To be naffed off a robot is deciding if my work is ok

I’m doing an online mental health course. My writing and terminology has obviously improved as I’ve progressed through the units.

Yet again, my submitted assessment has failed due to it being flagged as AI. I 100% did not use AI and to me it doesn’t even sound like it. So now I seemingly have to find different ways to say everything to get through zerogpt. I was proud of it and I can’t think of any way to change it and don’t think I should have to.

AIBU to be totally narked and feel like giving up?🙄

I'm an academic. We don't use any AI checkers as they are so unreliable and mostly just catch poor prompting. If we suspect ai use we can request a verbal defence of the work which catches most out i.e., they can't even basically explain the concepts they've written about.

This is exactly what I want! I want to write my answers and let it be flagged! If the tutor
then rings me & asks me to explain my answers, I can confidently do so!

I’ve pasted my answer in and it’s pretty much all highlighted yellow! I feel like emailing the company, 55mins I’ve been back and forth in zerogpt and I’m now only on 8% AI but it sounds sloppy and clunky and I’ve had take out correct mental health terms tha I use frequently😡😡😡

I thought about this or putting 3 full stops after everything and messaging her saying why I’ve done it!

And we wonder why health is in the state it is in this country? Every aspect of education has become some kind of weird game where those who want to learn can't and those who have little interest / understanding / care easily rise to the top. What a fucking world.

I Just give up!

you have quite abrupt sentences there which don't sound as though they were written by a human - humans tend not to write in segmented abrupt thoughts sequentially - as an AI can, so perhaps see how you might write it as though you were talking about the topic to your mother / aunt / some other non-techy person?

guinnessguzzler · 27/02/2026 10:42

Sorry OP but based on PP's response, are you sure you're not an AI? How do you know? I think you might need to switch to a philosophy course before you can do anything else (good life advice in general 😉)

Skybunnee · 27/02/2026 10:45

Access to services are also important for the 'people' who could benefit from this help - make longer sentences

Why is your tutor playing the game? Why isn't she making a human decision rather than encouraging you to jump through ridiculous hoops?

RandomMess · 27/02/2026 10:48

So sorry for you op, beyond frustrating.

DD had low attendance at uni for health reasons but when she was doing very well in her course & exams got accused of cheating. What she was actually doing was all the extensive reading and not being spoon fed and influenced by the lectures & seminars.

They couldn’t answer why they thought she was cheating, it was only because she had low attendance yet a thorough understanding of the topics 😖

it sounds like she’s up against it too and she sounds very frustrated. She said I need to put it through a detector before I submit it as she will get a black mark when it’s checked by the external company.

I agree with you though and they should just ring the learners and get them to explain their answers, they would then see the ones that are actively engaging in the lessons and learning.

Sorry, that was supposed to be a joke, as in, if it's 100% your work and they keep saying it is written by an AI, maybe you are an AI and you don't know it. It's probably too soon to joke about it and you do have my every sympathy. I hope you get it sorted.

MsGreying · 27/02/2026 11:07

I have a document someone's sent me, I wanted quarter of a page, ideally a table. Instead I have got 1000 words and maybe 50 dashes and other sub-bullets. It's ai crap.
I may well summarise in a table and send it her back.
Actually I might get AI to summarise it.

Rather than ask it to change it for you, can ChatGPT point out words or phrases that seem similar to AI?

This must be so frustrating and not susatinable for Universities etc as surely the better AI gets at sounding human, the harder it becomes to write without sounding like AI!!

This is a crazy world we are living in!

I have no idea how you can tell an essay is from a human mind or AI based purely on the written word (I’ve never asked it to write something for me).

bigdecisionaboutwork · 27/02/2026 11:24

We had an issue with a work system about 10 years ago when we copied and pasted text from Word into the system. It crashed it regularly. When IT had a look, they said there was some code in the background of Word causing an issue and we should copy and paste from Word to Notepad and then into the system to "clean" the text. It might fuck up your formatting but it's worth a try? I.e. write in Word, c+p to Notepad and then back to Word, fix formatting and then see if it's flagged as A.I. Good luck!

Wishfulthinkingonmypart · 26/02/2026 19:33

Tough for educational institutions because obviously AI is an ongoing issue - how do they make it fair for everyone?

But, it does sound like they need some answer to this question other than just failing work on the suspicion of AI - I would find this difficult.

Great that your supervisor is understanding though - good luck x

I work at a university. The way we deal with it is to move away from essays to something that is harder to use AI for, to move to very specialised questions (eg interpret this piece of data) so AI use is limited, to do what the OP suggested and make part of the assessment the working and research, or to use exams or assessments that are supervised. It is very difficult, as you say we want to make it fair for everyone, and for some degrees that lead to professional accreditation you have to make sure the students know the material and are competent.

OP I feel your frustration. Please don't get so caught up on trying to get your essay to pass that you lose the meaning and flow of what you're trying to say. I don't use AI software so it may be different, but for plagiarism software I also review it and discard any common phrases or terminology it may highlight.

Thank you. Currently I type it into my phone notes, then when I’m happy, I have to then type it directly into the online portal as no copy and paste allowed!

I wish we just did the lessons and then verbally answer the questions on a video call!

I was recently made redundant and am job hunting. I had to write a 1000 word statement to go along with an application. I spent hours writing it and decided to check if it seemed ai generated and it came back as 70% ai. The suggestions to change it and make it sound more human just made it sound like a teenager had written it. I've submitted it anyway.

NotMeAtAll · 27/02/2026 11:35

I would have been told off for not using em dashes, en dashes, and hyphens mixed up. Now you can't use them at all?

I don't actually think the em dash thing is an indicator at all. Its something that gets said as a way of telling if something is AI, but I'd be surprised if the actual tools detecting AI specifically look for them - there's loads (and loads) of articles out there about why using an em dash is not a sign of something being written by AI, and how the reason AI language models use them is because humans use them loads too....

Are you using the double dash (—) or any of the other AI ‘tells’?

Don't most people just use a regular short hyphen for these? Informally asking a group of friends last night (because of this thread), of about 10 people, only one had heard of them, and she didn't know what the difference was, or that there might be any difference from a hyphen. And this was in a creative writing group!
Weren't they previously just things that editors and typesetters needed to know about? I know MS Word does some 'correcting' (as on PP has described) and that you can adjust settings so that the programme doesn't do this.
I'm intrigued, seeing as most people just don't really know about them. And they don't have dedicated keys on any keyboard I've ever used (you have to use an ALT code or some finger-twisting keyboard combo)
