What’s the most unusual name a child in your kids class at school has had?
Almost every other child I know is called Harry, Theo, Leo, Olivia….would love to hear some unusual examples of names!

I know of a Wolf, Arrow and Rocket. All boys primary age.

Ridiculous names.

I work in a primary school, the most unusual names are either old names which have been revived- Laurence (Laurie), Herbert, Audrey, etc. or Ethnic minority names which I won't share here. Most white kids are called variations of Ellie, Harry, Teddy, Bonnie, Alfie, etc. lots of names ending in an e sound

You sound v judgemental.

I've often wondered that too.
It's the same with seasons. Autumn, Summer and Winter are not particularly unusual names nowadays but I've never heard of anyone called Spring? Why? It's a beautiful season and not an ugly word, what's wrong with Spring?
And what makes Willow or Rowan an acceptable name but not Sycamore or Larch?
Why do some names become accepted, even conventional, names but other words from the same "group" would provoke derision if used as a name?

What's the actress I am trying to fetch in my head, really unusual floral name... I want to say "Honeysuckle" but surely can't be that.

Superb.

Can't think of any way out names.

Theunamedcat · 01/03/2026 22:32

Roman he couldn't look less like his name tbh

You should ask teachers thos question my sons teacher used to do extra marking for extra wages like a second job and some of the names were funny

One of my children has a boss whose name fits together like surname rick first name pat iyswim we always played the initial game before we named any of our children one was nearly named CND so the middle name got changed BBC was nearly a friends initials thanks to family names

Yes we are overthinkers but we have a relative who is VPL one who was HP (and teased for being fruity at a time when that meant something) we ended up turning it into a fun game for the kids 😂

Is this outing, possibly..
my daughter is in reception and she has an Ocean, Lake and 2 Rivers in her class and sadly not in her class but next door in year 1 there is a sailor. (We are in London not by the coast)
In the same reception class we also have Aslan, Meadow, and Barbara.

canonlydoblue · 01/03/2026 22:38

Happy to offer up two of my own children's names. Leopold and Winston. I didn't think they were that unusual but we've had raised eyebrows and somebody even asked if Leopold was a made up name.

Pyjamatimenow · 01/03/2026 22:43

Lord I feel so boring in my choices of names reading this thread.
I know of a Portia, a Basil and an Axel

BrownTwigStanding · 01/03/2026 22:46

Rocky and Woody.

We have a Josephine in DD's class and I love it. The rest of the class are pretty common names (not that that's bad, DD is one of them, but it's nice to see something that isn't so common nowadays)

Edited

My daughter is a Josephine. I get so annoyed when people call her Josie though.

CotswoldsCamilla · 01/03/2026 22:49

Mine are full of Matildas, Jemimas, Arrabellas, and then there’s Isis.

I follow an American “influencer” (don’t judge me) who recently named her son Graham Alan. She probably has no clue (nor would care) that this would be amusing in the UK in this day and age.
