He think this will all soon blow over

Reasons for going there, it's not too far to fly, the sea is nice and warm, and the beach nice, nice standard of hotels and restaurants

It's the fashionable thing today to bash Dubai.

OP, Dubai is an interesting place. (ETA: You can also go for day trips to other emirates.) Your DH isn't unreasonable to want a holiday there, but I'd wait a few weeks and see what happens.

Edited

Perhaps they didn't help themselves by filling it up with duck-lipped influencers on freebie trips.

ladygindiva · 02/03/2026 09:15

He's mental. If he wants sunshine and a nice beach there are literally hundreds of other safer options.

I have no interest in Dubai but do people really think this is still going to be an issue in October?

Yes quite possibly. Why wouldn't it be?

"Exactly. Go to Spain. They’re on the right side of history"

Brilliant, though I expect many may miss your heavy sarcasm completely!

Spains history of atrocities is appalling - driven by religious intolerance and colonial expansion, resulting in massive demographic shifts and the destruction of indigenous cultures.

Edited

So, for example, your ancestors (let’s say great grandparents for the sake of argument), were mass murderers. You’re not, but they were. Someone tells Jane that Bob next door is a mass murderer, Jane’s response is ‘yeah but drysherry’s great grandparents were mass murderers so I don’t know why you’re complaining about Bob’

Doesn’t make any sense does it?

Yet ANOTHER Dubai-bashing thread! This is getting silly. How many of you people who are full of criticism have actually been there or are you just repeating stories you have read on social media? We are in our 60s, have visited Dubai several times and we love it - we are obviously not influencers or party-goers or anything vaguely newsworthy but love it for the gorgeous hotels, great food, great weather, interesting history and yes - shopping! Did you know that women hold most of the wealth in the ME - they are dripping in gold under those abayas!

And why so much outrage that their culture frowns on people kissing and hugging in public? Surely you can go a few hours without clinging to and kissing your partner? They do turn a blind eye to unmarried couples sharing hotel rooms now so there is plenty of time for all that once back at the hotel. At least you don't see drunk young women staggering down the road in clothes which leave nothing to the imagination!

I am very sad to see the damage and destruction which has been inflicted on Dubai and Bahrain - another lovely place to visit.

I agree with everything you've said here.

allthingsinmoderation · 02/03/2026 09:17

Obviously unwise currently due to uncertainty.
Wait before deciding.

Princejoffyjaffur · 02/03/2026 09:29

I suspect not. But @Redrobinrose won't be able to get travel insurance right now. People are having issues with travel they've already booked as it is...

Jfnfnr · 02/03/2026 09:17

I agree with everything you've said here.

Relying on them to turn a blind eye is quite risky. Sometimes they don't.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 02/03/2026 09:54

Well, he should get a bargain.

Doteycat · 02/03/2026 10:00

Is this a pisstake?
Leave him book it if hes that stupid.
Id be saying you can book all ya like but i wont be getting on the plane.
Shameful ignorance on his part.
Is he like this in your everyday life?
I actually couldnt live with such a fool.

StickySeason · 02/03/2026 10:06

This reminds me of the week before the covid lockdown when my sister merrily announced she’d booked a holiday to Greece for the Easter holidays. She was convinced everything would be back to normal quickly. I guess optimism is a good trait.

Maray1967 · 02/03/2026 10:07

DrySherry · 02/03/2026 09:02

Completely agree. I was just responding to a (now deleted) post of particular stupidity. It was the poster who wrote "Go to Spain, at least they are on the right side of history" that I was responding to. Sometimes you have to call out ignorance when it's on that level 😉

Yes, very worrying!

To get back to the thread - OP, I wouldn’t be booking to go there at the moment. Personally it’s not on my list of places to go anyway, but either way it doesn’t seem wise to tie up your deposit money on a trip that might not happen and might not be insured.

LeafyMcLeafFace · 02/03/2026 10:08

Jfnfnr · 02/03/2026 09:17

I agree with everything you've said here.

It sounds bloody awful, a city built on conspicuous consumption where ‘dripping with gold’ is considered to be a good thing. All the while knowing that there is forced labour supporting this lifestyle.

Where you’re relying on people turning a blind a to you being able to live your private life in private and you’re not able to relax and behave naturally in public.

There is literally no part of this which sounds remotely appealing.

There is a world of difference between this and drunk young women (interesting that it’s only the women you don’t like) staggering down the road wearing clothes that leave nothing to the imagination. If you don’t like that, there are many other places to go on holiday

Moveoverdarlin · 02/03/2026 10:10

I love Dubai and have holidayed there a lot over the last 15 years. However he’s off his fucking head to book anything now. Park the idea and see what the situation is like in September. But I think it’s very unlikely and it will take them years to build trust with western tourists after this.

WhatsConfusingYouIsTheNatureOfMyGame · 02/03/2026 10:18

Will you even get insurance if you were to book now? If he thinks it'll all blow over soon then it'll be no great shakes to wait til it has.

CautiousLurker2 · 02/03/2026 10:21

If you park the issue over whether you think people should go to Dubai - I would suspect that any travel insurance would be invalid as he would be booking a trip in the middle of national/international conflict knowing there is a risk and while there is a live foreign office advisory note published. I’d wait and book in aug/sept if he really wants to go and when you know if things have settled down and the govt advisory has been lifted.

Until then, yes, he’s mad (or just stupid).

BuffetTheDietSlayer · 02/03/2026 10:23

NotThatSerious · 02/03/2026 08:40

If you apply this logic to the rest of the world no one would visit anywhere or buy anything ever again. It’s silly

Don’t be silly. There are plenty of countries to visit that are not built by modern day slaves and are not serviced by modern day slaves.

So you are fine supporting a country that actively, willingly and knowingly has slave labour?

With so many other beautiful places to go in the world to visit such a horrible plastic place that actively encourages slavery is beyond that pale.

There isn’t anything nice about it. And no I don’t think people who travel there have a conscience nor care about other people who are actively abused.

I don’t care about their laws - countries can have the laws they want and as a tourist you should obey them.

Emma6cat · 02/03/2026 10:44

Dubai is a very fake place, built by modern day slavery. If you like shopping malls, hotels, restaurants then go for it. If you like nature, animals, showing affection, green spaces then maybe other parts of the world. I have a friend who loves it, and a friend who hates it.

It could be months before flights are back to normal. Anyone with any sense would go elsewhere

It’ll probably be faster than that but still booking rn seems a bit much. At least wait a few weeks.

pocketpairs · 02/03/2026 10:50

Why would anyone want to visit a mall in the desert where immigrants from poorer countries are treated like slaves?!

Pumpkinmagic · 02/03/2026 10:51

Can’t understand why anyone with any conscience would visit there even before all this trouble started.

Parrlorwarrior · 02/03/2026 10:53

gostickyourheadinapig · 02/03/2026 04:19

Definitely. Or Sicily, Greece, Croatia, Cyprus, southern Italy.

Cyprus? I don’t think so.
