He think this will all soon blow over

Reasons for going there, it's not too far to fly, the sea is nice and warm, and the beach nice, nice standard of hotels and restaurants

Yet ANOTHER Dubai-bashing thread! This is getting silly. How many of you people who are full of criticism have actually been there or are you just repeating stories you have read on social media? We are in our 60s, have visited Dubai several times and we love it - we are obviously not influencers or party-goers or anything vaguely newsworthy but love it for the gorgeous hotels, great food, great weather, interesting history and yes - shopping! Did you know that women hold most of the wealth in the ME - they are dripping in gold under those abayas!

And why so much outrage that their culture frowns on people kissing and hugging in public? Surely you can go a few hours without clinging to and kissing your partner? They do turn a blind eye to unmarried couples sharing hotel rooms now so there is plenty of time for all that once back at the hotel. At least you don't see drunk young women staggering down the road in clothes which leave nothing to the imagination!

I am very sad to see the damage and destruction which has been inflicted on Dubai and Bahrain - another lovely place to visit.

It's far more than kissing in public. How are women treated in that country? What's their life like? What's the Govts record on human rights?
Oh women are dripping in gold are they? That makes it better doesn't it?

Have you ever read properly how women are treated in the Middle East or do you just park all of that because you like sunshine and shopping malls?

You're entitled to have as many holidays as you like and go where you want to go - but it's fine for people to have opposing views

Confuserr · 02/03/2026 01:55

You should go somewhere better and closer like the south of France or Palma in majorca.

Horrible taste in holidays, no interest in human rights or geopolitics... but I guess you can't knock the optimism 😂

This really really angers me. Dubai is a city built by & run by slaves. The human rights abuses are well documented & no secret.

Your hotel is spotless, your spa is fab, your food is delicious. And the people making all that happen have no employment rights, may have had their passport removed so they are stuck in Dubai, goodness knows what they are being paid, love in shanty towns and people want to holiday there?!!

I would never want anyone to get hurt obviously, but the people stuck in Dubai right now are experiencing a fraction of the stress experienced by those workers every single day of the lives.

the7Vabo · 02/03/2026 11:01

Besafeeatcake · 02/03/2026 10:42

So you are fine supporting a country that actively, willingly and knowingly has slave labour?

With so many other beautiful places to go in the world to visit such a horrible plastic place that actively encourages slavery is beyond that pale.

There isn’t anything nice about it. And no I don’t think people who travel there have a conscience nor care about other people who are actively abused.

I don’t care about their laws - countries can have the laws they want and as a tourist you should obey them.

If you go to Dubai you are either deliberately turning a blind eye to what happens to the workers, or you just really don’t care.

And the it’s “fashionable” to bash Dubai. Since when it is fashionable to care about human rights? Human rights are not fashionable now, nor will they ever be. Because too many people just don’t care.

SatsumaDog · 02/03/2026 11:04

I would probably encourage him look at alternatives for this year op. It may be fine, but it’s a big risk to take if you don’t need to.

Some people do lots of mental gymnastics to try and justify their view that women are treated well in the middle East because they like Dubai holidays

I remember a Scottish politician - fairly well known writing a blog saying that she could still be a feminist and care about women's rights and holiday in Dubai and that going to Dubai on holiday was empowering

A load of tosh and she knew it

ChattyCatty25 · 02/03/2026 11:25

YANBU, go to the Canary Islands, it’s still warm in winter (like our summer) and you can hopefully avoid war, terrorism, funding slavery etc. Edited to add, it’s half the plane time and a lot cheaper, too.

It’s very naive to think this will all blow over, the world is being pushed into ever greater instability, and if it’s not this particular war it will be something else.

Why would anyone want to visit a mall in the desert where immigrants from poorer countries are treated like slaves?!

You do realise that the vast majority of the immigrant workers (mostly from India and Pakistan) CHOOSE to go there for work, so that they can send money home to their families?

SereneOtter · 02/03/2026 12:03

He is an idiot. You won't be able to get travel insurance for one thing as insurers don't insure for places that the FCO advises against travelling to.

Wait to see if the situation changes and then book a holiday would be the intelligent thing to do.

And the labour market in these places are undergoing massive reform and improvements.

Do probably don't realise that many of these migrant workers are uneducated, and consequently do not understand the full implications of thier future situation..confiscated passport, (occasional) physical abuse, withheld wages, unsanitary / cramped living conditions. But then again it was their choice right??

Oh bless you and your beautiful naivety. My friend chose to go there from Pakistan having been sold/marketed a fake dream.

He was treated appallingly in a highly skilled white collar role. Passport taken, squalid overcrowded living conditions, 20 hour days, fear of spurious criminal charges to name just part of it.

He will never return, but did say their treatment compared to blue collar workers was so much better.

He does and did indeed then, send money home. But does that now from a well paid UK role.

scottishgirl69 · 02/03/2026 12:50

Are we now on the -it's not really that bad in Dubai curve because other immigrants go there to send money home to their (poor) families. Not really sure that that's the flex you think it is

That doesn't negate the appalling human rights record some countries have. It might be unpalatable for some people to talk about but personally I'm quite glad these threads exist

Because there are too many people - including people I personally know (fitness instructors) who just jet off to places like Dubai and who don't know far less care about human rights

Then they come home going on about how feminist they are and how their brands "empower women".

People can knock themselves out and go on as many holidays as they like to wherever they like - but let's not pretend that some of these countries treat westerners very differently to how they treat their own people. Particularly women.

And from what I’ve heard I wouldn’t recommend getting into financial difficulty in Dubai even as a Westerner.

It’s an awful place where morality went to die on so many levels.

An ode to consumerism in the desert.

I can’t understand the mentally of anyone who goes there on holidays, particularly when we are spoilt for choice closer to home.

gemini0606 · 02/03/2026 13:05

You could not pay me enough to go to Dubai (my husband worked there on and off for years and absolutely hates the place)

Well, it'll probably be cheap .....🤷‍♀️
I went to Egypt the year after all the terrorist bombings and stayed for 14 nights in possibly the best hotel I've been to in my life for £700 inc flights!
2yrs later, tried to book same hotel/holiday and it was £6k per person 🤦‍♀️

Echobelly · 02/03/2026 13:18

I wouldn't book a holiday there at any time, but definitely not in the foreseeable future!

MrThorpeHazell · 02/03/2026 13:21

Man is not fit to be allowed out in public without a minder.

waterrat · 02/03/2026 13:36

Watching a country being bombed and planning a holiday there

the delusion is bizarre.

WhatAreYouDoingSundayBaby · 02/03/2026 14:02

No way, I think recent events have just serviced to highlight what a dangerous position Dubai is actually in. No need to travel to that part of the world with the current level of risk.

I would never have gone there anyway. But I’d never considered how close it is to Iran.

At least the Brit’s have a plan. There are 22,000 Irish there with no plan.

Can’t they also receive assistance from the uk government due to the common travel area?

"He think this will all soon blow over"

And Putin thought he'd have Ukraine in the bag within a fortnight. What if it takes months / years / decades?

It's all very well to hope for the best, but it's considerably more sensible to plan for the worst. I'd be looking for another holiday destination.
