What’s the most unusual name a child in your kids class at school has had?
Almost every other child I know is called Harry, Theo, Leo, Olivia….would love to hear some unusual examples of names!

Not really.

I know of a Wolf (7 yrs old) and a Bear (same). Both boys.

Why 'not really'?

I'm waiting for the usual knee jerk reaction to names characterised as 'American' and comments about unpronounceable Irish names. I guarantee they will be posted.

Colin

I work in a primary school, the year groups I look after have: Tiggy, Leni (both girls), which are probably a little more unusual. We've had a Harper-Drew, Teagan-Mae before. We have more usual boys names.

Friend and I were walking her dog past a school the other day whilst the reception children were playing and I heard a child shout Gerald! I said to friend that’s my father’s name. Teacher heard me and smiled. We need more Geralds!

Aside from names that are unusual because they're from a different culture, unusual names I've seen at my children's school include:
Duke
Noomi
Capone
Gully

In my son’s class there seem to be a few examples of place, country or nationality names - such as France or Dutch - which sounds unusual to me.

Quite a few old fashioned names that I didn’t realise were part of the grandad/ grandma name craze - even things like Brian. My DD had a Beryl in her class.

Still quite a lot of Harrys, Ethans etc though

I know a reception age Beryl and it really suits her!

Honestly the most unusual are the real old school names so for example my DD is 13 and she has a Paul, Theresa, Patricia and Mark… To me, all of those names scream 60+. The best thing is Paul and Mark are friends so when she mentions them I always picture them in a pub.

Yup! We have a Malcolm, lovely little boy but when I hear about him I’m picturing him in a faded suit with a receding hairline.

Crunchymum · 01/03/2026 19:15

Our school is very international so there are lots of European and Skandi names I've never heard before. Also lots of top 10 names too though. Every class has at least one Harry and one Isabelle / Isabella.

I am particularly fond of Hectar, not a name I'd have ever considered but I really like it (the little lad is quite a sweetie).

Most unusual name ever is Pumpkin (wasn't a nickname - was in a Dr's waiting room and I overheard the parent talking to the receptionist!).

I know children Summer, Autumn, River and Forest! (Not all in the same class)
Also Diane, Eric, Victor and Elizabeth

Oh I have one from your first list and two of the other names are in her class at nursery! But I don’t think they’re unusual or out there and have across several Rivers

Nineandahalf · 01/03/2026 16:09

The one that stood out to me was Rachel
You don't often hear that on under 35s!

I think it’s a really common name for kids?! I know quite a few.

Starbri8 · 01/03/2026 19:18

Ultravox · 01/03/2026 17:00

Lark - really suits her!

I wanted to call my last daughter Lark I think it’s just beautiful, DH vetoed it , said it sounded harsh … still annoyed five years later !

FairyBatman · 01/03/2026 19:18

There’s only one name in DC class that I’ve never heard before Crae.

WildHam · 01/03/2026 19:21

Paperwhite209 · 01/03/2026 19:26

Bushmillsbabe · 01/03/2026 16:11

Thor, Star, Wolf are all in my daughters year. And Gary - not an unusual name, but not one you hear much at primary age

I know a teenage Gary.

And once knew a Kherakeisha.

Keepitrealnomists · 01/03/2026 19:26

I love unusual names but some of these names are wild. Do people not realise they are naming a person not a pet.

damntheyaremymonkeys · 01/03/2026 19:26

We have a Josephine in DD's class and I love it. The rest of the class are pretty common names (not that that's bad, DD is one of them, but it's nice to see something that isn't so common nowadays)
