What was that???

a few hours ago I get a knock on the door. It’s a young white woman in bathrobe, slippers and a towel on her head.

Says she is my upstairs neighbour. I don’t open door, ask how can I help

says she is here to pick up her parcel and shows a photo of parcel

i reply “we never got a parcel, we don’t have it”

she says “what do you mean?? I have proof. I have a photo!!!! Give it to me now!”

I again say we don’t have it.

she starts raising her voice “open the door right now! You stole it didn’t you! I will not leave till you open this door!!”

I tell her once again, “miss, we don’t have it. Please leave”

she says I AM CALLING THE POLICE!!!

I hear her in corridor get her phone out and say “hello yes police? I’d like to report a stolen parcel. Yes. Yes. Yes. Flat 5. Yes. Yes. this short white blonde woman and a white brunette middle aged overweight woman. And this white middle aged big tall guy with glasses. They sound Eastern European. They have 2 kids, one teenager living with them, family of 5. They all live in this flat. They need to be punished! Yes. Ok thank you! Thank you!

she then says “POLICE WILL BE HERE ANY MINUTE”

I am very shocked and confused and annoyed and my mum who was there rolls her eyes.

half an hour later, police haven’t arrived but son comes home.

i tell him what happened. Ask him if he knows anything about a parcel. He says “wait what flat she said she from?” what she look like?”

he then says a black older woman lives there with her teen sons. Says he knows her son.

he goes upstairs, asks if they or someone in their family/relatives/friends were looking for a parcel. They have no idea what he is talking about, they never ordered anything, and they don’t know a young white lady.

what the hell???

was this some kind of prank?

So glad I live in my lovely sane neighbourhood.

Scammers can pop up anywhere. Next door was widowed in October. Twice since then she's had scammers over her roof, chimney. Luckily the first time DH intervened he observed one deliberately do some damage. He saw them off. A month later another van pulled up tried to pull the same stunt DH intervened again. They said they were just passing. We're at the bottom of a hill and the bottom of a cul de sac.

DH has a theory that they follow the obituary in the paper.

Seems to be a regular occurrence on here.....

AdoraBell · 04/03/2026 22:37

Sounds like a scam. Keep a record of this and if she/someone returns to demand the non existent parcel.

LivingwithHopenowandforever · 05/03/2026 00:34

OP, your home is being targeted, this is not a coincidence. First get a Ring Doorbell installed ASAP. Secondly report to the Police. You do not know if these people are targeting vulnerable people as well and the Police may already be aware of these scammers. Everyone needs to be super careful opening their door to anyone these days.

I have a very incredible dog who insists on always opening the door with me & if he doesn’t like the look of someone trust me his demeanour shows that person that they need to run fast. He wont bark or growl you can just tell because he goes from I’m watching you to the werewolf in milli seconds. That’s why the kids are always told if you are opening the front door the door bouncer goes with you!

Now every delivery driver has met him and they now understand the correct protocol they have to follow……do not bang on the door use the doorbell because if you don’t you have already pissed him off and put him in a bad mood before the door has even been opened. My dog loves the quiet and anybody who ruins it will know about it. Once he gave me the dirtiest side eye ever all day just because I put music on in the kitchen whilst I was cooking and he was asleep. Back to the protocol, the parcel is to be placed on the step in front of the door and he/she must step back. You do not put your arm out for anything only we can if we have to sign. Last of all do not look at him! He sees that as being challenged 🤦🏼‍♀️ all the drivers love him apart from a couple who stay at the top of the drive. One good thing I don’t see anyone stupid enough to even think to enter 😂

RightOnTheEdge · 05/03/2026 00:36

Have you got a ring doorbell? Maybe you should get one, or a cheap CCTV camera. It might put them off or you could record them if it keeps happening.

Cherryicecreamx · 05/03/2026 00:40

I find this really alarming. Don't trust anyone so insistent that you have to open your door! I can just imagine she is the front and there's actually other people hiding around the corner.
As someone else said, I would make reports aware to the police - and get a camera! Hopefully deters them away, but you can also collect evidence if needs be.

Friendlygingercat · 05/03/2026 01:39

The worst is what happened to me at another house. Two guys dressed as workmen said they were from "the gas" and needed to come in to check as a leak had been reported. I didnt believe them and called the police. It was a scam. That resulted in my taking my name off the public electoral role so there is just a gap at my address. You cannot see how many people live here.

Be very wary of people saying they are a utility worker (checking for leaks or water pressure), social services or the council. If I bother to answer the door at all I tell them they will have to write on letterhead requesting an interview and there will be a £50 fee for my services. If people call offering to do my drive/roof/etc I tell them its a rented house and the LL has their own team of tradesmen. its a sure fire way to be rid of cowboy workpeople without risking a lot of abuse. Last week there was a group of workpeople in an unmarked scruffy van washing roofs. I dont know what they were charging or whether they did a good job as I didnt answer the door when they knocked. I just saw them on doorbell camera.

Seriously, who keeps 20,000 in cash in their house?!

temperedolive · 05/03/2026 03:02

ApolloandDaphne · 04/03/2026 18:59

How would that scam work?

OP lets her into the house to search fpr the parcel and see it's not there. She either cases the home for future robbery or demands the value of the parcel before she will leave. Or both.

Would you come up with something way more interesting twice without mentioning the other two times? 🙂

NoFiller · 05/03/2026 03:59

It’s very strange that this has happened.

It’s very strange that this has happened twice.

It’s very strange that the second time it happened you forgot that the first time it had happened you had already checked that this person wasn’t your neighbour and your son had to remind you again.

It’s very strange that you explained the whole story in detail without mentioning in your opening post that the exact thing had also happened a couple of weeks ago.

Did you even read my posts???

what do you mean

“It’s very strange that the second time it happened you forgot that the first time it had happened you had already checked that this person wasn’t your neighbour and your son had to remind you again.”

have you ever considered some people live in big buildings? Or have more than one upstairs neighbour?

I live on ground floor in a big building.

these two women named different flat numbers.

the first time was one flat number, I checked, different person lived there

now this second time my son tells he knows the person in that flat second woman claimed and we ask them, they confirm they never sent anyone.

“It’s very strange that this has happened”

Well yeah people tend to post strange or odd or bizarre or huge or weird things that happen to them online. Over regular mundane events. Usually because they need advice because they don’t know how to deal with them themselves. Or don’t have friends who know much about it so they post it online in case someone knows. The trending thread is full of them everyday. They don’t usually tend to post regular everyday things like

“omg my neighbour just smiled at me!” Or “my husband says I make the best lasagne“ or “my co worker is having a baby!” in fact I seen people say so? Why are you posting this when someone did

and reading online now quite a few people including on this thread said this happened to them, it’s some kind of doorstep scam. So not that “very strange”

it’s more likely on an online forum you’d find people posting strange things than everyday regular things

“It’s very strange that you explained the whole story in detail without mentioning in your opening post that the exact thing had also happened a couple of weeks ago.”

comments like yours is why I didn’t.

you didn’t even bother reading my posts but you run in accusing me.

i didn’t because it would of made it longer and people don’t bother reading long threads or don’t read them carefully. I left out some other stuff this woman said too to keep this as short as possible. I was saving the first time it happened in update

And Ironically I also thought of leaving it out because I was worried it sounded too crazy and people will think I’m making stuff up

I genuinely don’t see it

I said age and gender too. Simply describing

if you think I’m making white people look bad because that lady was white, well I’m a white myself. And if you think I’m making black people look bad? How? They are victims too some crazy scammer is impersonating their flat

i mentioned race to describe how shocking it was to see black people come out when I expected a white woman. (She was very convincing) just like last time this happened I was shocked to see a young man and not a posh elderly lady come out

OP posts:
Nessiesfoodprovider · 05/03/2026 05:35

They're trying to get into your flat to steal things. It's probably because you're on the ground floor and possibly they think there are only females living there?
Get yourself a ring doorbell or similar, and if it happens again then phone the non-emergency police number and report. Chances are they're doing this to different people every day.
