To think the new halal and kosher labelling bill is a great idea?

personally I’m not bothered that meat is killed in certain ways, I think if you eat meat you need to make peace with the entire process being pretty horrible for the animals.

But if you’re going to have issues with halal slaughter, you also need to have an issue with kosher slaughter. It’s the exact same process, just with different prayers said. The slaughter process is the same in both methods - the animal has its throat slit and they are left to have the blood drain out.

If the slaughterhouses have no religious denomination, they should not be praying / play prayers while slaughtering the animals.

How can you say this means nothing to me as I am not a believer? It does mean something to me as I want to live in a secular society. Not where religious pressure groups manage to introduce prayers in a slaughterhouse because “it means nothing to non Muslims”.

I just can't understand why it has any relevance to you if you do not eat halal/kosher and are trying to become veggie.

I'm an ex-vegan (went vegan due to animal welfare concerns but had to stop for my health) and now buy all of my meat from local farms as I know the animals are treated well, but I wouldn't have an issue with anything being played to animals as they are slaughtered, as that doesn't have any impact on their welfare.

I assume you share the same town centres and workplaces and consume the same oxygen with people who do not share values that align with yours? An abattoir that subcontracts part of its space to Muslims/Jews/PETA/ humanists does not in any way impact the service it is providing to you as a consumer. Your meat, should you wish to eat meat is not religious, nor tainted in any way. It's a dead animal. By all means don't eat halal or kosher, but if you object because you have religious prejudice, just come out and say it, don't dress it up as animal welfare concerns.

I want to live in a secular society. What people believe in private is each to their own, but I don’t see why we should introduce Muslim prayers in slaughterhouses in a Christian/ mainly secular country.

I don't particularly understand it, but if someone wants to utter some words, oh well doesn't impact my life in the slightest. So just your bigotry showing..

It’s not religious prejudice to want to live in a secular society. I don’t have an issue with halal meat being produced for Muslims and labelled as such. I do have an issue with this being introduced to the entire population in a Christmas / largely secular society. What’s next from Muslim pressure groups?

It does impact my life as I want to live in a secular society. Why does that make me a bigot? I don’t have to accept religion being forced on us like this, just because apparently it doesn’t matter to me.

I worked in several slaughterhouses while training. I’m more concerned about how animals are transported prior to slaughter than how they are killed. I think that’s the biggest animal welfare concern. The fact that there are fewer and fewer abbatoirs means animals can be transported miles and miles to be killed. Thankfully it’s now illegal for live animals to be transported overseas to be killed. This law only came into force a couple of years ago.

OP, the majority of halal slaughtered cattle and other animals are stunned before being killed whereas kosher slaughtered animals are never stunned. It isn’t the exact same process at all. The stunning is an important step in ensuring the animals die humanely.

One important thing to remember is that 99.9% of slaughtermen just want to get on with their job and process the animal as quickly and safely as possible. That means it’s very much in their interests to ensure the animals are calm prior to being killed and that they are killed as quickly and efficiently as possible. If animals are suffering and take a long time to die then it affects the meat. Meat is extremely valuable and businesses aren’t going to risk producing low quality meat.

I once saw a big cull cow that wasn’t killed instantly by being electrically stunned and came too as it was being hoisted. It was really distressed and thrashing around. IPicture how dangerous that is. The slaughtermen treated it very seriously.

All areas in abbatoirs (in England, Scotland and Wales ) where there are live animals and where animals are killed have to have (good quality) cctv that must be available for the independent veterinary offficer (employed by the food standards agency) to see. I know there will always be some rogue abbatoirs but most are well regulated.

I don’t know, I think this is a bit naive. What we all want to believe.

I’ve seen a vega bloke on my YouTube recommended who goes to these places. They all have CCTV… and it just shows animals suffering horribly, workers don’t seem to care one iota about tainted meat.

His name is Joey something I think. Im not vegan/veg, but found his content interesting. Even higher welfare meats have similar issues.

Well it is when most meat in London restaurants and take aways are halal, most meat your children eat in schools and in our work canteens. My work canteen has served halal meat only for 15 years. It’s not labelled. Did you not know this?

Shouldn’t that be the same in most slsughterhouses?

If it was labelled full stun, partial stun, no stun - people can make a fully informed decision.

Yes people have listed the slaughter house codes on line. So you can avoid partial and no stun.

Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, Iceland, Slovenia and Germany and others have banned it - it’s odd the U.K. hasn’t as we are a nation of animal lovers.

(sorry gonna I accidentally quoted your post!)

A core pillar of any democratic society is the right to religious freedom and personal choice. I don't understand why someone would want to have a tattoo on their face or wear the burka, but i respect the individual right to make these choices. You seem to be the type of person scapegoat a particular community based on your own prejudices. Let me guess..you want to ban the burka, and are against turning disused churches to mosques?

Where have I said anything against religious freedom and personal choice? Where is my choice to be free from religion and not eat halal meat and for my children not to eat halal meat at school?

JoshLymanSwagger · 25/02/2026 13:30

As a non-meat eater, and someone who doesn't believe in any god - christian/muslim etc what does it matter?

they're words spoken by someone indoctrinated into a religion,
the animal still dies,
you still eat it...

Tableforjoan · 25/02/2026 13:32

All meat and frankly all food should be clearly labelled as exactly what is it and where it has come from. Stunned, non stunned and religious should be included on that.

I don’t care why someone may not want to eat halal or kosher meat that’s between them and their meat but they should be able to clearly see what meat they are getting. Just like people who want only organic meat.

Ermm, this isn't a secular country. Most laws are derived from the Christianity (e.g. Sunday trading hours). I can't think of a country that is 100% secular..maybe one of the Scandanavian countries?

Surely the option is the vegetarian option next to sausages??

Treacling · 25/02/2026 13:40

It’s not about the words said. It’s the fact they are given a recoverable stun so the shop can say it was stunned.

It’s like been given an anaesthetic on a Tuesday at 8am then coming round at 11am and being operated on at 11:30am. Yes the hospital can honestly say you were given an anaesthetic but the anaesthetic did not help when you were operated on.

The fact that people are not fully aware of what they are buying isn’t right. Labels are placed on food items so I know the sugar, salt etc in them. I have to be given accurate info on the label. I also want to know full stun, recoverable stun, no stun. Just like I want to know organic, free range etc.

And if so many people really don’t care then surely it’s not a big deal if it is labelled correctly.

The tobacco companies were not happy about the change in packaging as I guess they thought it would affect sales. If people don’t care about religious slaughter then the profits will remain the same.

I should have said secular population or increasingly secular population. Scandinavian countries are not more secular than uk no…

Why should you have to eat the vegetarian option if you don’t want to eat halal? I would understand that if I was in a Muslim country, but I don’t understand that in the Uk.

Yep if people don’t care as they say on this thread they’ll buy it anyway. Those who prefer to buy something else can.

A private business choosing to only serve halal meat has nothing to do with secularism / religion and everything to do with money.

How did I know it’s halal in my work canteen? They put a sign up for a short while announcing that they would only sell halal from then on. I stopped eating in the canteen at that point.

I also understand that has to do with money, but if it was labelled as halal and non halal, then I believe the majority of non Muslims would choose non halal. They can only do it because Muslims actively ensure their meat is halal, but most of us are not aware that the meat we consume is halal. I know some might not care, but many would. We should be given a choice.

How's it being forced on you? The meat itself has no religion, it doesn't compromise your secular values. If you don't want to eat either kosher or halal that's fine, just look up the codes or ask in a restaurant and go veggie for that meal.
