So I have 1483 in my bank account. It needs to last til march 24th (next payday). Normally it’s not an issue but I need to spend 420 of this on a hotel and need spending of probably another 200-300 for that same weekend.(which is at the end of the month!
So that leaves about 760.
I need to buy dd new football boots. Probably around 20-30 for them.
it’s DD’s birthday and so I’ll need to get her gifts (another 100 I’m thinking)
god knows what else will crop up.
I also need to get petrol for my car from this.
tell me I’m not leaving myself short. I know I’m not I just hate thinking I’ll run out. What way would you manage it?

Is this a joke thread?

It’s not even funny! Imagine people reading this thread who literally are counting pennies to pay their bills, feed their children!
OP you are either taking the piss, stupid or unable to read the room .
I have just finished a twelve hour shift working with people who do actually have dire financial problems!

Reassureme12 · 25/02/2026 15:39

Technically I can afford it. I have paid all my bills and put my savings away. This is my money leftover pretty much. I just HATE cutting it down close.

Alot of people live their life on the edge financially. Additional financial expenditure can happen to anyone.
You have more than most

PinkIcedRing · 25/02/2026 22:36

Almost fractured my eye sockets rolling them at this.

So because others have less I can’t worry…sorry I didn’t get that memo.

But you do have money, you just don't want to access it. That's why YABU. If you were desperate you would have to dip into long term savings. The bank can't stop you, you just lose the interest or bonus. The money is still yours!

But that is savings it’s not there for weekends away it’s there for big emergencies.

The you shouldn't have booked a weekend away. Same as anyone else.
If you now think the hotel and costs of the weekend are going to be too much you weigh it up against the flight costs and then say actually we will just lose the flight money as we will then save more by not going.
I see plenty of people who have to cancel holidays because of changes in circumstances in various holiday groups. Else instead of a hotel look at youth hostels. A lot have kitchens so you can then self cater which might be cheaper.

Reassureme12 · 25/02/2026 21:28

No, why would it be a joke. Are people not allowed to worry about money?!

Not when they have loads! You’ll have over £100 per week left as ‘fun’ money

Theyreeatingthedogs · 26/02/2026 11:17

Reassureme12 · 25/02/2026 17:39

Well long term savings can’t be accessed immediately…but my savings that I can access are designated for certain annual costs.

That's not savings. It's long term budgeting. Savings are for things you can't specify or need.

But you keep going on about something big coming up- surely you mean like an emergency cost.

My whole salary I'd £1500 a month and there's not a penny left by the end.

You are allowed to worry even though people have less but surely you must see that this is beyond distasteful.

If you were that worried you'd remember in your rush for work to make a packed lunch.

I think she means ‘something big coming up’ like ‘a night out I can’t say no to’ rather than an emergency, based on her posts.

No I don’t really go on nights out, I don’t drink.

Jesuismartin · 26/02/2026 12:50

What a weird thread.

xILikeJamx · 26/02/2026 12:53

I give myself £400 per month of spending money (which would include any weekends away) and usually have £100 left over! Not sure I would know what to do with over £750!

BringBackCatsEyes · 26/02/2026 12:54

Yes YABU.
No I won’t reassure you, because I think you need work out why you are worried and are seeking reassurance from others. What are you worried about?
You have plenty of money - for your essential outgoings, your savings and for fun stuff (plus £ left over).

You can get some perspective.
You don’t have money worries. That’s nice. Appreciate it.

SkylarkKitten · 26/02/2026 12:57

How about the next time you book a holiday/weekend away, you start putting money aside for it over a few months so you're not hit in one go

I honestly don't understand what the issue is here. You have money left over so just don't waste it on daily coffees etc and instead pack lunch from home, eat cheaper foods, forgo non-essesntials like cigarettes/alcohol/haircuts/whatever

Whilst you have the right to post about money stress, you sound like a silly little girl, which I am sure you're not. You DO have enough. Just not as much as you'd like - do any of us have that? - so adjust for the month and in future, when you book a trip, dont do so unless that money is already saved.....Just like my parents did in the good old days!!

Yeah I think that my problem is the anxiety. I have the money saved but my mindset sees it as a failure to have to use it for anything that is not an emergency. So a weekend away would not be an emergency I just prefer to “bankroll” it as such. Thanks though

So you have every single thing covered for the month, money left over and you're stressed that you're "cutting it close" but everhthing is covered? And one of these reasons is that you're choosing to go away. Okay. 🙄

Yes, I just get anxious when I have <400 in my current account.

Then you need to see someone about your anxiety as this is not reasonable. £400 is a lot of money, £100 per week, just for fun or 'emergencies'.

Yeah it would be for emergencies, like the dc needing something suddenly, they grow out of something or something they need breaks etc. it’s not for me to spend on random fun stuff. I would rather save it.

Then that's what you need to get over. You clearly put money away for savings. The rest you are meant to have to be he able to buy things. You have a funny relationship with money.
