To buy a cheap car and park it infront of my house so no one else can

originalsst58 · 01/03/2026 16:10

Yes I know I don’t own the road in front of my house, but I’m sick of selfish people parking right up to the dropped kerb, making it difficult for me to get in and out of my driveway. And I’m also sick of neighbours parking there while their own driveways are empty. The latest annoyance is my neighbour leaving his van outside my house and parking his car in front of his own house. What a fantastic view I have now, a huge van blocking most of my window. His driveway is also empty. I wouldn’t have minded if he parked the car there, but clearly, he doesn’t want to see the van from his own house. Selfish prick!! There’s a back story to this. I don’t get on with him or his partner and won’t ask them to swap the vehicles around. They wouldn’t anyway. So I’m considering buying a cheap runaround, getting it taxed and MOT’d, and just leaving it there for a year. If people weren’t so self centered and thought about others, I wouldn’t even think of doing this!!! Has anyone done this before??

I would do it with a very cheap old scooter

JackGrealishsCalves · 02/03/2026 15:19

Know the OP has actually realised the cost outweighs tge benefits now but what people were not thinking about was if you buy a banger and park it outside the house, when you come to renew the MOT there's a good chance the car won't even start, never mind passing another MOT.
It's short term at best

I parked my car there this morning, and he’s had to park the van outside his house now (so it is possible?!). I work from home, so my car won’t be moved for a few days.

It would have to be insured to be on public rd

Don’t matter. If it’s not moved for a period of time it can be considered abandoned. Any neighbour can call the council, who will then send someone round to check. They put a sticker on your car if they have checked twice and deem it not moved. You then have a certain time to move it. I think it’s more applicable in the case of something wrong with the car I.e flat tyre or if no one has driven the car for weeks / months. This happened to me a the car was insured, mot and taxed. I was surprised as you usually can’t get our council to do f all but I guess it a money making thing for them too.

Lol I've done the same with inconsiderate neighbour parking

Changename12 · 02/03/2026 15:42

OP, could you just not pay the council to get your dropped kerb widened and markings put on it? I am sure if you explain that you can’t always get out they will allow it.

wonderwhynot · 02/03/2026 15:43

I considered doing this and now circumstances with bigger vans it is getting worst. As long as the car is legally on the road and you can afford it, I would go ahead.

Dora33 · 02/03/2026 15:56

We had the same at a previous house. The next door neighbour always parked his work van outside our house rather than in his driveway or outside his own house.
He nearly alway was slightly over our driveway so I always tried to reverse in as it wasn't a wide driveway.
I had mentioned it to him, but made no difference.
I ended up trying to park there myself (though weekdays he was always home before me) rather than the driveway or outside his house.
There was plenty of on street parking. So I didn't mind parking on street. Though once I started parking outside his house, he did park outside mine less.

I see a couple of people have suggested a scooter or moped, but unless OP passed her car driving test pre 2001 (which means she can ride a 50cc moped without L plates or CBT) she would need at least a CBT (around £180 if you pass first time) in order to be able to get insurance on it. And CBTs need renewing every 2 years (and there's a consultation in progress to change the law around renewing CBTs in order to stop people who just keep renewing without passing the full practical tests).

Also a lot of small motorbikes and scooters get stolen from the street even in nice areas regardless of locks or chains and if the neighbours are dicks they'll likely just pick it up and move it.

A classic car would get round MOT and tax but you're unlikely to find a cheap one that doesn't need any work.

ChavsAreReal · 02/03/2026 16:36

We have a neighbour who did this with a trailer. Put a clamp on the wheel and left it there. I can see why he did it. People used to park inconsiderately in that small spot.

They dont anymore!

mrsCtheRed · 02/03/2026 16:38

Do it OP!
If its something that riles you, and you can afford to do it its well worth it.
Thats exactly the type of thing I'd do 😁

Andthentherewerenone1 · 02/03/2026 16:51

@originalsst58
Do it. We had this. Tosser neighbour parked his fugly van outside our house right to the dropped kerb, like an inch. Most days he had a mate parking right up to drop on the other side so our drive almost impossible.
We tried parking out but it just became a cat and mouse game. Bought a £600 runabout with 9 months MOT. Insurance was cheap as second car on our policy. Yes, it’s money I’d rather not spend but now I’ve got peace of mind I can use the drive.

Silver lining is I use the runaround for trips to the dump or picking up garden stuff and it’s a great extra cold store for Christmas food lol.

Yay!

TheRussiansAreComing · 02/03/2026 23:28

Fantastic idea OP.
Your insurance will be cheap because you will only use it for domestic pleasure, and annual mileage will be nearly zero.

Get one with low tax.
And you get to royally piss them off.

So now you're as bad as everyone else. Parking on the road whilst your driveway is empty?

If you looked out of my window, you would understand. That's all I can see.

If you had to park one of your vehicles outside your neighbours house, would you really pick a huge van over a small car? Yes they can park there, but there's also something known as courtesy.

Our next door neighbour used to do this.
None of us had driveways back then, we still had front gardens. We had one car, he had a car and a van. He would park the van out side our house, and his car out side his. If he moved his van, then he would put the car where the van was. We asked him if he could park it a bit further up so we could actually get outside our own house but he said he liked the van outside because he had a lot of tools on it and wanted to keep an eye on it. We had a young baby at the time and it drove me mad.
One Saturday we went on a day trip to the seaside. By the time we got back it was nearly midnight, pouring with rain and our baby was asleep. We ended up parking in the next street and walking back to our house. We were soaked.
That weekend, our front garden got dug up and a dropped kerb was put in not long after. Neighbour had to find elsewhere to park....

Redbushteaforme · 03/03/2026 13:26

You don't need to splash put on a car. Buy a tow-along trailer and leave it in the space. Won't obscure your view and doesn't need insurance or an MOT. Just make sure it's nice and heavy. I know a house-owner who did this and it was very effective.

hcee19 · 03/03/2026 13:55

Ofcourse, because she is different than anyone else in the road, who leaves their driveway clear to park in the road...

I'm afraid you really, really have to come to terms with the fact that you don't own the road and you can't order where people must park! I know the van is awful but that is life. It really is. Stop focusing on it.

She can't order, but she can influence by parking there herself. After all, he doesn't own the road either.

Who said I ordered him to stop? I didn’t. I just parked my car there. Are you saying that they can park there, but I can’t? I don’t understand?

Of course not, but you have an empty driveway. Park there!

Nail on the head. Unfortunately, arrogant people who don't give a shit about others need the same doing to them as they generally have no consideration and don't care who they annoy. Most of the time, they "could" do other things that cause less annoyance to fewer people, but that involves them actually thinking and often walking a few steps more, which many are too thick/lazy to do!
