We were away with my cousin, her husband and her young kids. Two weeks in Florida. One week in a hotel, one week in a holiday home.

When we got to the air BnB it was very much needed after being crammed in a hotel room. It became very apparent however that the walls were paper thin. We heard everything from the open plan kitchen and diner.

The first time it happened dh and I jokingly said sounds like you had a good night. Just to acknowledge we could hear and give the hint to adjust behaviour. They were mortified. But did they stop? No. It was absolutely ridiculous. It’s not like we could hear screaming just the thud sound as the house was very flimsy even by American standards

AIBU in thinking cousin and her husband were being really inconsiderate. I think they’re trying to conceive baby number 4! I just wouldn’t have carried on if it were me.

It’s completely normal to not want to hear your cousin having sex. It’s not unreasonable to expect them to keep the noise down and be respectful of being in a shared space. Their sex life doesn’t take precedence over others being able to relax and enjoy their holiday. It’s not disproportionate or prudish it’s about respect and normal social awareness.

Nobody says they WANT to hear it but sometimes shit happens and you have to get over it. They’re not doing anything wrong and they are being quiet. They’re OP’s weirdness about hearing a headboard doesn’t override their desire to have sex/conceive a child

BrownSharpie · 05/03/2026 07:52

You’re acting like they’d set up a sex swing in the kitchen whilst you were eating your cornflakes. They are a couple in their bed, in a holiday rental they paid for. What’s the issue? Couple’s have sex, so what?

If you can’t handle the sounds of every day life, book your own private accommodation in future.

Do your wait for your neighbours to leave for work before you have sex?

canisquaeso · 05/03/2026 07:54

YANBU, plus they had options. There’s no requirement to stay in the bed.

WhatsConfusingYouIsTheNatureOfMyGame · 05/03/2026 07:56

There isn't a chance in hell I'd stop having sex around my fertile period when TTC because thudding was audible. YABU and ridiculous.

50sFun · 05/03/2026 07:56

I would have been much more direct and the second time, i would have made my feelings very clear.

Yep they are married but a bit of consideration would have made the holiday more enjoyable for all of you, not just them.

I wouldn't go away with them again.

Unlikely she can hear her neighbours shagging !

BlackCat14 · 05/03/2026 07:58

You say you could hear everything from the open plan kitchen and diner. So presumably not your own bedroom, it’s not like you were trying to have quiet time and trying to chill or go to sleep and you were kept awake by them. You could hear the from the kitchen. Just turn the radio up and crack on with your day.

Flamingojune · 05/03/2026 08:01

They can shag quietly. Selfish and performative

Ponoka7 · 05/03/2026 08:04

There's loads of positions that wouldn't have made a noise, they could have had a quickie over the bathroom sink if they are ttc. So I agree with you that they could have been more discreet.

diddl · 05/03/2026 08:17

If you could hear the thudding then likely they could.

Odd to mention it to them.

doplphindebra · 05/03/2026 08:19

Oh come on, YABU. They are allowed to have sex on holiday and its not like they were screaming wildly and moaning at the top of their voices deliberately.

Yes, it's unfortunate the walls are so thin but a bit of a thud is hardly the same as them screaming dirty talk out loud is it, is this making you concerned about your own sex life?

BunnyLake · 05/03/2026 08:19

I hate hearing people have sex. Surprised so many people don’t mind hearing it.

BustyLaRoux · 05/03/2026 08:21

I think it’s nice when people have sex! Not in a creepy way. In a “good for you!” way.

Yeah the first time is shit happens. But once they’d been made aware, it’s weird and inconsiderate to do it again. No one’s telling them not to have sex, just that there’s no need to include the whole house!
They’ve got 3 kids already surely they’ve mastered the art of quiet sex by now or the kids are probably fed up of hearing them too. If the bed is the problem then get off the bed and get creative.

Iocanepowder · 05/03/2026 08:23

Not their fault the bed is noisy.

The real issue here is you feeling the need to mention it to them.

I mean, there are lots of things I dont particularly relish hearing - the builders next door, someone mowing their lawn, kids screeching but ultimately thats what comes of living near others and unless they are being deliberately unreasonable like playing ear shattering techno music every night at 3am thats just life.

If you want complete silence or not to be around any noise then dont share an air BnB with anyone and go somewhere remote 🤷‍♀️

Op says it was just the thud of the bed though. Hardly hardcore porn they were hearing.

user1492809438 · 05/03/2026 08:26

Round of applause at the crucial point?

Denim4ever · 05/03/2026 08:27

I can't help but wonder why you told them you could hear them.

Quine0nline · 05/03/2026 08:29

Velumental · 04/03/2026 21:59

A married couple had reasonably quiet sex in the holiday home they paid to sue? Not something I could get upset about. You couldnt have coordinated? Taking each other kids out for a couple of hours to allow each of you some couple time?

Coordinated? They go "oooh", you go "ahhhhh"

Ooohh. Aah, Ooh aaaah. ooooh Ahhhhh.

MayaPinion · 05/03/2026 08:30

Just put the radio on - or a bit of Barry White if you want to spice things up a bit 😁

Screamingabdabz · 05/03/2026 08:31

It’s not about a married couple ‘being allowed’ to have sex on their holiday, it’s the inconsiderate nature in which they are inflicting their performance on other people. There is nothing worse than hearing other people having sex - it’s fucking vile. If they wanted that level of shagging they shouldn’t have booked communal accommodation.

YANBU.

GelfBride · 05/03/2026 08:32

Driftingawaynow · 05/03/2026 00:09

Misread this as they can have sex on their anal holiday, which would seem reasonable

Presumably if they are hoping for a baby, taking a holiday from anal is a good thing.

It's just sex. Not armageddon. That's next week.

Sparkletastic · 05/03/2026 08:38

Somewhat prudish of you OP.

BunnyLake · 05/03/2026 08:42

Iocanepowder · 05/03/2026 08:24

I don’t want to hear rhythmic headboard banging either 😁
