Sorry if posted In the wrong area! Didn’t know where was best to post!!

last week while on holiday in NYC my partner of 5 years proposed to me! :)
it was a total surprise but I am so over the moon. He proposed to me with a temporary ring off Etsy with the intention of us going shopping together and choosing my engagement ring.

i know I want a dainty, classic engagement ring which I will still love and like wearing in years to come. I’m not into big diamonds at all, I want a small but beautiful diamond ring.

after researching diamonds, cut and ct sizes I know 0.5ct is the biggest I would ever choose for a diamond. I want white gold or platinum, unsure of the band as I like the diamond paved but the plain bands also.

I want a simple but beautiful diamond that sparkles :)

if you have a diamond engagement ring which is, say, 0.25, 0.3, 0.4 or 0.5ct please drop it here so I can see some inspiration :) :)

Congratulations on the engagement.

I wouldn’t call a 0.5ct diamond dainty. On a real person in real life it’s pretty big and noticeable.

My engagement ring is a 0.23ct diamond solitaire in 18ct yellow gold and I wouldn’t want anything bigger because it would get in the way and get caught on things. No idea how celebrities wear those giant rocks they have as engagement rings.

Diamond paved bands can be scratchy and irritating because they rub on the fingers next to it. Go for only a half band of paving and not a full band. Keep in mind that the diamonds can get dirty and cloudy pretty easily depending on your skin type, how often you wash your hands, if you apply moisturiser and things like that.

Honestly you’ll need to try on a range of rings to find the style that suits your hand. I would never have picked out the style I ended up choosing. The styles I did like looked like shit on my hands.

I’d disagree here, this is my grandmothers and it is 1 carat, I wear it in my right hand, and so half this size would be very dainty indeed,

op. I agree with the poster who said watch how much setting there is, as it can overpower the stone and make it look even smaller.

Aquamarine and diamonds

That's stunning! I would say this is the daintiest of the lot on this thread tbh, some of these are definitely not what i would call dainty! Something like this with a smaller stone would be dainty imo. I think of my ring as chunky and it's smaller than some on here 😁

I seem to have friends with lots of dainty but non-boring rings. Coloured stones, mixed cuts/shapes, mixed metals. Memorable and personal! :)

It also depends on the dimensions if you're considering how big it looks on the finger. You could have a fairly large carat weight but that weight might be all in the depth so it looks smaller. This is my ring - I spent an age choosing the dimensions as I wanted it to look a certain size but without paying for a diamond where all the weight was in the depth. At the same time you have to have a certain depth to make sure the light refracts in a certain way. In any case, this is only 0.7 ct but looks bigger because of the dimensions I chose.

Thank you Barbs!! I do love it, it’s from a jewellery shop with a second hand section so it is vintage. I find vintage rings suit me better as I have tiny hands and fingers.

This is mine. It’s an art deco diamond cluster from the 1920s and we bought it from an antique shop via eBay. It’s almost 11 years since we got engaged and I still love it as much now as I did when we bought it (DH originally proposed with his late mum’s eternity ring and we went shopping together later for my ring, I still wear his mum’s ring on my right hand though).

That is such a pretty ring.

bobkelso · 21/02/2026 17:54

Still love mine - simple platinum band and princess cut solitaire, also just a plain platinum wedding band.

Swollen pregnancy fingers in this pic they aren't usually so tight!
0.25ct brilliant cut solitaire, 2mm platinum wedding band and matching half eternity.
I got a larger ring with coloured stones for our 10th anniversary which I wear on my right hand.

went shopping today, ended up in Ernest jones, this ring is my favourite that I tried on, what do you guys think?

its 18k white gold, 0.25ct diamond, 0.4ct weight altogether, very good clarity of diamond, it was sooo sparkly. My fiancé suggested I size up with the diamond but I love the 0.25 size

If avoid the high street jewellers. Go to Hatton Garden or Birmingham Jewellery quarter and shop around. You'll get a good price there. Now you know what you like you can literally go into shop after shop at somewhere like Hatton Garden and get exactly what you want for a much better price.

Mimicking · 22/02/2026 22:07

Just a thought. I really wanted a trilogy diamond ring, but when I tried one on, it didn't look right. I ended up with a solitaire diamond (which I was dead against) but it suited my hand so much better.

Try on a few different styles to see which style looks right on your hand.

Also FWIW, my diamond (I think 3/4 carat) had a slight flaw in it, but people always commented on how sparkly it was. It was claw set and round brilliant cut so the light caught it really well.

KaleQueen · 22/02/2026 22:09

whatever diamond you opt for, go for a platinum band. White gold needs replating frequently and can scratch more easily. Platinum is hardy and will retain its colour

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 22/02/2026 22:12

Mune is from Ernst alone, I love it but honestly avoid them as they were bloody awful with issues that arose afterwards.

we ordered ours online from here 14 years ago, still looking amazing - after looking in shops and trying on to see what suited. You can pretty much build your own ring. The cost was about £1k less that high street for a trilogy of emerald cut diamonds on platinum.
