Am I being unreasonable in that I can never find the perfect pillow!

Even when I sleep somewhere, and look at the exact pillow, and buy the same thing, it never seems to be the same, so I’m asking for help, can anyone hit me with your perfect pillow suggestions?

… and yes, I understand they are individual! But I’m looking for something that’s plump but soft, and keeps it shape.

Also, does anybody else really struggle to get the perfect pillow?

@GrateWay I was coming onto the thread to tell everyone how completely fantastic my buckwheat pillow is. I can’t recommend it highly enough. I travelled in Japan last year and they are very common there. The buckwheat adjusts so you can get the pillow support just right. It’s fantastic. I had constant neck and shoulder issues and this pillow has stopped that completely!

I bought some shredded memory foam filled pillows which are soft yet keep their shape, might be worth a go?

I second the Shredded memory foam. I got mine from John Lewis after testing out many, many pillows in the shop.

I get migraines from neck pain after side sleeping and this has been very helpful.

Hate regular memory foam, feels like I'm being suffocated, but the shredded ones are really good.

I have been on a hunt for my perfect pillow for a least 10 years. I have spent a fortune o. Pillows which just aren’t right. Memory foam, wool, removable inserts, cervical pillow, sprung pillow, squishmallow pillow, water pillow. I get very bad neck pain which radiates to my shoulders and often turns into a migraine. I’m still searching…

I also have this neck pain which turns into a migraine. I found shredded memory foam to be the best pillow. It's more adaptable than the solid memory foam somehow - I find solid memory foam gives me a headache too.

I think they are called cluster pillows. Mine came from John Lewis, but you can get them in lots of places. It has really helped the neck pain and migraines.

Another one with a tempur cloud pillow. It feels like a sack of sand (and just as heavy) but I really wouldn't be without it now.

I bought it about 4.5 years ago when I had a horrendous frozen shoulder and stiff neck. It took a few nights to get used to it I can't even begin to tell you what a difference it's made. And now dh has bought one after trying mine out.

They're a bit of an investment , but it's basically cost me 5p per night so far. A small price to pay in my book.

I have these too @JoanThursday. my friend gave me two when her mum went into a home. They were practically new as her mum, then her hadn't liked them so she just gave them to me!! I have a Tempur mattress already and love memory foam.
the combination of two pillows and the mattress has meant I never ever get neck, shoulder or back pain. I feel like I'm sleeping on a cloud!!!

TeenagersAngst · 06/03/2026 06:59

Your mattress in combination with your pillow holds the key to a perfect night’s sleep.

I am using the same pillow as before but since upgrading to a Tempur mattress, am sleeping so much better.

Electricsausages · 06/03/2026 07:08

IKEA memory foam is the only thing I can sleep on, slightly smaller than a normal pillow but I just put a safety pin on the cover to stop it slipping

PerkySnail · 06/03/2026 07:30

I have a tempur cloud pillow. Had it since 2020. Absolutely love it.

LancashireButterPie · 06/03/2026 07:53

Are you sure it's just the pillow to blame?
What is your mattress like?
The best pillow in the world won't cure a bad mattress.
Go to dreams, they let you try out the different pillow/mattress combinations there. I found a combo that cured my decade long back and neck pain and they were so helpful.

Rubberduck01 · 06/03/2026 07:57

I have wool filled pillows I bought from the Woolroom. You can adjust the filling to personal by adding or removing the filling.

Biffsboys · 06/03/2026 08:04

ultraloft pillows from Mitre Linen online . Found them in an hotel years ago and have used them ever since .

Could you please share you pillow? My shoulder has started freezing and I can't sleep the way my other, previously frozen, shoulder prefers at the moment so they are both aching 😔

Cervical Pillow for Neck Pain Relief, Hollow Design Odorless Memory Foam Pillows with Cooling Case, Adjustable Orthopedic Bed Pillow for Sleeping, Support for Side Back Sleepers
Brand: MESALAY

this is the pillow. Depending on whether you want a side or back sleeper position you can turn it round to accommodate both. It's quite firm, And I wish it was a little less long from front to back, but it has helped a lot. Hope your shoulder improves, it is such a miserable condition 💐

StarCourt · 06/03/2026 09:49

@101trees yep I’ve tried shredded memory foam too

WheretheFishesareFrightening · 06/03/2026 10:23

This was me. Until I bought the Simba hybrid pillow with an extra bag of filling cubes. You can fill to your required level and it’s a really comfy pillow that gives both support and that sink in feeling.

I used to swear by a dunlopillo but they changed them! I'm now using a Sainsbury's one which is similar but it needs replacing and I'm terrified I spend as much as I did last time trying to hunt down an early 2000s dunlopillo🤣

Dunlopillo is perfect for me too so I'm not happy to read that they're no longer the same.
I've had mine for a while and it's still good as new but it's a worry for future replacement.

Oneof1183 · 06/03/2026 12:11

After suffering from neck pain for years i was recommended the Dorma Tencel blend memory foam pillow from Dunelm and it has been an absolute game changer, perfect alignment of head and back now means i don’t suffer from a stiff neck anymore and they are very reasonably priced too

Panda - absolutely the best pillows. Your body does not want a soft pillow. Keep in mind it’s a combination of mattress and pillow - matching a pillow you’ve used elsewhere won’t be the same if the mattress is different.

I used to wake up with pillows rammed into the headboard so completely flat at the front and absolutely no support - periodically got neck issues. Found Panda pillows at Costco 10 years ago and cannot sleep without it now. Solid and supportive, doesn’t change shape overnight.

Quidco Panda pillows for me too (ir crom Amazon), threw out all other pillows in the house. They somehow manage the soft but supportive/keep shape brief. I'm a side sleeper.

EdgarAllanPoesMirror · 06/03/2026 14:26

I would love to find a comfy pillow. What I would NOT recommend is Elviros Cervical Memory Foam Pillow for Neck Pain Orthopedic Neck Pillow for Shoulder Pain Ergonomic Head Neck Support Pillow for Side/Back/Stomach Sleepers.
It promises supreme comfort, but it is soooo uncomfortable to sleep on.

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 05/03/2026 20:27

Thank you so much everyone!! So many pillows to look at and think about, I wish there was a way of having one for a month, and then returning it if you didn’t like it, and then I’d probably justify spending more on one.

I have an Emma hybrid pillow. It has several different pillows in it and you can have as many or few as you like. I have had it a couple of years and it hasn't gone flat. You can try it for 30 days too and return it if no good!

Smallwins · 05/03/2026 19:40

Cervical pillows all the way here! I tried one a year ago after multiple neck pains/frozen shoulders and haven't looked back. They look ridiculous but are so comfy but supportive. I had to add a thin firm pillow under it for side sleeping to accommodate my broad shoulders.
Amazon have plenty on the around 30-40 range and the two I've tried (one for home and one for campervan) are both spot on

Edited

Do you have a link to the one(s) you have @Smallwins please? Just recovering from an excruciating shoulder/neck issue that I blame my evil pillow for!

One thing I do know ,its a bloody expensive quest.
Watching with interest.

Agreed. It's like trying to find a good foundation cream. I wonder if there's a business where pillows could be hired for a night, and samples of foundation sold, for a small fee.

I struggle so hard with pillows! I pick one up, think 'ooh, that's nice and soft', get it home and it turns into 'stuffed with gravel' in the middle of the night. I was on here yesterday wondering if there were any facilities for 'trying before you buy' because I need at least several hours sleeping on a pillow to know whether it's comfortable.

The discards end up as dog beds. So far I've only found the Premier Inn pillows that are any good (tried feather, memory foam etc etc and - gravel, all of them).

Greenwriter76 · 06/03/2026 17:03

My lifelong search too!

Best I’ve had have been an Ikea feather one which lasted decades (!) and is now being used for my daughter (not firm
enough for me now) and the most expensive pillow I’ve bought, my current Tempur Cloud (the firmer one as I need that, but you can get soft if that’s your preference).

BlueYazoo · 07/03/2026 18:56

I stayed in a Hilton DoubleTree hotel recently and oh my gosh I had the best nights sleep ever. Have been researching pillows ever since. AI has advised this is due to a double chamber so recommended a few to look at. Ended up buying one from Scooms and I have been sleeping like a log although I will say I have slept so soundly that I have woken up with neck pain once or twice. Weighing everything up though, I’d rather have the sleep!

I swear by these and all our guests always comment on how nice our pillows are!
We have a superking bed and they do a superking size which has changed my life 😂

I bought these and sent them back, they were like pancakes
