Oh, that's all we need. Folks all panic buying petrol, balaclavas and dates. What about Dubai chocolate?

Tikitaka20 · 28/02/2026 16:27

OP, people have done what you asked in your OP and tried to reassure you in various ways. You seem to be ignoring their comments - which you can if you wish. But you’re also posting completely incorrect information, which might panic other posters for no reason and is not okay.

dapsnotplimsolls · 28/02/2026 16:28

I decided to treat myself to some pistachios today so I'm all set.

Oh god what if we run out of dates !!!

they’re literally in every recipe now !

You could come to our house. DH isn’t long back from visiting family in North Africa and dates are a traditional gift especially around Ramadan. I think about 40% of his luggage coming back was dates, rest appears to have been bread and cake.

So we have a very substantial date stockpile.

What on earth have i said to deserve that comment??

You haven’t said anything OP. But no doubt there will be increased prices at the pumps, we filled our cars today too. We are retired so we don’t use our cars every day and often for short distances, so full tanks take us a bit longer to get through. If that saves us a few pounds, I’ll be happy! I remember a little while ago we were paying £1.89 a gallon! Take care.

Read my posts. My partner is away and is definately not.in a safe place. Read before you post.

Yes i am feeling frightened.

You said he was in Asia not the ME. Where is dangerous there?

CreamolaFoam26 · 28/02/2026 16:32

Olympeagal · 28/02/2026 15:55

Ok maybe i am panicking for no reason.
But Iran have just bombed a tourist hotel in Dubai and its these actions that i think will drsg the UK into this conflict. Kier Starmer has annoumced he will help allies in the Midfle East.
I want to pretend its not happening...but it is and seems to be escalating hourly.

They didn’t bomb it. A missile was shot down and the debris caused the fire. My husband is there.

A place where you can't always get pistachios.

WhereYouLeftIt · 28/02/2026 16:33

Olympeagal · 28/02/2026 15:27

The petrol station was busy and its obvious oil prices will sky rocket if the situation remains so unstable.
I will admit i am very anxious. My partner is an engineer snd was in Kuwait only 3 weeks ago. Thankfully he is now in Asia but with flights being cancelled, i do worry how he will get home. Such an awful situation .

Edited

Your partner's flight issues explains your anxiety, @Olympeagal, but please don't worry yourself. I was listening to Simon Calder (travel editor for The Independent newspaper who is often interviewed about such flight interruptions) earlier on the radio, and IIRC he expected it all to be smoothed out and flightpaths redirected within a couple of days.

Remember how all flights worldwide went tits up when Covid hit? Pretty sure airlines would have brushed up their contingency plans for making major changes since then.

Try not to worry. ((hug))

PS: The petrol station was probably busy purely because it's Saturday - mine always is.

@Olympeagal isn’t bothered about that!

Commiserations. We are keeping up with family members in few of the affected countries (again). Bit stressful isn't it

And how does having a full tank of petrol help him out?

I've still got a few weird tins in my brexit box if anyone is desperate for tinned potatoes, carrots and chickpeas.

Tinned potatoes make lovely roasties in the air fryer.

Can make an emergency curry with those

OlympicWomen · 28/02/2026 16:36

You can cut the arms off a sweater and make leg warmers. I learned that on Blue Peter during another ME conflict.

Happyjoe · 28/02/2026 16:36

Ilikewinter · 28/02/2026 15:24

Start to stockpile food?

Hopefully not toilet roll again... sigh!

For reasons too dull to explain, I have about 8 tins of tomato soup in the cupboard, so I'll be OK for a bit 🍅

Bizarrely so do I but I hate tomato soup and think I might prefer to starve.

Olympeagal · 28/02/2026 16:37

@Tikitaka20 i am reading and trying to stay calm.
Thankyou for your measured reply. I did not realise the Dubai hotel had been hit by missile debris and was not an intended tsrget. Although this does illustrate how serious this situation is now.

My partner is now in Asia. He travelled from Kuwait but his flts and next job route him back through the Middle East. Unlikely to happen now, i guess its a wait and see situation. This is why im so on edge.
For those calling me selfish, if it was your husband/partner you may feel the same.

As for some of the sarcastic food stockpiling digs, i never once mentioned it.

Toilet paper 🧻

I buy 72 big rolls a month (well, 3 packs of 24 one month, 2 packs the next ) does that count as stockpiling or should I get double?

It depends. How many arses does that have to serve?

RedRiverShore6 · 28/02/2026 16:40

I need to get some tinned mackerel in tomato as there will be a rush on that anyway as Waitrose announced they are stopping selling it so the other shops might run out
