To find "Mrs" in a work email signature a bit cringe

Just that really, is this a new thing or I'm just noticing it more nowadays that some female colleagues have Mrs first name last name on their email signatures where the norm is just names + job title etc. I've never seen a male colleague's email signature be "Mr X" and i'd find that equally odd to be honest. Unless it's a professional title like Dr or Professor AIBU to think putting your personal title in an email signature a bit cringe ?

For me insisting on Mrs is extremely cringeworthy. It's like making sure everyone knows that one of the things you define yourself by is 'a man chose me'. In the schools I worked with women were always just 'Miss'.

The last time I saw it in a signature in a professional context was a boss in a small company who thought using Mrs made people take her more seriously. She also put BSc Hons in her sign off. She also didn't like women to wear trousers in the workplace. We did wonder if she had somehow transported in time from the 1950s.

I can't imagine why someone feels declaring their marital status is relevant to their job and, frankly, would probably take them less seriously for doing so.

It's really not

but you do you 😂

MetroCas · 07/03/2026 11:40

I’ve never seen this before and I deal with hundreds of emails every week.

That said, if someone did it, I wouldn’t give it a second thought.

BestBefore2000 · 07/03/2026 11:53

Would a man ever sign off with Mr...?

I spent a lot of my time as a former teacher having to explain to my students that yes I am married but no, I am not a Mrs. A lot of them assumed an automatic title change which is of course absolute nonsense.

pouletvous · 07/03/2026 17:50

Only if the name is not gender specific

CalmTheFuckDownMargaret · 07/03/2026 18:02

I reckon it’s to avoid she / her nonsense.

independentfriend · 07/03/2026 18:12

The assumption the reader will make is to use Ms if the writer doesn't otherwise specify so think it's good people include the title they prefer. I work in a field where it can be necessary to address some documents by title and surname so knowing which title someone actually uses is helpful.

BestBefore2000 · 07/03/2026 18:18

@independentfriend Providing it's not automatically addressed to Mrs because I'm married then all good 👍

helloitsmehello · 07/03/2026 18:22

I do this... It's to do with "sex" and nothing to do with being married.

I work for an international company and some countries see my name as as extension of very similar male names...

BestBefore2000 · 07/03/2026 18:27

@helloitsmehello So why not use Ms then? If it's purely about specifying you're a woman?

GoldenCupsatHarvestTime · 07/03/2026 18:28

I use Mrs when I complain to companies. For some reason I’m treated much more politely when I do. I always think because they assume I’m a little old lady and not an annoying millenial.

Mrscv2 · 07/03/2026 18:37

I do this as I teach and email students but do try and take it off if I’m emailing colleagues or elsewhere as I think it’s a bit odd!

BestBefore2000 · 07/03/2026 18:38

Life would be so mucb easier if it was just Mr for men and Ms for women!

Partypants83 · 07/03/2026 18:45

yes me too. Why on earth would you put your marital status on anything?

BeddysMum · 07/03/2026 18:52

Do they have a masculine or unisex first name? That might make sense if people mistake them for a man. 😂

I haven't seen that before on email signatures. It's a bit old fashioned.

TiredShadows · 07/03/2026 19:02

I have a handful colleagues who do this, mostly women 55+ who have worked there for 20+ years and are very particular on manners/"how things used to be", but there are a couple older men who put their title on everything as well. One of them has a habit that I've never seen elsewhere, where when she lists people's names, she writes their titles after, often just Surname Title.

I don't really view it as 'cringe'/embarrassing/awkward, I presume it's something important to them or just a habit. I mean, a few of our computer systems still display everyone as Title First Name Last Name (Job Title and/or Department) so even if it's not in our emails, it shows up elsewhere in the work day.

I don't include any title in signatures. I do include in brackets how to pronounce my first name, because that's important to me. It's not uncommon when people read my first name that they'll mistake it for a similar English name.

LoyalMember · 07/03/2026 19:04

I wouldn't give a f#ck.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 06/03/2026 15:49

I dunno why but I find it weird 😄. Millennial women are doing this

Like, okay you're married 🙄🙄, why do we all need to know. It conjures up the image of them trying to seem more respectable

No. We’re not trying to be more “respectful” we are just very happy, and very proud of being our husbands wives.
honestly not sure why this is such an issue to people 😂

IfyouStealMySunshine · 07/03/2026 19:16

@Blades2but that’s why. It’s lovely that you’re proud to be married to your husband but why does anyone need to know in a work capacity?

If no one else uses their titles it’s like adding in to every interaction ‘and by the way I’m married’. Just irrelevant.

Get A Load Of This Guy GIF

I've nothing against you personally xx - but for the purposes of this thread:

LoyalMember · 07/03/2026 19:22

It reminds me of those daft bints, particularly in the US, but you get them here, who proclaim 'I've got a boyfriend.. ' anytime a guy so much as looks in their direction or exchanges the time of day with them...😆

Season 6 Ugh GIF by Parks and Recreation

And the men who do the same, but in Britain

Think 'banter lad' who you've asked to help you get something off of a high shelf in asda

Calm down man, I'm just hungry 🙄

BestBefore2000 · 07/03/2026 19:33

Even the phrase "our husbands' wives" smacks of ownership to me. Nobody owns me, and that includes my husband!
Do you honestly think men are asking for a title which suggests marital status because they are "proud to be our wives' husbands?"
Nope.
