Pillow, pillows, PILLOWS!

Am I being unreasonable in that I can never find the perfect pillow!

Even when I sleep somewhere, and look at the exact pillow, and buy the same thing, it never seems to be the same, so I’m asking for help, can anyone hit me with your perfect pillow suggestions?

… and yes, I understand they are individual! But I’m looking for something that’s plump but soft, and keeps it shape.

Also, does anybody else really struggle to get the perfect pillow?

Pillows are uncooperative bastards, @TheBeaTgoeson1. One night they will arrange themselves in the perfect way under your head - completely comfortable, absolutely right - and the next night, you have the same pillows, and you arrange them exactly the same way, but it’s like trying to sleep on a bag full of spanner’s.

They are sentient, mischievous and cruel.

Memory foam. Get thee to a John Lewis and lie your head upon £60-£100 pillows. You'll look like a weirdo trying them out but it's so worth it. I take mine on holiday with me.

Pillows i’ve tried and returned: Tempur Cloud, Panda Bamboo, a latex pillow, something from John Lewis that was shredded, a cervical neck pillow from M&S , a Woolroom pillow, several feather and down styles and a few bog standard synthetic ones. I realised I don’t like soft but also don’t like memory foam style, they all felt like bricks even the Tempur.

I’ve finally settled on this, just one is perfect:

The first week I was genuinely too overstimulated by how comfortable they were that I struggled to sleep! 🤣

My spare room is full of discarded pillows in the hunt for one which relieves my shoulder and neck pain (another perimenopausal side sleeper).
Didn't rate the cervical one I tried - I find memory foam too firm.
My current attempt is a wool filled pillow. It has adjustable filling and wool is naturally temperature regulating. So far so good (although only 2 nights in). Am now considering a wool duvet in an attempt to tackle the night sweats!

I can’t get on with wool pillows but wool duvets are brilliant for night sweats, really help.

Too many choices!

I’ve always been a feathers and down person but considering wool next as I love my wool mattress from John Lewis as cool in summer and warm in winter

Alix52 · 07/03/2026 23:17

These are great, soft but supportive. No more painful neck

As I lay awake, again, a couple of nights ago, I fantasised about opening a shop where you can try pillows before you buy them..about inventing a machine like the mattress ones, but for pillows, which measure your pressure points and preferred firmness levels and prints out a record of your pillow matches! Why is it so difficult? I've been struggling with pillows for years! Spent so much money! Conversely, my OH could sleep on a week-old folded naan bread and thinks I'm being a princess.

Impoverished soulmate checking in here after years of extensive, expensive, research.

I'm a mostly side-sleeper with often severe neck and shoulder pain.

I don't like it, but do often have to drop to one pillow and that can help.

I've tried every kind, feathers, feather and down, pure down, man made options and wool. The best I've found is quite widely available from Amazon and other retailers. Martian Dreams brand, various filling options and you adjust the amount yourself. Excellent quality, reasonable prices and very good customer service to ensure satisfaction, including sending out extra filling material free of charge.

I have no link to the company, but have bought several for our house and also for family too.

Has anyone tried a Groove pillow? Honestly, a game changer

Ihavetogotoday · 25/03/2026 07:57

I was also going to say Groove, great but then after a couple of weeks I have to change to something else.

I have a crazy rotation of 6 pillow's, groove (and dunelms brand, rubbish), feather, synthetic on and on.

Bought wool ones from the wool room, god they were truly awful, lumpy and bumpy could not get any sleep with them at all.

Like many sent a small fortune on pillow's trying to find the holy grail. Sad my years old very very worn feather ones from Fenwick had to be thrown away, they were perfect.
