I need a fresh start - does your village have a train station and a school? That's all I need - tell me where in the uk you are, what you love about it and if I can buy a luxurious private not overlooked house there?! 😃

YABU - this does not exist
YANBU - tell me where!!

Zillions of villages do, and you might find it handy to have a post office not too far away!

InflagranteDelicto · 05/03/2026 21:31

Yes, but it's also blighted by HS2 and the local housebuilding. We're at risk of being swallowed by the nearby town.

My DC used bus /train to get to secondary school depending which school they went to.

Luckily we're also near a hospital with an A&E, occasionally used by DC or DHL!

bowrow · 05/03/2026 21:36

tell me where these places are? Although maybe not if blighted. I know they exist, that's why I'm asking where they are.
Good thought about the post office @YourWinter , a shop would also be very useful.

What's your budget for the house?

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 05/03/2026 21:39

A friend moved to Walton on the Hill in Surrey. You could certainly buy a luxurious private not overlooked house of your budget is ££££ but for a more modest budget not a chance.

Melrose, Balloch (overrun with tourists in the summer) and way up north, Brora all tick the general brief in Scotland.

Do you have a budget? A need to be near certain places by train? Need for fast broadband etc?

ReignOfError · 05/03/2026 21:42

Edited for broken links.

North Berwick, train to Edinburgh, on the coast.

HolyFocacciaa · 05/03/2026 21:42

I grew up in St Bees, Cumbria

Wowzel · 05/03/2026 21:43

I always liked Bosham and Emsworth.

tealandteal · 05/03/2026 21:46

I live in a village with a train station, we walk to school and house prices are cheap. It’s is rural Devon though and everything else is quite far away. I love it but it’s not for everyone!

Duffield is a nice village (I am not a village person but it's a good one if you must). It has two primary schools and a very highly rated secondary school, plus a station (trains south to Derby and north to Matlock) and lots of small shops. Also a frequent bus to Derby. Tho tbf why not just live in Derby. Or Sheffield.

What’s your budget @bowrow? A three-bed semi in Duffers if you can find one is about £400k; a four-bed detached about £500k upwards. I did mention the school, yes?

Other villages on the same line but not as nice include Cromford (pretty but under-resourced), Ambergate, Whatstandwell. Belper is nice but it's not a village. Towards Sheffield you could go for Dronfield, or into the Peaks you could live in Edale or Hope. I wouldn't tho. Duffield is the best shout locally tbh.

this sounds nice. There's a couple of places that come up like this, could I stand being far from everything else, if I had everything at my doorstep. what's the village? are there many Devon train station village primary schools?

im in a village with a train station five minutes away and on a commuter line into London. We have two schools a primary and secondary and it’s lovely here

exLtEveDallas · 05/03/2026 21:53

I live in a village with a train station, a post office and corner shop, a hairdresser, a primary school and two pubs.

This is close by, but I think it's as ugly as fuck! https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/171540341#/?channel=RES_BUY

There are much nicer houses in the village, cheaper, but not as secluded. I love where I live.

Check out this 4 bedroom detached bungalow for sale on Rightmove

The village I grew up in in Yorkshire has a train station and a nice school. I reckon you could buy the whole village for a million though, might not be a ‘naice’ as you’re looking for Grin

Here you go. You can be in Oxford one way in 8 minutes, or the Cotswolds the other way https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/172743299

that's a pretty impressive view. I like the idea of Oxford and the cotswolds, sounds really nice

I live in a fabulous village, with lovely independent shops, pubs and restaurants. We have primary schools and a prep school. The local secondary school has coaches to ferry the children (it's only 10 minutes away). We're on the train line and only 15 minutes from the West Coast Mainline. Crime is low, community spirit is high. The roads are utterly terrible because of the pot-holes but that's the trade-off for being in a rural county. I feel as though I love in the best place in the world!

Midnights68 · 05/03/2026 22:01

How about east Suffolk? Melton/Woodbridge sort of area? Near the coast, train links, just about commutable to London. Lovely countryside and coastline.

Not sure about prices round there but cheaper than Surrey for sure.

Kingham in the Cotswolds also has a station on a direct line to London, and a primary school. Not sure what the secondary school options are.
