To not be able to find a good horror movie

WhatwillitTake · 25/02/2026 15:19

Please recommend some good horror movies! I'm not interested in anything with subtitles at this moment in time.

I am scrolling through Netflix and similar and, I have seen all of the interesting ones like The Haunting of Bly Manor etc.

Second Martyrs, I’ve thought about it almost everyday since I watched it.

My highest rated (I keep a record on Letterboxd because I’m sad) are:

Weapons
Sinnerd
REC (Spanish)
Hereditary
Bring Her Back
Haunt
The Colour Out of Space
Pearl

GregoryFluff · 25/02/2026 19:51

I'm gonna vote for the Autopsy of Jane Doe too, really claustrophobic film
As Above Down Below was good
To be honest I quite liked the Blair Witch remake, but I know I'm in the minority there

Weapons is a terrible film - which other people inexplicably seem to have enjoyed. Hmm

It apparently has humorous elements - which almost entirely passed me by. I was too busy being repulsed by the gore and disappointed by the resolution.

Still - you might like it.

Yes, Weapons and sinners. Amazing films. I wasn’t sure about sinners at first but I loved it. Fabulous. And also the V/H/S series of films. Me and dh love anthology films.

Bunionbandit · 25/02/2026 20:24

Primate, it’s an action horror film & didnt pull any punches from the get go, I had to cover my eyes a few times!

outerspacepotato · 25/02/2026 20:27

Forgot about Pearl with Mia Goth.

CinnamonBuns67 · 25/02/2026 20:30

Dead Silence

Crochetandtea · 25/02/2026 20:37

gemdrop84 · 25/02/2026 20:41

Recommended Watches not sure where to stream but a spooky watch:

Conjuring
Insidious

On Netflix:
Get Out
Frankenstein
Quarantine
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)
Seven

Crochetandtea · 25/02/2026 21:09

Dog soldiers. Set in Scotland.

YouBelongHere · 25/02/2026 21:15

Another vote for The Descent, that was the first ever horror film I watched!

My absolute favourite movie of all time is Orphan. I once watched it three and a half times in one day! It's prequel Orphan: First Kill wasn't AS good but I still loved it because I'm just thrilled they're turning it into a franchise after all these years!

I love found footage movies, particularly the Paranormal Activity franchise though they did get sillier as they went on. The first one and The Marked Ones are my favourites though.

Currently working my way through the Scream movies ready for Scream 7! I finished Scream 4 on Monday night.

DarkEyedSailor · 25/02/2026 21:17

Dog Soldiers is great!

Crochetandtea · 25/02/2026 21:19

Don’t watch The last house on the left. There’s a scene in it which is haunting. Genuinely disturbing and I’m not easily disturbed.
Blink twice - moreso a documentary of Epstein’s island rather than a horror film.

Owlcat42 · 25/02/2026 21:30

A dark song - very disturbing
Saint Maud - ditto
Mandy - and again
She will - very atmospheric

Spaghettion · 25/02/2026 21:38

Old films but my favourites are..
The Exorcism of Emily Rose.
The Conjuring 1 & 2.
The Exorcist.
Poltergeist.
The Hills have eyes.
Eden Lake.
The Texas chainsaw massacre.
Mama.
Carrie.

Needhelp101 · 26/02/2026 06:23

So many good recommendations here! The Borderlands (that ending!), The Babadook...
I saw Ghost Stories as a film and a play and it is absolutely terrifying in both formats.

Needhelp101 · 26/02/2026 06:25

Dog Soldiers is great. Very hard to get comedy and horror in the same film but it manages it. Shaun of the Dead too.

Pootle40 · 26/02/2026 06:39

Have you seen Weapons? It was creepy and original.

Worried198423 · 26/02/2026 08:18

Shrooms it's set in Ireland is pretty good.
The Others
The Boy
Orphan

WhatwillitTake · 26/02/2026 16:35

Thank you to all! Some great suggestions there! I've seen alot of the usual ones dating back, but thank you for the reminder; they're definately worth a rewatch. I have vivid memories of driving back from the cinema after seeing The Descent, in the dark with dh (then bf) on a very dimly lit road! I also remember the scene in Paranormal Activity when all of the cupboard doors burst open, and how can we forget the duvet covers sliding off scene!
I appreciate the new suggestions, and very intrigued by Autopsy of Jane Doe, just watched the trailer, and it looks extremely creepy! I will have to find a stream as Prime are charging 😡

Ok - I’m not sure I’m actually recommending this, because it honestly traumatised me for months afterwards, but I guess that’s a mark of its achievement. The performances are frankly a bit too spot on.

Feel sick even typing the words:

Bones and All

There. Don’t blame me if you’re never the same person again after seeing it.

Oh, I need to look this up now!! Working my way through the titles I don't recognise.

House of 1000 corpses and The Devil's Rejects were go-tos at uni.

NotMeAtAll · 27/02/2026 05:34

Sinners is the best film I've seen in years.

Sexentric · 27/02/2026 05:53

It Follaws
Sinners
The babadook

Sexentric · 27/02/2026 05:58

Personally I thought both Smile and Weapons were TERRIBLE. Can't believe nobody else has suggested It Follows. It's genuinely one of the creepiest films Ive ever seen and its actually stayed with me!
