What’s the most unusual name a child in your kids class at school has had?
Almost every other child I know is called Harry, Theo, Leo, Olivia….would love to hear some unusual examples of names!

Khaleesi - Named after Game Of Thrones character

MiddleAgedDread · 01/03/2026 19:30

Ptarmigan
(it’s the Scottish equivalent of calling your child grouse or pheasant!)
david seems unusual in the under 10’s even though it’s a little perfectly normal name

Clary, which I love ( girl ) and Tate ( boy ) and Sennen ( not sure as was very little ) , all names of children on a beach in Cornwall. Locally, probably Uffa, only ever heard of one and we have had some fairly unusual names at school over the years.

DGSs class there's an Anikin (boy) loads of kids with surnames for first names ie Parker Bradley etc
I had a very unusual name for the time and didn't know ajy other kids with it . It's used more often now . My Mum wanted to call me Morgan but she was out voted .

DH and I used to joke about calling DC3 Gweek, after a holiday in Cornwall Grin

We have a Bear and a River. They really seem to suit the names. Both families are middle class hippy types.

My DS has finished school now but his was probably the most unusual name in all his classes - not sure why because it's a perfectly normal Welsh name, in Wales, but barely anyone seemed to have heard it before and he used to dread supply teachers attempting it!

In college last year, he had a Graeme in his class. I've never met a Graeme/Graham under 40 so that was quite unusual.

As a supply teacher I would start by apologising for any names I got wrong and ask the students to correct me.

It can be a minefield. Iona could sound like eye-oh-na or Yona.

Unusual names from when I was at school:
Dympa, Philomena, Anthula, Savula, Lillian.

Primrose.
Eden.
Edie.
Heidi.
Rocco (boy).
Frank. Not unusual as such but not come across many under 10s called Frank.
Parker (boy).

And Ebeneezer

We've also had a few King/Queens too.
King Simon, Queen Sarah etc.

18 years ago, in my granddaughter's class, there was an Ocean, a Buddha, a Tiger Lily and a Daffodil.

SleepingStandingUp · 01/03/2026 19:45

We have a Castiel

Cherrybomb00 · 01/03/2026 19:48

DS has an Etta and a Rosalie in his year which I think are absolutely gorgeous names.

DD (age 11) went to nursery with a Julie and has a Maverick and a Honey in her year.

My friend taught a Blessings which is a pretty standard African name…. he also taught the younger sister MoreBlessings a couple of years later

Poor child! She’ll be ‘Nosy’ Parker for years….

I didn't think of that but yes she will! I immediately thought of Lady Penelope's chauffer in Thunderbirds.

@SisterMarie Thank you, saved me a job fishing out the link 🤦🏻‍♀️

Flinderskleepers · 01/03/2026 19:52

Ziggy and Oslo. Both awful. Especially if not a David bowie fan, or you haven't been to Norway respectively.

fairmaidofutopia · 01/03/2026 19:52

Harbour and Tallow

Vivienne1000 · 01/03/2026 19:53

It doesn’t matter what you call your child. Teenagers will find nicknames for all of them….

Sassylovesbooks · 01/03/2026 19:54

There used to be a Godrick in the school I used to work at.

FartyAnimal · 01/03/2026 19:54

Ptolemt, Phoenix, Boris, Oritchay

Mumandcarer80 · 01/03/2026 19:54

Boux I just want to say I hate unusual names. What’s worse is when they change the spelling. I was the only girl in my infants and junior school I hated it. My name is popular now I’m not saying what the name is as it’s outing.

Pliudev · 01/03/2026 19:55

We had lunch with a poet whose DD was called Celestial Tranquility. She was quite naughty.
