Tired of carrying my evening outfit in a bag under my desk!

I’ve just looked at my wardrobe and realised and realised I only really wear each dress for one type of event. One for a wedding, one for a 'smart' lunch, one for a black-tie event.

I can’t wear the wedding one to work (sleeves are too 'extra'), and I can't wear the work ones to a party (too boring). Does anyone else have a wardrobe full of 'one-hit wonders'? What is the one thing you'd change about your 'best' dress to actually make it wearable for your normal life?

For me, it’s always the length or the sleeves—it's either too short for a meeting, too long for a night out, or sleeves are to covered for a cocktail dress or not enough.

I have a little black dress which can be dressed up or down - tailored jacket for a meeting, chucky jewellery and boots for the night out and heels and "posh" jewellery for something more formal.

EmpressaurusKitty · 05/03/2026 15:38

This all sounds very technical.

Do you have events with strict dress codes that often? There was a similar recent thread where the OP talked about the Dress Code Challenge or something like that, and interacting with clothes, but it got deleted - which was a shame because I was about to post a photo of my cat interacting with my jumpers.

I mean... you could still post it now? Please? It was my birthday on Thursday and I missed it because I was moving house the next day, if that gives my request some emotional heft?!

MidnightPatrol · 05/03/2026 15:43

Magazines in the 90s said you just needed to add a chunky necklace and heels to transform any day-to-night look.

FusionChefGeoff · 05/03/2026 15:51

A dress or jumpsuit with a light jumper or cardigan is often quite easy to then dress up

Two pics in that case. Happy belated birthday @Arlanymor!

I'm a bit confused how many black tie events, and - more particularly - weddings you are going to straight from work, that you need to keep an outfit in a bag under your desk. Confused

EmpressaurusKitty · 05/03/2026 15:56

I wonder if the OP also has to keep a battery powered iron in her desk.

Ineffable23 · 05/03/2026 15:57

I have a dress that's black, with a full skirt and covered in bright coloured painted fruit. It gets comments almost everywhere I go. I can alter it with a jacket Vs a jumper Vs a bolero type cardigan Vs a velvet evening jacket type thing, and with boots Vs converse Vs heels and with/without a fifties type petticoat. Between that lot I have worn it for evening drinks, a wedding, work, going on holiday, and a formal dinner.

(Edited to add: it's sleeveless but with shoulders and with a below the knee skirt length.)

GORGEOUS! Thanks so much for the wishes and the pics - what a cutie! You have made my day!

Edited to add: and if we need advice on day to night wear.. well your lovely tabby cat has it down pat right?! Perfect attire in any situation. What a gorgeous floof!

FrankSinatraonToast · 05/03/2026 16:07

I love watching the fashion segments on QVC especqilly when Ruth Langsford is on, flogging shoes for £100+ and hunbabe denim jackets or beige trousers and always wait for that comment "It can be dressed up or down". Can it really though? Or is that just a myth?

Kitty says thank you!

And yes - nobody dresses better than a cat.

Yes! I was just coming to say the same 😂

minipie · 05/03/2026 18:10

There’s been a few “how do I do day to evening” threads recently which makes me a bit suspicious someone is advertising or launching a business.

Pleased to see the MN nest of vipers turning it into a thread about cats.

Friendlygingercat · 05/03/2026 18:15

You can never go wrong with stripes.

Yes I've noticed that, it's a bit weird

The occasional carefully chosen accessory can help.

I can’t imagine wanting to wear the same thing to work and a wedding! Or even to a night out. Different clothes for different kinds of situation is really normal and part of the fun.

MissingSockDetective · 05/03/2026 18:35

Why are these outfits under your desk? I must be more tired than I though as I do not understand that.
