To be fine with the human race becoming extinct

I mean ideally not while I'm around to see it but I assume it will happen eventually and I don't care at all.

I ask this became some people do seem to care and say things Iike "if we don't have more children our species will come to an end!"

...ok and?

I don’t have to know people to care about their suffering. I absolutely care that extinction will mean billions of people will suffer

No reason to think billions of people will suffer. We could go extinct tomorrow with hardly suffering at all. We could decline in numbers over millions of years because we become less fertile. Some of us could evolve into something that does survive. It's not likely to be one or two of us sitting about moping thinking we are the last humans.

For everyone wishing for the end of humanity so that nature can flourish: what is the point of a beautiful natural world existing if no intelligent beings are there to appreciate it? Surely the appreciation of beauty is the goal.

It's like seeing an imperfection in a great piece of art and therefore locking it in a box where nobody is every allowed to look at it. You might as well have destroyed the artwork.

Your comment basically proves the point that humans can’t see value unless it benefits them.
Nature predates us by billions of years and will very likely outlast us, it doesn’t need us to ‘appreciate’ it to have worth, saying the world only matters if we’re here to enjoy it is peak human ego which is part of the problem

That’s a good point. I was thinking more of outcomes like global warming becoming so catastrophic that everyone dies of famine, rising heat, flood, war etc

TheMorgenmuffel · 25/02/2026 15:53

Well yes. There's no reason the human race has to carry and and one day we will be extinct and the planet will be better for it.

ArmchairPanic · 26/02/2026 06:04

I’m fine with people becoming extinct- isn’t it inevitable really? I don’t understand how many on this thread have a holy regard for the planet and so would choose the planet over humans. My loyalty is with humans not the planet, I think we’ve created some beautiful things- songs, poetry, music, buildings etc etc. Human kindness, nobility, courage and decency are far better than anything the inanimate planet has to offer

909% of all species that have lived on earth are now extent
we will go the same way
just hope its after my grandkids have passed on

909%?

The last humans are going to be somebody's grandchildren.

lxn889121 · 26/02/2026 06:19

In isolation, I agree. Why would I care if there are no humans left? I won't be around to be able to care, and there would be no other humans to care about.. and any vague concept of "the world" wouldn't care either.

People care about what happens after they die, because of the people they are leaving behind, but if there are no other people? then...

However, I don't like two themes that come up in these discussions...

The first is the anti-human, we are uniquely evil etc. We aren't. We are uniquely capable, but we aren't unique in our abuse/destruction of other species and the environment. We are just unique in our ability to understand and realize what we are doing.

The second is the association between caring about humanity, and thinking people should have children. The people worrying about the lack of births, aren't doing so because of any fear of extinction.. its a fear that population collapse and imbalance, could lead to system/economic collapse. That wouldn't end the human race, but it would certainly mess up our retirements and children's futures...

susiedaisy1912 · 26/02/2026 06:26

Doesn’t worry me at all. Far too many of us here anyway.

GeneralPeter · 26/02/2026 06:33

Designless · 25/02/2026 13:19

I mean famine and war (and disease and slavery and sexual and physical abuse) have been unifying human experiences for most of our history. Extinction would mean an end to all that.

It would only mean an end to that for humans.

If you want to end famine and war you need to exterminate all sentient beings.

Would you favour that?

sanityisamyth · 26/02/2026 06:40

Harrietsaunt · 25/02/2026 09:28

Yes I agree. As the dominant species on the planet we have caused significant damage and harm.

Objectively, the sooner we become extinct, the sooner the planet will start to recover, and less harmful species will flourish.

Definitely agree.

Do you genuinely see everything non-human on this planet as inanimate?

Are there any other species that can write a list of endangered species or are capable of caring?

I love my cat but she would tear tiny animals to shreds if given the chance.

Humans can cause great harm but we’re also the only species that realises or cares. Sentience and capabilities like this are rare in the universe. It’s not like if we died out we would be replaced by benevolent super intelligent dolphins.

But so what? The universe doesn't need us to keep going. The only reason we need to care and have compassion is because we've caused some suffering in the first place. Literally the globe will keep.turning without us on it, the cosmos will keep expanding. As others have said, Id like to.not personally suffer an.asteroid strike, world ending event bit thr basic idea that we wont be around at some point down the line is fair enough.

RhaenysRocks · 26/02/2026 07:09

Telemicus · 25/02/2026 14:48

Well, before us there was no intelligent life observing and appreciating the beauty of life on earth. (Unless aliens were watching). My point is that intelligent life is better able to appreciate beauty than non-intelligent life.

Taking a work of art and locking it in a box with a spider is a waste of the work of art. The spider lacks the intelligence to appreciate it.

Same thing applies to planet earth if intelligent life cannot appreciate it.

Why? Why is it 'wasted'? Many artists create and never show anyone their work. Its the process of creating it that's important. Very odd and arrogant to.tjink that something only has value id it's being.g observed and appreciated by us.

Yeah I have never understood why people say this either. I recently watched a TV programme of two lions torturing another dying lion. It was injured and couldn't walk, they would attack it, go off for a bit then come back and have another go at it. Just like a house cat plays with an injured mouse.

Do you really think animals would give a shit about the planet if they were able to have the consciousness/power that we have? The idea that animals are sensitive and empathic whilst humans are all 100% evil is laughable.

You think humans don’t behave like this?!

Harrietsaunt · 26/02/2026 07:27

You think humans don’t behave like this?!

Of course some of them do! Humans can behave in evil ways and they can behave in kind ways.

My point is- the people that say humans are all evil and we should leave the planet to animals because they're all lovely and harmless is just as ignorant

RhaenysRocks · 26/02/2026 07:30

But the planet doesn't need us to care about it..thats the point. People keep saying 'but we care about and appreciate the planet so we have value' . It makes no difference at all to the universe if we are here or not.
Just like God's existence or non existence does not rely on anyone believing in him. Unless you take an anti-realist stance on the question, his existence either is or isn't an objective fact that we cant prove either way. My atheism doesn't affect his actual existence (or lack of). Us being here to appreciate tje planet is similarly irrelevant to.its existence or worth

somuchbedding · 26/02/2026 07:35

It’s the interim bit where there are not enough heath workers, carers, tax payers to hep
me in my dotage that terrifies me.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/02/2026 07:47

I quite like the thought of humans being wiped out, and plants (and animals) taking over. It wouldn’t take long for most signs of human activity to disappear under green. A hundred years should largely do it.

Near here a petrol station with a large concrete forecourt was closed, and left unused for a couple of years before being redeveloped. It was astonishing how quickly even that big area of concrete was largely covered with plant life.

Humans ARE animals. Just a cleverer, more evolved species, that’s all.

I don't think anyone says that. I think what people are saying is that other animals don't wreak havoc on the planet and its other inhabitants like we have and continue to do.

QuintadosMalvados · 26/02/2026 08:58

If every single human died tomorrow, I'd oddly be OK with it.
I think it's because without other humans there's no point anyway but if if only half of us died that would be more tragic.
But ALL of us doesn't bother me.

I'd be sad for the animals that rely on human care but that's it.

MasterBeth · 26/02/2026 21:04

Well, you wouldn't be sad for the animals because you'd be dead.

WE WOULD ALL BE DEAD!!!

"If every human died tomorrow, I'd be OK"???

Sociopath.

As long as you're not around, hey? We're all like that, I suppose but it's hypothetical as you'll never see it happen in your lifetime. And if you do, there will be great suffering for yourself and all your loved ones. It's a fantasy people who are unhappy with their lives have a lot.

A great asteroid could wipe us out. There is great suffering now but most of us can easily forget it to get on with our lives.
