I’m doing an online mental health course. My writing and terminology has obviously improved as I’ve progressed through the units.

Yet again, my submitted assessment has failed due to it being flagged as AI. I 100% did not use AI and to me it doesn’t even sound like it. So now I seemingly have to find different ways to say everything to get through zerogpt. I was proud of it and I can’t think of any way to change it and don’t think I should have to.

AIBU to be totally narked and feel like giving up?🙄

Welcome to the future. It’s shit.

CousinBette · 26/02/2026 18:30

Are you using the double dash (—) or any of the other AI ‘tells’?

Sometimes it can be flagged even if you have just used grammerly or similar and have then copied and pasted it into your work.

I’m sorry, I don't know what this is? I didn’t even know there was such a thing as an AI detector and I am familiar with AI.

Try using zerogpt 😄

Haha😂 this has made me laugh, what on earth! I will try it!

Put it in ChatGPT and ask it to highlight anything that makes it seem written by AI !!

I didn’t use grammerly. I put 1 sentence into grammarcheck, that’s it.

@StarDolphinsThere are a few stylistic hallmarks of AI. One of these is an em-dash, which is like a lengthened hyphen. — like that.

I like the idea of zeroGPT!

Thank you. I just did this and it changed it to sound more human. I had then put it into zerogpt and it’s highlighted it all in yellow to be AI.

What has your advisor said? Do you have evidence of your work e.g. previous drafts, essay plan, even search history or handwritten notes?

I sympathise - it sounds frustrating!

Ahh ok, thanks. No hyphens at all apart from person-centred/self-harm.

Thank you. I just feel annoyed that I’ve spent so long making it sound right and it’s like I’ve cheated. I’ve spoken to my tutor and she is great and understanding but now I have lost momentum because I can’t think of other ways I would ‘describe how you would support someone to be more resilient’ than I already have. It’s extra annoying because I 100% wrote it. She has said put my answer in an AI detector before I submit and changed it if needed.

I use word for a lot of report writing and it often changes a hyphen to an m dash when I type hyphen then a space, this is automatic, not my choice.
Interesting that this is one of the 'tells'.

Also, I offered all my notes to her and said she can test my understanding in any way she wants. She was really good and said she knew I understood and that this is a recurring issue.

Rather than ask it to change it for you, can ChatGPT point out words or phrases that seem similar to AI?

This must be so frustrating and not susatinable for Universities etc as surely the better AI gets at sounding human, the harder it becomes to write without sounding like AI!!

Tough for educational institutions because obviously AI is an ongoing issue - how do they make it fair for everyone?

But, it does sound like they need some answer to this question other than just failing work on the suspicion of AI - I would find this difficult.

Great that your supervisor is understanding though - good luck x

It is tough and she sounds frustrated with it. She said they do get people that just copy and paste AI and have no understanding. I just think what’s the point in that.

Exactly that! They’d have to do live zoom exams but that would put me under pressure!

I asked ChatGPT to change words and phrases that might sound AI but he’s changed depression to low mood and then on another bit, he’s added loads of sentences for a command word ‘outline’ so I gave up!

We have the opposite problem, i mark assignment that are very obviously done by AI, and yet the AI checker says that it isn’t. I’ve had one that had ALL the hallmarks of it (formatting, m-dash, bullet points, weird lines included) and it still said NO - my conclusion is that the checkers are utter crap!

Monsterslam · 26/02/2026 21:22

I'm an academic. We don't use any AI checkers as they are so unreliable and mostly just catch poor prompting. If we suspect ai use we can request a verbal defence of the work which catches most out i.e., they can't even basically explain the concepts they've written about.

GoldenCupsatHarvestTime · 27/02/2026 09:16

Try copying it all and pasting it into a new document using Control+shift+V and see if that does anything. It removes formatting.

Omg! Ive no idea about AI etc but I ALWAYS use the 'double dash' (didn't know it had a name!) Because I HATE how the single dash looks!

yes, if you type space hyphen space in most Microsoft programs it automatically makes it an em dash. I’ve been writing like this since before generative AI was a thing people can routinely use. Autocorrect is a sort of AI but use of em dashes doesn’t mean something is AI generated.

blubberball · 27/02/2026 10:03

We now have to use AI to tell that our human written work is AI or not? The only thing to do is to switch off the internet and have people sat in a room being observed typing out their work by humans. What a crappy situation
