The cats would wander around the lounge and could even be tempted in to your room if you wanted to pet them. I am more a cat person than a dog person so thought that was lovely. I know it wouldn't be for everyone but they made it clear it was a hotel feature so you make your choice.

You do you.

I do, but thanks for your kind permission.

I’d personally be far more grossed out by sitting on the London Underground than staying in a hotel room that’s had a dog in it at some stage. Germs galore there.
