AIBU to be anxious about a trip to Las Vegas

We are supposed to be flying to Las Vegas on Friday. I’m really worried about it. Am I being silly? I don’t know what I think is gonna happen I’m just concerned. Anyone else due to travel?

YANBU.

I’m astounded that anyone would voluntarily visit the USA.

Me too!

PropertyD · 01/03/2026 10:33

Honestly - some people. Just stay at home then.

I’m worried about something happening while I’m there and not being able to get home I think

What aspects of the trip are worrying you?

AmandaBrotzman · 01/03/2026 10:34

Well I wouldn't go to the US at the moment but that's been the case for a while. The increase in hostility across the Middle East isn't likely to make it less safe but it's already a shit show.

I go in and out of the US a lot, work and holidays. Just got back from Vegas for work and trust me the only thing to worry about is getting out the plane quick so you don’t spend an hour in the immigration queue 🤣

Absolutely!

My own love for the US has dwindled over time, but it’s a fabulous place and I’ve enjoyed many holidays. I’m old enough to have been to Vegas before it turned into modern Vegas. Brilliant base to visit the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam.

Do flights to the US go over the ME? There are actual Britons stuck there now.

Seriously? Are you asking if flights from the UK to the US fly over the Middle East?

No. I am being sarcastic.

I wouldn’t want to travel to the US not because I think it’s particularly unsafe- though if you are of a certain ethnic origin I’m not so sure- but mostly because I don’t want the trump administration to get a single penny of my hard earned cash.

(yes they have something called TAX on almost everything you buy in the US).

is that not a good enough reason? Similarly almost anywhere in the Middle East, Russia etc.

What country do you live in?

MrsBenevolent · 01/03/2026 10:19

It's not just that though it's it? I have no desire to put my cash into the American economy.

This is exactly why I wouldn’t go.

And the fact that everything costs an a arm and a leg!

Honestly, you'll be fine (your bank balance, not so much lol).

Depends where you travel from, I travelled from the UK and my bank balance was definitely better whilst in the US, far more expensive at home

HelloPossible · 01/03/2026 10:50

Go and enjoy yourself, in my experience it’s one of the best places to have a relaxing beach holiday, stayed at the Mandalay Bay that had an amazing beach area. The different hotels have good free entertainment which we sort of wandered into, saw about 4 free good Elvis shows. I don’t think they do the free drinks as much as they used to but all the food I had was great.

Recommend a helicopter trip to Grand Canyon and see as many shows as you can. I am jealous would love to be at some amazing bar drinking cocktails and not having a clue what the time was. I don’t see how you are going to be caught up in anything.

uk.
lI can hardly help where I live but I can, and will, choose where I travel to (obviously some people have to travel for work and have less say in the matter)

Miniaturemom · 01/03/2026 11:11

I wouldn’t be going to the US and spending my money there and I’m from the wretched place! I think it’s likely to be safe for you, though.

I was taking about Vegas. There's a reason there aren't price tags in a lot of places. And the never ending tipping!

The rest of the US however is generally cheaper or similar cost wise. But it's not as cheap as it was.

Let me guess...Gen Z? 🥲

You can help where you live and yes we can all choose to travel where we want. I was just confused by the mention of everything being taxed in the US? Most things in the UK are also taxed

Agree - it's just that we're not used to seeing it being charged separately. If you buy a new coat which is marked at £50 that's what you pay. It is initially a bit of a shock to pick up something you think is $50, and being asked to pay $62.

Of course they are but buying stuff in the UK doesn’t go to the trump administration! 🤨

I think that’s what makes it seem more because you have to add the tax on rather than just looking at the shelf label

You need to be worried about hideous tackiness, awful food and the worst of American bling. Otherwise, nothing.

Award winning shows and michelin restaurant and areas of outstanding natural beauty. But you go ahead and judge somewhere you've never been poppet.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/03/2026 11:42

Depends what your posting history on SM is like!

Mine is such that there’s no way I’m going whilst they’re under this regime

If no funds were going to the ‘trump administration’ as you call it, do you think the country would be in a better position with no funds for anything?

I have been, poppet! Why would I say that otherwise? I saw the shows on Broadway.
The Grand Canyon is gorgeous, I agree.

That’s a ridiculous question. People living in the US obviously will continue to buy stuff regardless of their political beliefs . I don’t think the us treasury is going to run out of money anytime soon. Surely you can tell that as tourists it’s reasonable to choose where we spend our cash. I’m not sure why that’s such a difficult point to understand.
