To think the new halal and kosher labelling bill is a great idea?

personally I’m not bothered that meat is killed in certain ways, I think if you eat meat you need to make peace with the entire process being pretty horrible for the animals.

But if you’re going to have issues with halal slaughter, you also need to have an issue with kosher slaughter. It’s the exact same process, just with different prayers said. The slaughter process is the same in both methods - the animal has its throat slit and they are left to have the blood drain out.

I always found they were already clearly labelled either way?

Anyway I literally don’t care personally about meat being slaughtered to comply with Halal / Kosher requirements.

It’s still an animal being killed at the end of the day.

No, the requirement at the moment is that if they are to be labelled as kosher, they must follow all requirements of kosher slaughter. They don’t have to label it, they just have to do it properly if they choose to.

I love the BAN BARBARIC HALAL MEAT groups, going on about how it's so inhumane and that they will boycott it. Of course, they have no idea how an abattoir works or what animal welfare standards are. They seem to think traditional slaughter means a kindly vet stroking the animal as it is put to sleep. And they fail to understand most chicken in takeaways is halal.
I think it should be more clearly labelled, it will make things easier for those who eat halal/kosher.

Jopo12 · 24/02/2026 19:08

Around 20% of meat killed in the UK is halal - vs a muslim population of around 6%.
Around 88% of halal meat has been stunned before slaughter. IE most but not all.
Meat defined as kosher can't be stunned.

I do have a problem with not stunning animals before slaughter - in this country it's ridiculous to submit animals to such cruelty just for religion's sake.

But the RSPCA is campaigning against non-stunned slaughter, and I can't see that I can do much. I'm actually more worried about humans being cruel to other humans.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 24/02/2026 19:09

I don't understand, isn't meat already labelled? What is the bill proposing?

SpanThatWorld · 24/02/2026 19:10

I wish people cared more about the way animals are forced to live rather than the way they die.

If you were being killed would you rather be stunned or left to bleed out, surely one minimises unnecessary suffering

All of New Zealand lamb is halal, they are the biggest importers of lamb to the middle east. I suspect the British companies are also importing it, everyone wants a finger in the pie.

The bill proposes that all halal and kosher meat must be labelled as such. At the moment, there is no law to state they must be.

I find it quite ironic that the same people who are dead against halal slaughter are all for kosher slaughter

despire then being essentially the same thing

Lots of animals are slaughtered religiously but they are not labelled as such. There’s loads of Facebook groups researching which slaughter codes are religiously slaughtered. Most supermarket meat is and is not labelled as halal or kosher.

Oh that makes it clear now.

Well doesn’t impact me either way. Dead animals is dead animal.

All animals die by bleeding out, the stunning doesn't kill them. When the aorta is cut correctly loss of consciousness should be within seconds.

That wasn't the question though.

Stunned has to be better than left to bleed out, although the animal still obviously dies.

Ok I understand now, I've no issue with either type of meat, but appreciate some people may have strong feelings about animals not being stunned. However animal welfare is a lot more than just how they die, so surely those people are already buying local reared premium meat anyway? What do they expect to happen to the bits of the cow that aren't Kosher?

Hedgesandbutterflies · 24/02/2026 19:23

I think it should be rather stunned vs non stunned labeling really

Sidestepping the point because that's all you've got.

ExtraOnions · 24/02/2026 19:24

People who protest about Halal are very quiet when it comes to Kosher … you could almost think that they didn’t give a monkeys about the animal, and were using it as a stick to beat Muslims with.

I entirely agree.

But I think both forms of slaughter need to be put on the same level and it’s refreshing to see it happening for once.

Well yes that just tells you it's got nothing to do about animal welfare, it's just a driver for their anti Muslim sentiment.

Stunning stuns them so they are unaware of their throats being cut. Oh come on. This thread is already full of ridiculous comments

Are they? Where? Show us an example of this

Papyrophile · 24/02/2026 19:27

That's why I mainly use my local butcher, which buys meat from known farms and has an investment in the abattoir.

Go to any ban halal meat group on Facebook. They are full of them.
