What’s the most unusual name a child in your kids class at school has had?
Almost every other child I know is called Harry, Theo, Leo, Olivia….would love to hear some unusual examples of names!

Side note, freaking LOVE Queenie

I had a great aunt Queenie - not sure when she was born but i'd guess 1890s. I remember her but not very well.
I've never met another one.

Mine are full of Matildas, Jemimas, Arrabellas, and then there’s Isis.

I follow an American “influencer” (don’t judge me) who recently named her son Graham Alan. She probably has no clue (nor would care) that this would be amusing in the UK in this day and age.

Does she pronounce it "Gram"?

ShakyBake · 01/03/2026 22:54

Going back 30 years we had a young chap by name of Gearstick turn up for 1 term. The bizarre thing was, no one seem to think it was unusual (I did, and remember distinctly telling my parents on the evening after school)

Ridiculous names.

Sound like Gladiator fans!

Happy to offer up two of my own children's names. Leopold and Winston. I didn't think they were that unusual but we've had raised eyebrows and somebody even asked if Leopold was a made up name.

Leopold Bloom is the main character in a James Joyce book from a century ago.

Old or not very common names I've come across over the last while include

Kyren
Jeffrey
Conall
Kai
Dáire
Bridget
Breda
Anais
Adrienne
Nancy
Evelyn

Dd13 is in high school now and she has 2 Byron’s in her classes. There’s a Betsy aswell.
she had a kyrill and a Thor in primary school along with a star.

DS 18 had quite a few unusual names in his years at school. Had a JP, helix, phoenix, Ines, JD, taiyo and Aris in his high school. Some of them were in his primary school too. He had 2 Marshall’s in primary school too aswell as a Dayton.

tbh DS himself has an unusual name which I can’t mention as would be incredibly outing but we literally get comments on it everywhere we go.

eastegg · 01/03/2026 22:55

I’m fairly unsurprisable when it comes to names, I’ve had 3 children go through school and nursery over 17 years in a very diverse area which also has its fair share of try-hards, so I tend to just think ‘right, fine’, whatever it is.

The most unusual name I’ve ever come across was an adult through work so not strictly answering the OP. It was a youngish man from, iirc, Zimbabwe, called Termination. My work also exposed me to shed loads of cultures as well, but I confess that one did make me think ‘sorry?’

Marmalady75 · 01/03/2026 22:56

Zed and Marguerite at the most unusual at dc’s school, but there is a Feebay (pronounced like Phoebe) at a sports club.

PyongyangKipperbang · 01/03/2026 22:56

@honeyrider
I remember Anais being very popular early 90's, possibly due to the perfume.

And I know an Adrienne who is 80 and very glamorous, she certainly doesnt look her age at all!

Feebay? That poor child.

Presumably done to have yooneek spelling.

ETA I often wonder whether kids with these yooneek spellings will end up changing their names to the usual spelling.

PeacockPalace · 01/03/2026 22:59

I had a client at my old job called Integrity.

Toomuchprivateinfo · 01/03/2026 22:59

Stuart!
Fox
Peony

BlueOrangeDreams · 01/03/2026 23:01

They are usually Indian or Arabic names and presumably normal if you are Indian or Arabic.

Do know of a girl called Love.

Of these, Kai, Nancy and Evelyn (often shortened to Evie with Evelyn for the birth certificate) are all very standard baby names for the last 15 years.

I wonder if she was a big fan of drag race UK.

Besidemyselfwithworry · 01/03/2026 23:07

I know a little girl called Paisley as her Dad proposed to her Mum in Paisley and it really suits her - she’s fun and quirky like the name.’

SapphireSeptember · 01/03/2026 23:08

DS isn't at school yet, but I know a little baby girl from church called Rejoice which I think is lovely. 🥰

HornyHornersPinger · 01/03/2026 23:10

Yoda.

Not even joking....

MBL · 01/03/2026 23:12

I absolutely love some of these names. So nice to see some different ones.

The people who have named their UK based kids thinks like Mark and Lynda are ahead of the curve. They'll come back round and seem like the name of a younger person. I think they are lucky. Eg if a see a Mollie on a list or a work thing I would assume no older than late teens/early twenties.

I wonder how long before it becomes Rocky Road 🙈

In France you're not allowed to give your children outlandish names like Rocky-Rose or, like a PP mentioned, Viper. For a girl. That is appalling. For a boy, too, but calling your a girl Viper just seems designed to humiliate. While there are some nice names on this thread, there are also lots of really dreadful ones. I don't think it's fair on the child, and I think it's great of the French system to recognise that.

I hope some of these children whose parents saddled them with dreadful names change them when they grow up. I can't imagine the bullying poor Viper must get.
