WOW but this thread is absolutely chock full of medical professionals.

They must all be on vacay and somebody alerted them to the Britney Spears thread on Mumsnet.

Amazing!!

This is a discussion forum and people have opinions based on what they see from someone’s public Instagram. HTH.

Don’t be silly. You don’t need to be a psychologist or psychiatrist to recognise what mental illness and drug abuse looks like. You just have to be an adult human.

Shitmonger · 27/02/2026 03:39

Moen · 26/02/2026 18:34

Wow, I didn’t realise that!

California has extended holds beyond that, but using them on high profile people isn’t easy with the amount of public scrutiny.

They all have related codes. 5150 is the initial 72 hour hold for assessment. After that there’s 5250 (first 14 day intensive treatment hold), 5260 (second 14 day hold), and 5270 (30 day hold for severely ill patients). There’s also a 5300 (long term care) that lasts for up to 180 days. That’s the one often used when someone has a severe mental illness that they are struggling to get under control with treatment, and as I recall they assess after the 180 days and can issue another 5300 if needed.

So there are lots of options beyond that 14 days, but not ones they’d want to use on celebrities for fear of backlash. Especially since she’s just in her own home, not causing problems in public.

DreamTheMoors · 26/02/2026 23:53

So ever so calmly, why haven’t you at least attempted to get in touch with some sort of professional?
Instead, all you’ve done is put words in my mouth and actions upon me that I knew you’d continue to do.
I could’ve predicted it. Like clockwork.

I don’t think I’m the one who needs to “give over.”
I detect a twinge of guilty conscience, I do.

Merely because you don’t like what I’m saying does not make what I’m saying incorrect or improper.
It only means you don’t like it.
It makes you uncomfortable.
That isn’t on me.
Don’t shoot the messenger, for goodness sake.
Look inward.

It up to 8 pages now - exactly as I predicted.

Genuinely, are you quite alright?

You seem to be taking people having a natural concern for another human (without turning it into a parasocial relationship) rather personally

Yes.

This : Instead, all you’ve done is put words in my mouth and actions upon me that I knew you’d continue to do is a very unusual thing to post.

I don't believe it myself but no, that isn't the prevailing theory. It's that she's died under mysterious circs and her team/family have hired someone to keep this up as a ruse rather than have a Michael Jackson overdose situation.

Oh give over 🙄🙄

We’re not allowed to discuss this unless we also contact the local police? And say what? Do you think they’ve never heard of Britney and it just needs one long English woman to sort everything out?

Thank you, doctor.

You’re quite welcome, I hope the LAPD call you back to discuss your concerns about a random celebrity posting videos of herself on instagram for the world to see.

This poster is in California, which might explain the extremely strange advice to log Britney Spears with 101 as if Alan in my local station has a contact with "the authorities" in the US.

Honestly the USA seems to have worse emergency mental healthcare than us. People in eg LA, Portland, New York wandering the streets floridly mentally unwell and even dangerous.

I’ve worked in some of the big American cities in the finance districts and the streets are utterly filled with people methed off of their faces; sleeping standing up, passed out over bins, lying in the street with their belongings in bin bags. Literally dozens of people in every street. The parks are locked and night and patrolled by security to stop everyone sleeping in them.

Its disgusting. There is very very little support for people once they have started to sink.

No, Mumsnet went all glitchy and attached to the wrong post! Didn’t even realise that had happened, so weird.

It's shocking in the richest country in the world. Unfair on everyone, too - the unwell themselves having to live in dreadful squalor, and everyone else in the cities whose living environment is now less safe.

It's so much worse in the last couple of years too. I went to San Francisco with DH about 12 years ago and there were pockets of this, but he went back for work last year and said it felt unsafe with lots of shuttered stores being used as doorway shelter. Same when he stayed in downtown LA in 2024 when he used to go several times a year with no real issues.

I wonder why Meth never really took off in the uk?

There’s a lot of meth in Aus. But in the UK drugs like ketamine seem relatively more popular, comparatively.

Zennia · 27/02/2026 10:01

If Taylor Swift or Adele started posting videos like this on Instagram, we would think they had lost their minds. There is something very off and uncanny about these videos - the jerky movements, strange facial expressions, unkempt hair and clothes, casual flashing (even if it's covered by an emoji). Totally different from the polished Britney we saw before. I also noticed she hasn't given any interviews or television appearances in years - fine if that's her choice, but it makes me wonder if she is capable anymore of sitting down with an interviewer and explaining her thoughts coherently.

Some Redditors have pointed out what looks like lines of white powder in the background of some of her videos. Obviously this is alleged before anyone @s me.

ShawnaMacallister · 27/02/2026 10:03

Moen · 26/02/2026 17:03

Well, in the UK she could be if she is deemed to lack the capacity to make decisions about her healthcare/medication or if she is deemed to be a risk to herself and others under the MHA. She would be detained and admitted to hospital if the criteria were met.

Not sure how it works in the USA, but there must be something?

To what end?
Sectioning people is only done when they are at the point of harming themselves severely or killing themselves or harming others. It's a short term intervention aimed to stabilise people until they can be discharged to the community again. Some people in the uk who are very mentally unwell with chronic conditions live a cycle of worsening symptoms - self neglect or harm - section - stabilise - discharge - worsening symptoms etc. sectioning doesn't often do anything to promote long term recovery. That happens in the community and only if the person wants to accept the help. I don't see why Britney should meet the threshold to be sectioned from what we can see - why? She's on drugs, manic, mood swings sure - but people are allowed to be those things and if she's not about to die from her drug use then she doesn't need to be detained just because she's manic.

ShawnaMacallister · 27/02/2026 10:17

Comeonthenspring · 26/02/2026 23:09

Did it start with the Federline guy? Before him, she seemed so straight laced

That was a crafted image though wasn't it? Like the fake virgin Christian girl image that she was pressured to embody. Remember her head shaving crash out? She was a staple of the gossip pages clubbing and partying with Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan. They were all doing drugs at that time.

Ninerainbows · 27/02/2026 12:01

I actually think the community she grew up in has contributed. Louisiana is top three for teenage births in the US, the highest being Mississippi where she was born. The average household income in 2000 was $18k and it's pretty religious. That's a lot of bored teenagers rebelling - pretty much what happened to Jamie Lynn!

nomas · 26/02/2026 00:17

I don’t share everyone’s pessimism. I think she will come through this eventually.

Whatever else she’s doing, she clearly has an exercise regime, so there is discipline there.

She says she uses dance to work through things in her life. What might be distressing for us to watch (and it is hugely distressing) may be an exorcism for her.

We don’t know what gets discussed between her and her psychiatrist but I hope she finds peace.

Yeah I was feeling this too. She's been forced her whole life to be overly sexualised in all her performing and it feels like she's doing this now with autonomy. Exploring what was done to her, but now in her own right. A lot of traumas have to be replaced until they can be healed. Maybe even the shocked reactions from the public helps her to process that what was done to her back then was wrong. She even wrote that dancing like that was embarrassing for her, but maybe it's something she can't repress as she's been conditioned that way.

Geography, in part. Meth is popular in rural populations, and rural areas are much more difficult to consistently supply in large countries. When they are supplied, it is prohibitively expensive. As a result, meth took off as the local, cheap, and reliable alternative.

The UK is a much smaller country, and very well connected and supplied when it comes to the global drug trade. Holland is a major producer of inexpensive stimulants, and there’s no shortage of them to the UK. The drug market is so well established that Britain hasn’t ‘needed’ to diversify with meth.
