Dogs in hotels

SlouchyBeanie · 07/03/2026 19:51

Staying in a chain hotel. Just seen two lots of dogs being taken to stay in a room. One lot was 2 spaniels, the other was a sausage dog and a bigger one I can't identify. I mean, what the fuck!?? I'm allergic to dogs and how do I know if there's been one in my room? Easy, I feel a bit unwell. Am I completely alone in thinking dogs have no business being in hotels and their owners are shit owners to imagine their dogs would enjoy this sort of experience. As I type, a third one has arrived, a terrier looking thing. I'm totally gobsmacked at the number of dogs in this hotel and find it unacceptable. I feel quite fired up about this at the moment, probably made worse by the barking and yapping I can hear. So am I being unreasonable that dogs should not be allowed in hotels?

Agreed. I used to travel a lot with my terrier for work reasons and often had to stay outside of/on the outskirts of town because dog-friendly, central places were not easy to find.

We almost never found anywhere we could eat out unless we were deep in the countryside.

And now it’s flipped the other way round and those of us who have no choice but to avoid dogs (or risk an asthma attack/eczema flare etc) find ourselves having difficulty finding somewhere. Except people have choice to take their dogs or not - it’s not actually necessary to take dogs everywhere (obv with the relatively rare exception of assistance dogs). So I guess you might have some insight into how we feel.

Yes, I always stay in Premier Inns if possible and have never encountered a dog there. I was surprised to find quite so many in the HIE so it took me aback. But now I know so I won't make that mistake again. I stay in different hotels around 40 nights a year and have never seen a dog. Most people are sensible. I'll be more picky with hotels in future.

There you go, problem solved 😊.

Premier Inn is your answer, personally I’m sad they don’t allow dogs as their beds are the comfiest beds ever. But good I guess for the dog haters out there. I do have a Premier Inn mattress on my bed so I get to sleep there every night…with the dogs 🐕

The poster above competes in sports where her dogs are needed. I travelled for CPD courses/seminars in canine behaviour and welfare, so my dog kinda was essential.

Erm. What?

You should not have booked a dog friendly hotel.

I didn't know dogs are allowed in any hotel. I've never stayed in a hotel where dogs are allowed in the rooms. I thought no dogs was the norm. Now I've learned differently I can make sure it doesn't happen again.

Yes attending competitions without the dogs would be a bit pointless (although perhaps I’d have more success 😂).

Your dog trumps human health needs, got it.

out of curiosity, what difference does it make to you, if a dog sleeps in a hotel bed, as opposed to some unwashed stinky hairy drunk who just stuffed themselves with a pungent curry, or a group of people having wild unprotected sex in that very bed?

fleas

Just go to a non dog friendly hotel? There’s loads to choose from, I have the opposite problem when finding ones that are dog friendly, and a lot of them aren’t.

Something for everyone, as they say.

fleas

Responsible dog owners treat their dogs regularly with flea treatment. Very few dogs have fleas these days.

How many times have you caught fleas from staying in a hotel? Aside from the fact that humans can’t actually catch fleas.

My ability to feed and house my children did trump humans who were too dense to book a dog-free hotel when I travelled with my dog for work purposes.

My desire to have my baby chihuahua travel with me also trumps humans who are too dense to book dog free accomadation.

I consider it to be Darwinism in action.

The humans won’t set off an asthma attack just from having been present in the room the previous night. HTH.

Seriouslynonono · 07/03/2026 23:48

Dog fleas definitely bite humans

then it makes 0 difference if the dog sleeps on the bed or on the carpet if the mere present starts an asthma attack.

Maybe book a room that doesn't allow dogs? HTH.

And again we’re back to the point that dog-free is actually difficult to come by these days, just as dog-friendly used to be for you before the country went dog-crazy. Why should we only ever be able to use Premier Inn? If only it were as simple as you suppose.

It only takes 1 flea jumping off 1 dog and laying eggs in the hotel carpet to cause a flea infestation.

Anti flea treatment = no fleas. My dogs have never had fleas.

Other dogs do have fleas.

Many dogs do have fleas.

That's why you need treatment - to protect your dog from all the fleas on many dogs that your dog will encounter on every walk.

HelloVoid · 07/03/2026 23:56

I worked in a dog grooming salon for 3 years and groomed literally thousands of dogs. In that time I recall perhaps 3 that had live fleas. It really isn’t the case that all dogs are wandering around riddled with fleas waiting to drop onto hotel carpets.

If you insist on booking a room that's unsuitable for your needs, and you blame others for using it the way it was designed to be used

then no, frankly I don't care much.

If you have a nut allergy and complain that you suffer after a Nutella tasting event, I won't care much either.
